Frank Beddor ("There's Something About Mary") talked to the L.A. Times about the plot of his upcoming movie "Monopoly", based on the famous board game by Hasbro and expected to be directed by Ridley Scott following his latest movie, "Prometheus".

“I created a comedic, lovable loser who lives in Manhattan and works at a real estate company and he’s not very good at his job but he’s great at playing Monopoly. And the world record for playing is 70 straight days – over 1,600 hours – and he wanted to try to convince his friends to help him break that world record. They think he is crazy. They kid him about this girl and they’re playing the game and there’s this big fight. And he’s holding a Chance card and after they’ve left he says, ‘Damn, I wanted to use that Chance card,’ and he throws it down. He falls asleep and then he wakes up in the morning and he’s holding the Chance card, and he thinks, ‘That’s odd.’” - Explained Baddor.

“He’s all groggy" - He continues - "and he goes down to buy some coffee and he reaches into his pocket and all he has is Monopoly money. All this Monopoly money pours out. He’s confused and embarrassed and the girl reaches across the counter and says, ‘That’s OK.’ And she gives him change in Monopoly money. He walks outside and he’s in this very vibrant place, Monopoly City, and he’s just come out of a Chance Shop. As it goes on, he takes on the evil Parker Brothers in the game of Monolopy. He has to defeat them. It tries to incorporate all the iconic imageries — a sports car pulls up, there’s someone on a horse, someone pushing a wheelbarrow — and rich Uncle Pennybags, you’re going to see him as the maître d’ at the restaurant and he’s the buggy driver and the local eccentric and the doorman at the opera. There’s all these sight gags.”

Movies based on games are becoming more and more popular. What are your opinions about this?

I liked it as a real-world concept about some dumb schlub. Once it enters Monopoly world it sounds like a snoozer.

Now, if Monopoly world was somehow popping up in OUR world, that could be fun.

Either way, as long as it's played for laughs, with tongue firmly in top hat, it could be fun.

However, I'll skip the very likely McDonald's tie-in contest.

Wow this sounds so terrible I'd expect Alan Smithee to direct it, not Ridley Scott.

Lol to Aven and Intruder. The movie shouldn't pass go or collect 200 pounds. On the other hand as a UK citizen, I grew up playin this with my family when I was a kid, so with Ridley Scott's talent behind it, it has a strange kind of potential. Maybe could get Danny McBride or Seth Rogen?

lmfao @teabag.

This description took a turn for the worse when he just happens to wake up in the world of Monopoly. And in the end it'll turn out to be just a dream. How creative. I could've came up with that idea when I was eleven. Big whoop. For some reason I saw Bradley Cooper when I read this.

I hope it's not geared towards children. If it's funny (with adult humor) I might watch it for shits and giggles.

If this is a version of Monopoly then the Human Centipede is a version of Connect Four. Imaginary Article. It sounds like it would be a commercial for a dude on Viagra.

.... wait, so this is really happening? I thought a Monopoly movie was just one of the many bad ideas for adaptations that Hasbro was throwing around over drinks and sushi. O.o

I dunno, it COULD work as one of those quirky, screwball films that doesn't take it self seriously and if it skips over the 'real world' tie-ups these kind of movies tend to have and just have it take place in a pure Monopoly world.

But I say trash this and do Candyland or Jem and the Holograms. Transformers is reaching it's climax so they need another movie franchise to boost toy sales. The aforementioned two have the most potential.
