Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Blade 2, The Shape of Water) finally started working on his long-gestating Netflix adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein earlier this year, and had reportedly already started to put an all-star cast together when the Hollywood strikes hit.

Netflix declined to comment at the time, but the fan-favorite filmmaker has now confirmed (via FearHQ.com) that the project is indeed moving forward with Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, and Mia Goth in the lead role, and another A-lister has also been added to the ensemble.

During the 10th-anniversary screening of Pacific Rim (via Collider) over the weekend, del Toro announced that Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Alita: Battle Angel) was on board. though he didn't mention which part he'll be playing.

“I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it. It’s Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and we’re working on it.”

Waltz previously worked with del Toro on his recent stop-motion animated adaptation of Pinocchio, providing the voice of the villainous Count Volupe.

It's assumed that Isaac and Garfield will play the eponymous doctor and his Monster (though we have no idea which actor would portray which character), while Goth is believed to be playing Victor Frankenstein's love-interest, Elizabeth.

Del Toro will write and direct the film.

First published in 1818, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus has been adapted numerous times for the stage and screen, but there have been very few fully faithful takes on the story (the creature's appearance in the novel, for example, has never been accurately depicted).

With Del Toro behind the camera, it's probably safe to assume that this will stick as closely as possible to the book.

Just in case you're somehow unaware of the premise of the novel, you'll find a brief synopsis below.

"A young scientist, Victor Frankenstein, driven by vanity and thirst for knowledge, manages to give life to a creature whom he assembled from dead material. The creature turns out very ugly, and Victor abandons him in horror. Rejected by his creator and hated by mankind in general, the Monster devotes himself to destruction and revenge."

Willing to be that Garfield is The Monster, Isaac is the Doctor, and Waltz is Igor. Mia could be the Bride? Hopefully.

@VicSage - Garfield as The Monster........, id say make him Doctor Frankenstein and make Isaac the monster.

Thats if Igor is in the movie, he isn't in the book or the original film (the hunch back in the original was named Carl. Ygor wasn't until Son Of Frankenstein). Ignor is also probably owned by universal

@VicSage - Waltz will be De Lacy I think. It’s based on Wrightson’s Frankenstein art which is a direct translation of the book - so no Ygor, Igor (it’s Eye-Gor!) or Fritz

@dracula - completely missed that this was an adaptation of the original novel. I always assumed Del Toro would do a more Universal take on Frankenstein. Damn.

@VicSage - I think it’s more likely she’s playing Elizabeth then the Bride.

@dracula - I assume Garfield will play the Doctor. However him playing a more thin Frankensteins Monster would be interesting and I know he can pull it off. It would make him look a little more ghoolish and unnerving with Garfields think and tall physique.

Movie of the year! Whenever it comes out. I'm still holding out for his "At The Mountains of Madness" movie

Universal [frick]ed up when they didnt commit to her terms to produce the dark universe

He made a good movie about woman on fish love, (basically his Creature From The Black Lagoon)

now is doing Frankenstein and it will for sure be better than Tom Cruise running from a Mummy and then getting super powers

@dracula - I kind of hope Jolie’s Bride still happens. Seeing Bardem in the Karloff makeup would have been something else

@tmp3 - Sucks what happened, the cast they had rounded up was so good.

Why they threw in ego maniac Tom Curise, who is a great action star but does not exactly fit the same mold as the rest, I will never know. Worst of all they killed The Mummy, who had a pretty cool design, to give normal looking Tom Cruise super powers.

makes me think they were going to turn it into a tom cruise monster hunter franchise

@dracula - it sucks because mummy’s kind of always been ASS outside of the original Karloff & first Fraser one. Frankenstein’s had multiple great movies, Dracula is iconic, so outside of them owning the property idk why they decided to start with that

@dracula - Universal keeps shitting the bed with him.
They should have given him the budget for Hellboy 3, this ultimately soured the relationship.
I think his choice to not take reigns over Universal Monsters at least had to do with that.

dracula - 10/11/2023, 2:36 AM
@Blergh - I can understand on hellboy. Both great films, but pretty sure both qualify as bombs. the first film wasn't even universal

Hellboy cost 66 mill and made less than 100 mill, the sequel happened because it did great on home video, thats why they were able to get the sequel made at universal, they thought even if it failed, they would make it up on physical release.

Hellboy 2 cost 85 mill and made around 160 mill, but by then netflix had launched and it didn't do as well on physical

Wish we got Hellboy 3, but it would have cost even more, can see why he had a hard time making it.

Cant believe they managed to find someone to take the newest reboot after the last reboot failed.

@dracula - I get the decision but it still soured the relationship with Guillermo.
There was a long article back in the day about him fighting to get it made and ultimately failing.

Obviously it’s a two-way lane. Del Toro tends to jump off of projects once too much pushback rears it’s head. So that might also flow into that

Shelley’s classic is my favorite work of fiction ever. Unfathomably excited for this. Isaac as Wrightson’s Victor is genius casting given it looks just like him. Feels like it could be his defining role? [frick]ing pumped

I thought it was already confirmed that Garfield was the Monster and Isaac was playing Dr Frankenstein but I guess not…

Anyway , looking forward to it regardless!!.

Wonder who Christopher Waltz is playing…

I could see it being Frankensteins father or one of his professors.

Del Toro is a bit hit or miss, but if this hits then it is gonna hit haaard. Dude’s style n mind is made for a Frankenstein retelling. With that stacked cast this has all the ingredients for something really special

Isaac could play a pretty traditional looking monster, he has the physique and chops, that’s unless DelToro seeks to surprise us.
Garfield fits the classic Doctor look, he could surely go through as a classic English scientist.

As for Waltz, I would assume he might be Fritz or maybe the village elder that just happened to show up at the beginning and end of almost every movie.

Not sure what the book adaption entails, never read the book but saw all the movies (pretty much, I’m aware there are some lost features)
