Superboy: Writer Scott Lobdell Previews What Fans Can Expect - Plus Video Tribute

With DC's big "52 Reboot" coming in September, one of the character some of the fans are wondering about is Conner Kent's Superboy - a character who has guest starred and Smallville and is featured prominently in Cartoon Network's Young Justice. Writer Scott Lobdell details what can be expected.

According to the writer, Superboy will be adjusted, but not entirely rebooted. "I don't really see his origin story as that complicated: He was created by Project Cadmus from the cells of Lex Luthor and Superman in the event anything ever happened to Superman. None of that has changed," says Lobdell. "He's a work in progress, where the pre-September Superboy was more firmly established. Even when he was first introduced he was pretty much fully defined. The exciting part about this Superboy is we see him honing his T.K. [tactile telekinesis] powers in a way we've never seen before."

Being a work in progress causes one to wonder if there will be more of a connection between this Superboy and the one that appears on Young Justice, who was more or less raised in a giant test tube and is trying to adjust to the world once he's freed by Robin, Aqualad and Kid Flash.

Have they started broadcasting the rest of the Young Justice episodes? Im all for a semi reboot as long as Superboy is more like YJ Conner than High School musical guy...

Definitely Weak Sauce. Young Justice does entertain me but in no way is it better than the books were.

When is the Cartoon Network going to get around to showing new episodes of Young Justice and the last few new episodes of Brave and the Bold?

Shaman: I agree: the series is well done, and I've been enjoying it, but nothing beats the original series, especially the early issues. That was a fun title.

Itbegins: The early stories with this Superboy were a lot of fun. He acted like a typical teenage boy- out for a good time and obsessed with any attractive girl that he saw. That was part of what made the original Young Justice series so fun. You had Superboy, who could be serious, but was easily distracted if he saw some hotties in bikinis, Robin, who was like a little Batman, completely serious, and Impulse, whose powers made him useful to have around but so completely hyper that he drove the other two nuts.

comicb00kguy- TOTALLY!!! Superboy SHOULD be the teen hunk/womanizer he always was and Impluse is where it was at!!! Kid Flash just doesn't give off the same vibe IMO, even though he should, being the same character and all. I just never liked him "becomming" Kid Flash and loosing his Implusive self. I also had much affection towards Lil' Lobo "The Top Teen" and i completely stopped reading the books when they turned him into a pussy.

What in the hell is wrong with the people who decided Superboy should start wearing a black t-shirt? They took a really cool design like the one with the leather jacket and made him stupid unfun and brooding all the time! he acts like batman.............They need to go back to making him cool again and not some generic rip off with a black shirt and a pair of jean!

DC is expecting people that have never read a comic book in their lives to up and go to comic book stores and start loading up just because they renumbered their books. That is flat out idiotic, people are not going to discover some new love for comic books because it has a big fat #1 in the corner.

Most people that have never read a comic book will never read a comic book. If DC really wanted a reboot, they should have started by firing, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, and Dan Didio. That would have been an awesome reboot of DC Comics.

@arrionshadow

Superboy’s leather jacket look was shit. Stupid haircut, John Lennon Glasses, Biker Jacket? Little thin belts it looks like he stole from someone’s little sister.

He looks much better in the T Shirt

@ar8898

AT one point in your life, you had never picked up a comic book.

Comic Book sales are shrinking. The fan base is growing smaller, and older.

If they just keep the readers they have now at the current rate of decay……THAT ISNT GOOD ENOUGH.

So [frick] you if you cant handle change for the survival of the medium.

@LordHuck: Actually, [frick] you, you asshole. People have every right to be pissed off and certainly have the right to express their feeling on the issue publicly the same as you have. You are in the minority in thinking this is going to be a successful venture. Plenty of us think Dan didio and jim lee and whoever else are destroying DC. No one knows for sure what's going to happen.

@LordHuck Good job at showing what an asshole you are.

You are right, at one point in my life I had never picked up a comic book. When I did start reading it was because of the characters and stories, not numbers in the top left corner.

So [frick] you douchebag!

@ar8898 Why in the [frick] would they fire Geoff Johns when he made Green Lantern and Green Lantern related books the top selling books of the last few years beating out all other DC and Marvel titles on a more consistent bases?

Don't know about the t-shirt and jeans look, but any new suit for Superman/Superboy is a good idea if you ask me. He is desperately in need of a new look. Does Superboy now have the "S" tattooed on his shoulder? How did they explain that?

@davidcub

Wow your avatar is Linda Carter and Chris Reeve …….you clearly are stuck way in the past and cant handle change. Comics have evolved beyond that campy crapola… what you value is clearly just an old tarnished relic best forgotten and left to rot.

DC isn’t interested in the status quo. They aren’t interested in keeping the fans they already have and that have been steadily losing by staying so “traditional”. We, you, they, are not enough anymore. They need new fans. They need teens, and people in their 20’s to pick up comics for the 1st time. And to do that they don’t need characters bogged down with 50 years of bullshit history and old shitty costumes. Bold change is what is needed to bring in new readership and a new golden age

@ar8898 But that’s just it dumbass. Kids aren’t picking up comics anymore, not like they used to. They are getting fewer and fewer new readers each year, recruiting less and less of each new generation.

New readers don’t want to see characters dressed like Allen Scott who looked like they got dressed out of their aunt’s costume trunk in the attic. Or a superman in his 30’s who is married and some lame boy scout. That shit wont fly anymore.

They want stories and characters that are relevant to today and to them. Not comics printed to appease the ever aging continuity and traditionalist freaks.

Say what you want, but you are on the losing side. They are booting the old tired shit to the side of the road and not looking back.DC will not be beholden to or bogged down by appeasing the old guard.
Get on board or [frick] off.
superpooper
superpooper - 7/6/2011, 11:34 PM
@lordhuck I absolutely agree with you. DC desperately needs to do something to generate new interest in their books. But to me, the biggest problem both publishers have as far as new readers is price. A full blown comic book jones can easily cost someone upwards of $400 a month, which is way out of any childs price range. I'd even venture to say most people under 25 would have a hard time keeping up with that kind of a habit. Furthermore, with all the crossovers and multi-title events that occur so frequently, it's almost impossible for someone to follow the entire story without buying almost every title in the roster. If they want to increase sales they should find a way to drop the price.
