Q: What is the DROPPER Motion Comic?
Rick Karo: It’s a prequel production that introduces the origin story to the DROPPER feature film that we are currently developing. Your audience will meet one of the film’s central characters, Gavin Fitch and get a glimpse into the evolution of a killer.
Q: What is the DROPPER feature film about?
Rick Karo: In the tone of “SEVEN”, we like to say that DROPPER will do to elevator riding in Manhattan, what “JAWS” did to swimming in the ocean…..
Q: How did this project originate?
Rick Karo: The idea for DROPPER was pitched to me by filmmakers Stephanie Austin, Drew Bracken, Scott Thaler and Joe Tomczak. Based on an original idea from Scott, the screenplay is being written by Joe. These guys have worked on such films as TERMINATOR 2, TRUE LIES, BEHIND ENEMY LINES, SAHARA, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and BATTLE LA. We decided to produce the DROPPER Motion Comic in the same photo-realistic style we utilized on the Motion Comic prequel to the MAX PAYNE movie we created.
Q: Who created the art/look for the piece and who wrote the prequel story?
Rick Karo: A terrific young artist, Steven Perkins created the art, Leif Einarsson did all the pre-viz work and well-known comic book writers and creators Raven Gregory and Christian Beranek wrote the script. We approached this production as if it were a theatrical film as we wanted to create a Motion Comic with scope to really set up the mood and tone for the DROPPER film.
Q: Why create and produce a Motion Comic?
Rick Karo: We really believe that Motion Comics are the wave of the future for the comic book industry as a whole, and certainly within the independent space. We have the unique ability, through SPLASTK, to generate enormous audience scale through this new and emerging creative form. In the past year alone, our various Motion Comic productions have received million of views.
Q: Do viewers have to pay to see them?
Rick Karo: No, it’s all free to the user/viewer as we have an advertising sponsorship model that enables us to provide the content for no charge to our SPLASTK audience. One of the most exciting elements to our business is that we are generating revenue and massive exposure for our creators while developing new content, in the comic book/graphic novel form, that is the basis for our feature film, television and gaming pursuits.
Q: So in essence, you’re reverse engineering the Feature Film, Television and Gaming development process while making money?
Rick Karo: I couldn’t have said it better myself!
