Gore Verbinski has been extremely busy promoting his new movie 'Rango', starring Johnny Depp.
However, that hasn't stopped him for giving us some brand new information on his planned film adaption of the Lone Ranger. To most people Johnny Depp has been a fan favorite for the film adaption and Verbinski has offered us some insight on the direction he'll be going with the character of Tonto, as well as what stage the film is currently in.

“It’s just at the primordial stage. We’re working on the screenplay, but if we can pull that off — find that story I want to tell — then it will be worth doing.”

Gore then went on to compare Depp's role as Tonto and the story of Don Quixote saying that Sancho Panza is the new inspiration for the new Tonto:

“The only version of The Lone Ranger I’m interested in doing is Don Quixote told from Sancho Panza’s point of view. And hence I was honest early on with Johnny that Tonto is the part. We’re not going to do it [straight], everyone knows that story. I don’t want to tell that story… I want the version from the untrustworthy narrator who might be a little crazy — but somehow the question is, is he crazy or is the world crazy? That, I find fascinating.”

Hero Complex mentioned the Verbinski the Far Side comic (pictured below) that poked fun at the duo of the Lone Ranger and Tonto, and Verbinski said he liked the sound of it:

“Well, that’s kind of the world we want to be in. It’s an odd couple, the two of them together. Getting that tone right is going to be a blast.”

God, I love the Far Side! Great stuff!!!!! Oh, and I was a huge fan of the Lone Ranger when I was a kid, read the books, watched the old black n white series and actually really enjoyed the Clinton Spilsbury version that came out in the 80's. So, I'm anticipating this version, altho, wasn't thrilled to hear that Johnny Depp was up for the role of Tonto. I read somewhere that Depp has some Cherokee in him. Don't most Americans have SOME Native American blood in them? I, for one, am part Cherokee, but it's like 1/8th. So, my question is, why didn't they go with a real Native American actor? I'm sure there are plenty of them out there. Never really understood that logic. Like in Remo Williams, Joel Grey played Chiun. Make-up magic turned him into an old Korean guy. Why not just get a Korean actor?

<<< but somehow the question is, is he crazy or is the world crazy?>>>

um. what??

it's a cowboy adventure story. with healthy doses of friendship between two men who, by the standards of the day, shouldn't be partners.

why complicate that?? ugh, i'm still very not sold on a project I'd love to see done well. Alas.

There's a 1940-ish movie called Hi-Yo, Silver!

It's, to date, the best interpretation of The Lone Ranger I've seen -- including the recent Dynamite comics (which conceptually were neat, but the storytelling was terribly sloppy both artistically and in the actual writing) and the doomed WB pilot from about 5 years ago which was actually fun.

In it, the identity of The Lone Ranger is a secret to everyone (including the audience) save for one man: Tonto.

Seriously, how much more awesome can you get?
