POLL: Real Life Masked Crusaders - Asset Or Nuisance?

POLL: Real Life Masked Crusaders - Asset Or Nuisance?

The recent arrest of real life masked vigilante Benjamin Fodor popularly known as Phoenix Jones brings up the issue of Masked vigilantes and if there is a place for them in our society today.

Phoenix Jones, a 23 year old member of the Rain City Superhero movement was recently arrested after an altercation in front of a night club in Seattle. Phoenix claims he was trying to break up a fight with the use of a pepper spray but the people who were involved in the altercation claimed there was no fight going on. His recent arrest and unmasking has brought to the forefront the issue of masked vigilantes. While this might seem like something straight out of Kick-Ass, are these individuals part of the solution or part of the problem? Prior to his arrest that same night, Jones had come to the aid of Fabio Heuring, a nightclub goer who unwittingly found himself in the middle of a fight with another club patron.

Phoenix is just one in a loong line of real people who don these costumes and decide to patrol their cities all in a bid to fight crime and protect their community. While their "courage" is to be admired (or not)every situation can not be rectified with the use of pepper spray. What would happen if one of these masked heroes suddenly found themselves in a situation where there are fire arms present? This could pose a threat to the vigilantes themselves and to innocent bystanders. With the proper training and knowledge, could these vigilantes be an asset to local law enforcement or do they need to stand down and leave the policing to law enforcement? Sound off below.

By the way, check out HBO's documentary titled "Superheroes" if you haven't.

It is admirable but at the end of the day, i think they will do more harm than good.

Protect yourself and your family at all costs. Beyond that, call the cops if you see a crime being committed. They are the ones being payed to "protect and serve".

The trouble is with these 'superheroes' is that apart from the obvious law-breaking, well... I saw law breaking; the law means they are pretty much handicapped to do nothing more than observe and report and citizens arrest in the worst emergency (but even then liable to be sued). But I was going to say the trouble with the vast majority of these 'superheroes' is that by far, they are more in love with the idea of superheroism rather than its application. What do i mean by that?; - well, I mean how many of these heroes (as brave/naive as they are [delete as appropriate])- how many of them have actually REALLY dedicated themselves to the idea of fighting crime?.
I have watched two of these documentaries and am aware of the global registra of heroes, but practically none of them are folowing superhero 101 and actually dedicating themselves to a martial art and taking this as seriously as they claim. NEVER reveal your identity - NEVER reveal you have wife and kids (seriously: w.t.f)- NEVER reveal your mancave/batcave. Pretty much all of them are IN-LOVE WITH THE IDEA, but NOT PREPARED TO PUT IN THE EFFORT - SERIOUS effort to do it properly if you could imagine Batman Begins on a budget actually happening in the real world.
If it did ever happen do you think a Batman would seek out or agree to a documentary?, how do you think they would actually ever fare against a gun-wielding criminal? - yeah... thats what i thought. Do you think Batman would give a &^%$ about the law with regards to him being just an onlooker and calling the police?.
If a pro-acrobat/martial artist had a dual identity and motive for actually doing this I would give them better odds especially if they took it seriously and disapeered into the night to avoid publicity. As for these hobbie heroes on these documentaries with plenty of idealism and not much else, I fear it will end tragically sooner rather than later.

Effective Vigilante - trained fighters/weapon specialist/detectives taking out criminals that cops wont touch cause they don't want to blow a potential big case by not having the proper evidence (I"m talking about all the murdering drug cartel members cops know about but can't touch until they publicly screw up.)

Idiots Vigilantes - in-shape fanboys who acquired body armor and walk the streets in front of cameras.

Our tax dollars pay cops to take pot away from kids like me. I admire policemen, but the system they area part of is as corrupt as the crime they are passively trying to deconstruct. I want someone out there who isn't afraid to kick the shit out of bad people. If these heroes are giving their identity to the cops like Phoenix Jones did, they aren't doing us any favors.

these guys have the right idea butthe wrong execution.

if they were trained in combat and firearms then im sure tey could be more of a help

were im from cops dont see and do everything

if there was a guy in a superhero suit patroling places cops dont go everynight and could hand situation i would welcome it.

but most of you would call them dumb and just let crime be cus you are scared lil people .
JackBauer
JackBauer - 10/18/2011, 9:53 AM
@Greengo - It would depend on the circumstances. I'm the primary bread winner in my family so I have to think about my safety 1st, but if you got jumped by some thug and he didn't have any weapons I would help you out.

If there are multiple assailants and/or if they have weapons you're on your own ;)

JackBauer - 10/18/2011, 9:56 AM
@thewolfx - Yeah, the cops don't always show up when you need them, but they sure as hell come out of hiding when you have an expired tag or make an illegal turn. Damn somebitches! ;)

I agree with what a combined AlcoholicA & SimyJo have said. If they have dedicated themselves to training of body, mind and are cautious, then great! Go for it! If the steps have not been taken then they need to just not do it, unless they are the ones who walk around with food for the homeless and do charities and what not.

Phoenix Jones did nothing wrong in that Vid, they were clearly fighting and he tried to break it up. The personality of the female showed just how persistent, stupid and drunk she was. She was definitely someone who deserved to be Pepper Sprayed. The fact that a group of 5 to 10 men then attacked him for her shows how stupid her group is and how influential she is as well. Again any and all of them deserve to have been Sprayed. At the end of the day Phoenix, did right thing. The video is 16 mins long and is damn near through before any cops come. Because of there negligence, Phoenix could have been shot and things could of escalated. While Phoenix didn't help the situation, he did break up the fight and changed the general assault on himself. Which is a noble risk.

Personality and circumstance tells me that the people that attacked him started the fight, there were more of them and they were simply ignorant. Jones may have saved someones ass.

Greengo - 10/18/2011, 9:58 AM
They just need to get a concealed carry permit.

All they do normally is observe and report anyways, unless someone is getting beat up.
Greengo
Greengo - 10/18/2011, 10:02 AM
lmao Thx Jack...

Well I've broken up fights and it's rare when someone who is just trying to break it up gets attacked. The person giving the beat-down normally realizes that the person is just trying to break it up and not picking sides.

I would say this is the dumbest thing in the world if there weren't neighborhoods that are so gang infested the police dare not go. Guys like who are able to properly protect themselves and their identities can be very useful. However, it is very dangerous and I do not recommend it.

We wouldnt regulate a good Samaritan who helped injured people, or broke up fights in the street, or helped raise money for good causes but as soon as they cover their faces or wear brightly coloured clothes they become a menace?... doesnt that seem strange

@Selina: why?

What a stupid question. I know you're be sarcastic but come one.

I'm just presenting different point of view. And you should have included that video of Phoenix Jones in your article since that is what brought this issue up to begin with. He was obviously breaking up a fight.

That HBO spot was pretty funny. They all seem to be pretty dorky. Lmao @ that guy beating up a door : )
