James Cameron Wanted Spider-Man!

James Cameron Wanted Spider-Man!

No! There are no other superheroes James wants to direct!

So quit asking him. That seems to be his attitude anyway. If someone asked me the same question time in and time out I guess I would get a little irritated as well. What can you do? This from MTV:

"I've sort of made it pretty clear that Spider-Man was the guy I liked when I was a kid and I wasn't too interested in the others," Cameron told MTV News when asked if he has been approached with any other super hero properties to direct.

"I feel there are too many superhero movies right now," Cameron reasoned. "I think Hollywood's in a bit of a rut. They've done the good ones and they're starting to get down to the second and third tier of superheroes — the guys that would not be asked to speak at the annual superhero dinner."

Sorry James but there can never be too many superhero movies out there. There can be to many bad superhero movies but saying there are just plain too many is like saying you can have to much fun or eating a cookie with out sugar in it. Just cant happen!

Is it me or is James starting to look like Doc from 'Back to the Future'?

Well thats the First time I've heard about Cameron doing any Superhero Film.

I kinda wish that he got the job.

He probably would've casted everyone right.

Imagine...A Spiderman movie WITHOUT Dunsts...

Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it...LOL!

The Green Goblin was really one of the few people in the series that was Truely casted close enough to the actualy Spiderman characters.

"I feel there are too many superhero movies right now"

I disagree.Superhero/Comic Book movies have become a genre unto themselves. That's just like saying there's too many dramas out right now.Or there's too many comedies out right now.

"I think Hollywood's in a bit of a rut. They've done the good ones and they're starting to get down to the second and third tier of superheroes — the guys that would not be asked to speak at the annual superhero dinner."

I disagree again.I would say there are more top tier characters that need movies than ones that don't have them.

I recall reading two separate scripts he'd written.I didn't really like them. One had Liz Allan as the love interest. No Gwen or MJ.The other had a sex scene between Peter and MJ on a bridge. No thank you.

I like Cameron, but here's the problem with him and people like him.He seems to think because he doesn't know or like a character, he isn't important. He said he only cared about Spider-Man, so he's probably not a comic book fan. It's like when Iron Man came out, they were saying how he was a second string or unknown character. But that's just because the average person didn't know him.Within the Marvel Universe, I'd say that Tony Stark is one of the 4 most prominent figures.Nick Fury is involved in all superhero affairs, Reed Richards is the smartest man on Eart, Steve Rogers is the greatest hero on Earth and Tony Stark is the richest man on Earth. They said the same thing about Thor.I even heard it abot Green Lantern.

I think to the average person, if you're not Batman, Superman, Spider-Man or Wolverine, you don't matter.

what a tool. "Too many CBM's"

I seriously dislike and/or disagree with every word of this tripe. And he's an asshole.

Just because Cap, Thor, and Green Lantern aren't HIS personal faves doesn't mean they don't count or they are second tier or whatever.

As a matter of fact I think that in some ways they are just now getting around to the good stuff.

And he is an ASSHOLE for that super hero dinner crack.

Oh yeah sure Black Panther or Captan America wouldn't just be asked to speak at the dinner. The damn thing would be in their honor!!

Cameron's an asshole and is just saying "[frick] you" to all the comic book fans who shat on his baby, Avatar.

"I feel there are too many superhero movies right now. I think Hollywood's in a bit of a rut. They've done the good ones and they're starting to get down to the second and third tier of superheroes — the guys that would not be asked to speak at the annual superhero dinner."

Oh and you're sorry ass movie which was made from every concept under the sun that you over-hyped to high heavens is soooooo original that it will take hollywood out of it's rut??? Second and Third tier heroes are the bottom of the barel but a mish mash of countless aspects of previous books and films isn't??? As if Hollywood isn't already full of low grade sci-fi/fantasy films like Eragon, D&D, In The Name of The King and Pathfinder to name a few. And you think your overused plot shouldn't be concidered tier three shit??? That's your cue to go back to your retirement, douche.

Too many superhero movies? We had Watchmen & Wolverine. Thats it not counting animation (and I don't). Wow, 2! That is just absurd.

Well, I've read about his ideas for a Spider-Man movie and they were dreadful (even involving Spider-Man joining a "master race of mutants") so I'm glad he never got anywhere near the character!!

The fact is, the movies that have already been made like Daredeveil, Elektra and Blade are actually the second and third tier of superheroes in comparison to the likes of Thor, Iron Man and Captain America which just goes to show the guy clearly knows bugger all about what he's saying!!

If I had to guess I'd say he sees CBM's below him after making a "masterpiece" like Avatar which in all honestly looks pretty average from what I've seen so far!

I wish somebody that actually read spider-man comic books would of got the job because the first 2 were alright and the third was just garbage hate to see what 4 looks like..... my favorite comic book hero with a ugly mary jane and they brought Gwen Stacy at the wrong time she was suppose to be the one to get thrown from the bridge and die not Mary Jane.....

This is old news, thank GOD his Spidey film didn't get made...he changed all of the character's names, like if I recall Sandman became Boyd?? Seriously...he should stick to the Call me Joe Rip-off....

*applauds* @ Josh. thank you...

As a matter of fact before the movie came out there was a whole lot of Marvel readers that didn't even know who the heck Blade was. Now Blade is huge.

Basically every time I hear someone do this "they are scraping the bottom of the barrel now" BS, I just automatically know I am dealing with someone who a) doesn't have any idea what they are talking about b) Is very young and only knows about comic book characters from Fox Kids or Cartoon Network, or c) is a snerky, snooty film/art snob dildo that looks down on the whole genre as being purile kiddy shit.

