Apologetic Superhero Movies

Here I mention a few movies which served as apologies to the movies that came before them.

For many years, the world has recieved many great movies but we have also been cursed by downright awful movies too. Many times, studios have had to clear their names whenever they fall short when adapting comic book characters to the big screen. While there are many films I could mention, I have chosen the ones which I think deserve to be written down.

1)Daredevil: Director's Cut (Apology for Daredevil: The theatrical cut)

Let's face it, the Daredevil which was released in the cinemas was complete crap. So many things felt wrong. I later found out that there was a director's cut and the news was that it was a thousand times better. And guess what. It was amazing. Trust me when I say that the director's cut ranks right up there with spider-man 2. And I am not going over the top when I say that. I really mean it.
There were always a few aspects of Daredevil's character that I found unique such as his occupation as a lawyer and most importantly, his faith (He's catholic). Sure, he doesn't spit out bible verses while fighting thugs but it is obviously a big part of his life. In the original cut, these aspects were hardly touched on. All we got was one scene in court and one scene where Matt makes a confession. While in the director's cut, we get numerous scenes of both. We actually get to see Matt use his abilities to solve cases which makes the movie less than a typical superhero movie and more like an interesting episode of CSI. His faith is also shown to the viewer a higher level. But those who haven't watched the director's cut shouldn't worry since it never gets "preachy" but it does add a few more layers to Daredevil's character. There is a nice scene where Matt sits in the church by himself but he can still hear everything around him. It really shows how Matt suffers to find any sense of peace. I feel very bad for Ben Affleck because he actually does an impressive job at portraying the Man without Fear but the original cut of the film didn't show that. It's tragic really. Whenever the word 'Daredevil' comes up, people think of the butchered movie which was originally given to us. I strongly recommend that you watch the director's cut. You haven't watched Daredevil until you've watched the director's cut. This time, when Daredevil jumps into darkness at the end of the movie, it means something.

2)Batman Begins (Apology for Batman and Robin)

Batman and Robin is a dark topic to most comic book fans in general. I'm not going to talk much about this because I don't want any nightmares but I'll give you the gist. Bat nipples, bat credit card and a villan who only says stupid puns. They also ruined the character of Bane and made him a dumb henchman (The horror). Its a painful movie to watch in my opinion. Its even worse if you're a batman fan.
I still love Tim Burton's Batman films with a passion, and I found Batman Forever somewhat entertaining (when I was a kid) but Batman and Robin is a crime against mankind. At the end of the day, Nolan came and saved the Batman with his trilogy. End of story.

3)The Incredible Hulk (Apology for Ang Lee's Hulk)

I want to make it clear that I don't hate Ang Lee's Hulk movie. I hate certain things in this movie such as the giant poodle and the look of the hulk. My main problem is the fact that Ang Lee didn't make a Hulk Movie. He made a movie which had the Hulk in it. He never felt like a real character. He just felt like a special effect.
Six years later, the reboot was released which was much closer to the comics. This time, Bruce Banner was played by Edward Norton, one of the most talented actors of his generation. He did a terrific job in my opinion. If there was one thing I wished this movie had, it would be Jennifer Connelly. I didn't hate Liv Taylor (especially after watching the deleted scenes) but I think it would have been great to see Edward and Jennifer together on the screen together.
There were many pluses in this film like the way hulk yells hsis famous catchphrase, 'Hulk smash!!!'
This time around, the hulk resembled Bruce Banner much more than he did in Ang Lee's movie.
Case in point

The final fight between the Hulk and the Abomination was gritty, intense and brutal. It was everything I wanted to see in a hulk movie. I remember my girlfriend worrying about the hulk and Betty's safety during the fight and she rarely cares for superhero movies!
Its nice to know that the Edward Norton vs Marvel controversy has been cleared up by the Incredible Hulk director. In case you didn't know, Edward Norton wasn't being a pain in the ass as reported but just wanted the attempted suicide scene to be included.

There it is. The movies which were made to revive characters who were once dead. Quick nod to x-men:First class. Man of steel will most likely be an apology film.

Cool ideas. Superman Returns was supposed to be an apology for Superman 3&4, but it came out as a slap to the face of the fans, who had already been burned twice before. (3 times if you count the Supergirl movie.)

Cool picks.

Three of my favorite movies.

I don't think Daredevil the theatrical wasnt bad, just average.

Later this year, IF everything goes well. Wolverine will be the apology for that god awful origins movie, Thor 2 will be the apology for the crap Thor movie, and MOS will be the apology for the last 3 super-fails....

TASM was supposed to be the apology for SM3, turns it it was just as bad and as good as it.

@Fenix122, while I don't think DD theatrical cut wasn't as bad as most make it out to be, it becomes awful once you compare it to the director's cut.

Apologetic*

The studios aren't worried about their image. They have their own department that handles that. What they are concerned/interested in above all things is profit, which is kind of obvious and expected - it is an industry.

Daredevil led to Elektra, which has effectively scared studios shitless of producing a CBM centering around a heroine. Director's Cut is good, but that's not Fox apologizing - it's just restoring the footage that was left in the cutting room floor.

Ang Lee's Hulk was [incredible]. The Incredible Hulk felt like a footnote, a pit-stop on the way from Iron Man to the Dark Knight. I legitimately forgot about it until I saw the trailer during Iron Man. I suppose this MIGHT be a bit of an apologist, if you look at the direction it went. You have a movie that effectively follows the mindset of the 70s tv series and subsequent Bixby movies, but has the comic book Hulk in the transformation. It was something of a promise in the trailers to audiences who had expected something like the tv series, but got Wuxia instead in 2003. It was a marketing ploy.

Batman Begins, in my opinion, was the best of the Batman movies. It grossed the least amount of the Nolan trilogy because audiences weren't expecting what they got BECAUSE of Batman and Robin, as well as the overall expectations that came with the genre. Was it an apology? No way. It was a vision.

@Tainted87, as I said before, I don't hate Ang Lee's movie. I've grown fond of it over the years. I think Ang Lee's Hulk would have done better had it been released 2018 or so if the world wanted something new. I think it was a bad idea to stray away from the source material when introducing the character to the big screen.

@Tainted87, when I say "Apology", I mean movies which erased the memory of the previous film.

"Daredevil: The Director's Cut" was better, not great.

You forgot to mention "Captain America: The First Avenger" is an apology for "Captain America" with Matt Salinger and his rubber ears.

Add to the list we await:
"Justice League of America" The bald guy from "MASH" was Martian Manhunter
"30 Days of Night"
"Howard the Duck"
"Battleship" (Not a CBM, but, man, we need an apology)

Good or bad, Punisher Warzone and Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance were both intended to be apologies, and much more hardcore than their predecessors.

I have to disagree about Daredevil on two points. The directors cut is largely the same film, with imo, material that deserved to be left out (the Coolio Case. Really?) Sure there's extra flouishes with the Catholicism or the father, or the loneliness, but all of that came across well in the theatrical version, too. It was totally conveyed. Of course this is coming from someone who loved Daredevil anyway, both versions. But I'm just saying, peoples problems with the film are still there (bad cg, some casting). This is no Kingdom of Heaven. No Troy. No BladeRumner. The cut can't fix those.

@RobGrizzly, the reason why I feel the director's cut is better is because it showed Matt and froggy at work in the courtroom. The way they tried to get sympathy from the jury by intentionally missing Matt's chair. I also loved the way Matt hallucinated about the woman who died.
