The Simon & Kirby Superheroes from Titan Books was designed for the true comic book aficionado. It's seven-pound heft and big, bold dimensions serve as an overt physical testament to the monumental importance of the four-color creations contained within. Legendary comic book creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby helped to build the American comic book industry as we know it by creating some of the most enduring and memorable heroic characters, including the patriotic super-soldier Captain America, who they created together in 1941.

While many of the characters they created for Timely/Marvel and DC Comics are still in print today, many more of their most dynamic creations have been out of print for decades and all but forgotten. Titan has collected those lost stories, restored the artwork and reprinted them in four fabulous colors on massive 7 1/2" x 11" pages in The Simon & Kirby Superheroes.

Included in the reprinted collection of stories featuring Fighting American, The Black Owl, Suntman, Captain 3-D, The Fly, The Vagabond Prince, and Private Strong are some extremely rare alternate covers and three never-before-seen stories: "Stuntman Crowns a Jungle Lord", "Trapped on Wax" and "The Mad Thinker".

The largest drawback to this collection is the price. At $49.95, the price tag hits as hard as the Fighting American's punches. But, if you are one of those true comic book aficionados mentioned above, then you realize that that price is a mere pittance compared to what you would have to pay to purchase original copies of even a portion of the works contained within (and I'm sure that some of you have tried), not to mention the fact that it contains three stories by two of the kings of comics, Joe Simon & Jack Kirby, that you can't see anywhere else.

Rating: 3 / 5

The Simon and Kirby Superheroes

By Joe Simon & Jack Kirby
Introduction by Neil Gaiman

Synopsis

Beginning with Blue Bolt in June, 1940, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby set the standard for costumed heroes. Their creation Captain America, remains one of the most famous heroes in comic book history, and their work for Timely and DC Comics raised the bar.

This volume introduces some of their most exciting characters: Fighting American, their cold-war take on the patriotic hero, The Fly, with origins in an unknown Spider-Man prototype, Lancelot Strong, the man with the double life, and the Hollywood swashbuckler known as Stuntman.

This is the only edition authorized by both Joe Simon and the estate of Jack Kirby, gathered from the official Simon and Kirby archives.

It appears that Simon & Kirby's influence is still being felt in today's modern Marvel Comics universe! Check out the similiarities between Steve Rogers' new costume and the classic Fighting American costume...

That is a worthy format for those two great creators, and I think it's cool to showcase some of their lesser-known characters.