No there can never be to many, I must have more, my needs are not yet satified....

Anyway couldn't you just imagine Cameron doing Spidey.
He would cast Arnold as a bad as killer Osbourn and Sigourney Weaver as a hip Aunt May, with him self probably playing Uncle Ben, LOL :P
But I would definitely watch it, if he ever got to reboot it or direct a sequel.

S&%T HE COULDN'T HAVE DONE ANY WORSE??? SAM RAIMI IS MORE OF A TOOL THAN JAMES CAMERON... IF CAMERON DIRECTED SPIDERMAN HE WOULD HAVE PUT HIS OWN S&%T DIRECTOR VISION INTO THE MOVIE, AS SO MANY DIRECTORS DO TODAY, AND HE WOULD HAVE SCREWED UP THE MOVIE, BUT IT STILL WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ANY WORSE THAN THOSE PILE OF CRAP MOVIES SAM RAIMI DIRECTED...

thanks dudes.

I just don't see how attitudes like this still prevail in this fantastic new age of Watchmen and TDK and Iron Man.
Those were quality films, and proof positive that this genre has a lot to offer the world

@ Shaman: of course.. how could I have been so negligent? LOL ;)

for real though.. every single hollywood bubble dweller that looks down their rhinoplastied nose at us is just out of my cool book. Maybe even permanently

@JonathanisMagnum: i do not remember him saying hollywood is rushing them out. he basically took a $hit on the CBM genre. if you agree w/ him at all, you yourself may not be taking a $hit on CBMs; but you sir are definitely condoning them getting $hit upon. And that my friend... is a bunch of $HIT!!!

Cameron's comment about the "second and third tier" makes me think that he might only be motivated by the financial success of a movie. Some of the lesser-known comic characters may make great movies, but would the general public go see them if they didn't already know who they were going in?
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 12/15/2009, 11:42 AM
Husker, good point I guess. The fact that they are lesser known could make a difference.

But have no doubt, sir. Cap and Thor will BOTH make bank. Good bank.

There will be cartoons and hype and intense word of mouth. It'll happen

Shaman
Shaman - 12/15/2009, 12:03 PM
Husker- That's exactly what he's doing. He's pissing and moaning because he feels that the only "valuable" heroes have already been made. He's only after "sure things" and that doesn't surprise me in the least when we look at his plot for Avatar. "Oh let's just use the story that has been used a million times and incorporate tech from other movies and creatures that look like others that have been already created yet slightly different so not to provoke law suits". I mean, come on...

How dare James Cameron for having an opinion. He didn't really say anything too negative about the genre, he said "Hollywood is making too much superhero movies", and in all actuality, they probably are.

Sure, it's awesome that CBMs are getting solid budgets and creative talent behind them, but how will the film industry look 10 years from now? There are always trends in genres in Hollywood, and if CBMs are treated the same way as past genre trends, they will stop getting made, just as other types of movies have in the past.

Movies like Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider, Watchmen (yeah I went there bitches), The Spirit, and Wolverine are starting to leave a bad taste in Hollywoods mouth, and if something like the Avengers flops, the genre is gonna instantly lose it's standing in Hollywood.

If they take the time to do movies with the same care and patience as TDK and Iron Man, this won't be a problem. But if you look at stuff like Mutant Chronicles and Push (which aren't based on comics, but have fallen into that genre), you can see that they're getting to the point where they are cranking these out, and if they overdo it, CBMs will be in the same boat as horror movies nowadays. Every once in a while there's a gem, but for the most part you gotta sift through shit to find em.

I think Cameron is just being cautious about the genre, that and he's probably butthurt he didn't get to do spidey (which may have been terrible. the treatment was pretty shitty)

Update on TheMYTH from his friend Chris AKA Humbled:

“Apparently they have found a slow working balance between the 2 and now all 3 major tumors are about 20% smaller than they were when he came in…. On top of that, he was able to have a few hours of real consciousness yesterday morning. He spent it with his new son who he'd not met until then. I sat in the corner of the room the whole time just watching the most resilient person to ever face their own mortality. Even though any who could see him could tell he was in considerable pain, his humor and wit were still intact. Doctors say if no more complications come along, he might be able to be home about Christmas time and continue his treatment through outpatient. Apparently this type of cancer is typically treated this way…. When this first started a little over a month ago he had less than 2% survival chance, now it's a 1-in-4. I'm sure Myth would have something to say about the power of the collective consciousness of humanity after reading this article and being able to see just how many people are rooting for him.”

He includes a poem from theMyth’s own writings.

He also mentions The Myth’s stories and fan fics and Myth’s family:

” I told Amanda (MYTH’s wife) about this article and she viewed it. She said she was at a loss for words and couldn't see to type a comment. She said that this was something phenomenal and it would leave even 'Myth' at a loss for words. I'm sure she'll be back soon to give thanks. “

Keep posting guys for MYTH and his family, they need all the strength and encouragement and well wishes and love they can get now. The MYTH is still alive and fighting, so cheer the man on!

Without reading all those comments, what about The Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman and were just now finally getting Green Lantern. Those superhero characters will have a film hopefully someday, and those heroes are huge in the comic book world. If they weren't they wouldn't have lasted so long and they certainly wouldn't have had their own comic book. Jim just wants to do his own type of movies, using his own imagination and ideas, without sticking to a origin story of a superhero. Would have been interesting to have seen a James Cameron Spider-man movie, but I guess it was never meant to be, which probably left a sour taste in his mouth when they told him he couldn't direct it, even after the rights issue was resolved.
