You know there would be much for us as CBM fans to enjoy at the theater if it wasn't for the great performances that made these movies great. If it wasn't for these actors we would still be watching straight-to-dvd movies for just an ounce of talent. This article is an expression of appreciation to those who made this movies memorable and left the genre better than they found it.

Of course Heath Ledger was outstanding as the Joker. His performance knocked down walls by winning an Oscar and numerous other awards. Also, Ledger brought in more fans to the genre Some who never watched Batman Begins, did so because of him. This is always good for CBM fans. He changed things.....forever. I believe he made a hugely positive impact on, not only the genre but, future films to come.

Another great performance was in Iron Man with Robert Downey Jr. When I heard about him getting the part, I was shocked. I had no faith in him and thought the worst. But a friend of mine convinced me that RDJ's past was just like Tony Stark. So I watched it when it came out and was blown away. I have to admit, I never really liked Iron Man until seeing this movie.

Mickey Rourke In Sin City was Marv. This movie is, with out a doubt, my favorite CBM of all time. I love when movies based on books, not only do the book justice but, blow the book out of the water.

Rorschach was the most important character in the Watchmen. Jackie Earle Haley sold me. I really was impressed and thought that he was perfectly cast.

There hasn't been a movie that I have been more excited about than X-Men. I loved the comics and the cartoon. When I watched Hugh Jackman as Wolverine I knew I didn't over-hype myself. Then when the second one came out and I saw him kill a dude I came out of my skin. Truly one of the best experiences of my life in a theater.

Sure there are many more. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, Michael Fassbender, Hugo Weaving, Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, etc. The thing is, that many actors have had the opportunity to have an impact on comic book movies and have come up short. But who is going to make the movies that come out this year memorable?

It sure will be an awesome year for CBMs. I think Karl Urban is going to knock Dredd out of the park. Also, I think this movie will surprise everybody. Also, I have a feeling that Tom Hardy is capable of a great performance as Bane. He has great range as an actor and this movie will prove that. And Andrew Garfield is going to bring fans back to Spider-Man. I like the way it looks so far and I think it will be Amazing. And next year I think Costner is going to be excellent as Jonathan Kent.

Thanks to all those great actors that have made comic book movies worth watching again and again.

@intruder: Snipes owned in the Blade movies. If it wasn't for him, I don't think cbm's would be as successful as they are today.

@backup: RDJ did something I never thought possible in these films, he made Ironman interesting.

Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. I love some of the actresses who played her on the TV show (Eartha Kitt, Julie Newmar), but Pfeiffer is by leagues my favorite.

And I literally can't imagine anyone but RDJ playing Iron Man. I fear for the inevitable reboot attempt..

Say whaaaaaaat? You prefer Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to Gary Oldman's Commissioner Gordon? Really?
I love Hugh as Wolverine, but Gary Oldman's portrayal of Jim Gordon is literally one of the best CBM castings ever.

Maybe I'm the Old Man of the discussion, but I think a little perspective is needed.
AAMPAS (y'know, the Academy Awards people) have a blatant disrespect for CBMs starting with snubbing Christopher Reeve's amazing portrayal in Superman. (Although, to appease fans they created a "Best Visual Effects" category to throw the 2nd largest grossing movie of 1978 an Oscar bone.)
The only thing Hollywood understands is money. And, it may be argued, people say Tim Burton's Batman opened the floodgates in 1989, but it was a peripheral character from the Tomb of Dracula that broke wide the possibilities of CBMs. Yes, 1998's Blade with Wesley "Tax Felony" Snipes. It crossed several genres (action/horror/sci-fi/CB/ethnic), showed movie studios that CBMs could be made without an astronomical budget, and allowed the green light for Spider-Man and X-Men which lead us down the primrose path to Batman Begins.
Let's face it: Heath Ledger was already a rising star in the industry and somewhat of a Hollywood "It Boy". Although a spectacular performance, Ledger would have never won the Best Supporting Oscar if not for his death. He was being rewarded for a career that should have been and not for the unnerving performance as the clown prince of crime. That's how Hollywood morns the loss of future box office revenue.
So, let us give credit where credit is due. Without the breakout performance of Mr. Reeve (AND his villainous counterpart played by the great Gene Hackman) then there would be no SNIKT!, no "Hulk Smash!", no nipples on the bat suit and definitely no flourishing genre of films which we currently bask in our collective geekdom.
