"Coraline" Director Hints At More Neil Gaimen Adaptations On The Horizon

Neil Gaiman fans rejoice: Coraline director Henry Selick has told totalfilm.com to expect more Gaiman adaptations from him in the future.

With "Coraline" getting rave reviews all over the place, it was a safe bet that the studios would be clammering for more adaptations of Neil Gaimens work. Total Film interviewed Henry Selick about that very subject..

“We’re actually talking about it definitely,” he told them when they asked him what he'd like to do next. “We want to work together again, but I’d rather not say right now because there are so many - several - titles under discussion.”

Im not sure i want to see Gaimens more adult stuff in animated form! So hopefully Selick wont be sticking to that medium. Gaimen has already stated that there is going to be a movie of "Death: The High Cost Of Living" at some point..could this be one of those titles? "Sandman" is by far his most popular title but its doubtful that will be tackled next...but we can always hope!

Despite not being familiar with Gaiman’s novels before working on Coraline, the man behind Nightmare Before Christmas also said he’d found a kindred spirit in the author.

“It was a nice surprise and I felt like he was a brother you know, like my original friendship with Tim Burton.

“He felt like someone from the same planet as me, maybe different neighbourhood - he wears more black than me - but it was a nice script”.

Selick was close-lipped when pressed for more details, but he did speak a little about what Gaiman is currently working on.

“I’m always interested in the next thing he’s going to write. At the moment, he’s on a particular project which takes him to China.

“So I can’t give out any titles but it was a great collaboration, really an artistically enhancing experience.”

Please be Sandman..and not made from plastacene!

I like what he said about Gaiman at the end there. I would love to see them all as an animated feature, 2d of course, but they are so able for live action im sure thats the way it will go. Hell, id like to see American Gods movie too.

ANYTHING from Gaiman is gold!
I cannot honestly think of a single one of his works that wouldn't be beautiful to see on screen. My wife was not much of a reader (true story), and then I introduced her to Stardust as an intro to his work. Now, granted, not one of his more "cerebral" works, but as a soft intro, it was perfect! She then went on to voraciously read almost all of his work, starting of course with Sandman. Then she went on to Good Omens, Death: The High Cost of Living, American Gods, Anansi Boys, The Graveyard Book, and various short stories and other works.

Look, to put it as bluntly as possible, if anyone could get my wife to start reading, and ENJOY it, AND continue to want to read more, he deserves a God damned medal!!

lol, he is a damn genius alright. The only novels of his i have read are Neverwhere(class) and Anansi Boys(pretty good)..What are American Gods and Graveyard Book like? His comics are the best i have ever read, its a shame he very rarely writes these days. The last thing he did was a 2 part Batman story about his funeral..it was very like Sandman:The Wake

Ror: American Gods is a lot like Sandman, in that it's richly and deeply rooted in folklore (a common trend in Gaiman's works), and it involves a character named Shadow who travels around the world collecting ancient dieties who's powers are waning due to lack of interest, and their power struggle over newer "gods", linked to modern technology and pop culture. It's a wonderful story, and an OBVIOUS must read if you like his Sandman work!
Graveyard Book is a story about a boy named Nobody who is raised by ghosts in a graveyard after his family is brutally murdered by a character named Jack. It is often compared allegorally to "The Jungle Book."
Both are beautiful stories, as only Gaiman could write. Both are must reads!
Incidentally, are the only stories that you read of his "Neverwhere" and "Anansi Boys", or did you mean JUST novels, cause if you haven't read any of his graphic novels... Oh boy! lol
(*Anansi Boys is actually a companion/follow-up to American Gods, as the characters originate in American Gods.)

Darthstern, the 2nd one is out now, its an issue of Detective Comics. Its a bit of a let down actually!

Ror: Yeah, "Mr Nancy" (or Anansi) is introduced in American Gods, "Anansi Boys" is about his children. ;-)

BTW, anyone heard any news on Gaiman's (and Guillermo Del Toro's, for that matter) involvement in the "Doctor Strange" movie lately?

Last I heard, Gaiman was still working on the screenplay, Del Toro wanted to direct, but wasn't necessarily "attached", and Patrick Dempsey was in the run for the lead.

LEEE777--you're cooky/weird! You have such a perfect avatar for you.

Ror-- I'd like to see the opposite. I think sandman would be great as a cartoon because of all the dreamscapes and abstract environments, the artists could really go nuts without worrying about the look of reality vs dream time. Although they have gotten better at mixing live action with 3d environments.

Since we are discussing it elsewhere. This was a main problem spawn had. When film went into its hell sequences it was like ok its video game time!

Death (the high cost of living-the only one ive read) was mostly in regular reality so i could see that in live action, easily.

BETTY @ Thanx i think! Heh heh heh. : D

RORSCH @ DEATHS gotta be LIVE not animated!!! (with RICCI ; ) ) I dunno, most animated movies don't do too well at the Box office unless its Disney or Pixer! I think big film studios know this. An anyhow, DC can just do their animated direct to dvd movies if they wanna do DEATH or SANDMAN for that matter, after all GL animated movie looks the Bomb!!!

Anyone know where to get NEVERWHERE?? I think it was a BBC production? : /

Betty your right, Death would be much easier to do live action, and Sandman would prob suit animation more too..but i just really want to see actors bring life to those characters.
