The Oscar's Best Moment Goes To... The Dictator

The Oscar's Best Moment Goes To... The Dictator

Most of us were probably watching THE WALKING DEAD last night, and let's face it, the Oscars is a joke--just pretentious Hollywood patting itself on the back. So, what was the stand out moment of the night? Sacha Baron Cohen (as the Dictator) spilling the ashes of Kim Jong il on Ryan Seacrest.

I love Sacha Baron Cohen, cant wait to see him play Freddie Mercury.

On a side note, the Oscars are a complete joke. How does John Williams get 2 nominations in the same category and still lose?

Subpar list of winners this year. I'm still pissed off about how brilliant movies like Drive, Warrior and Rise Of The Planet Of the Apes were shunned from the big awards, yet movies like The Artist (black and white, silent picture...seriously?) and Hugo sweep. Ah well.
Rango deserved its Oscar though.

Ok, I dis like The Artist, it was a nice, well acted, feel good flick. But did it deserve so many accolades? Not in my opinion. Especially when Gary Oldman and Nick Nolte up! But I guess when you look at its competition..there was none.

Only upset for me was Emmanuel Lubezki not getting best cinematography for Tree of Life.

Oh well there is always "Gravity" with Cuaron next year.

@PaulRom

I get what you mean, I went into it after masses of hype just hoping it would be decent, not expecting it to live up to what has been said (apart from the obvious backlash by some detractors) but it actually felt very fresh and original which is weird considering there is nothing new about it at all.

Charming is probably the best way of putting it.

Tainted87 - 2/27/2012, 9:16 AM
Now if someone asks YOU what you are wearing, you will say Kim Jong Il!

That was [frick]ing great!

I hate the Oscars. The most over-rated, pretentious Hollywood bullshit assembled. They target movies that likely have a limited release (so we likely don't have a clue about some of them), that have some political subtext, some historical significance, and it's just ridiculous.

Never mind the Red Carpet.....

forthesakeofnow - 2/27/2012, 9:16 AM
@BlazinTexan

Its the problem with the whole "its his/her time" rule in the awards world, in the end if you are nominated loads of times like scorsese but are always the bridesmaid and never the bride then they can choose like with the departed to give it to you eventually.

But Gary's lack of a win i think just goes along with the fact that the academy just really dont like his performances as a rule.

Interestingly Gary Oldman's George Smiley being the least Gary Oldman, Gary Oldman as been. lol

@PaulRom have you ever even seen The Artist, because in my opinion it's one of the best films ever made, and that seems to be an opinion shared by 99% of the people who've seen it. But yes, Drive should've definitely had more recognition, as should Apes (never seen Warrior though, so I can't comment on it).

The most ridiculous thing was Iron Lady winning best Makeup, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo not even being nominated, I mean, Rooney Mara was completely transformed for that role, and she even had all those piercings done for the role. Even Harry Potter was much more worthy of that award than Iron Lady.

Mr Eko, I agree ..kinda, they were both very good flicks, but I don't think they were masterpieces. That word is flung around too much in Hollywood when a bunch of critics and film snobs rally behind a movie for various reasons, few of which actually have much to do with the actual quality of film making on display. Hugo in particular was a disappointing for me..as I said, still thought it was an enjoyable, very good movie, but the reviews suggested a game changer. Nope just a well made kid's movie that most kids would actually be bored with! I honestly believe if that hadn't been directed by Scorsese it would not have received so many plaudits.

@tainted87

i dont agree with all the academies decisions but for the most part those pretentious politicaly subtextual historically significant films are usually the best made.

If more mainstream films want to step up in terms of quality to the levels of Inception then the stuff the general public go see might get nominated more often.

Or they/you could stick to the MTV movie awards.
AC1
AC1 - 2/27/2012, 9:21 AM
@PaulRom ignore the bit about me asking if you've seen it, your second post didn't show when I was typing it.
Tainted87
Tainted87 - 2/27/2012, 9:22 AM
Note also how they don't cherry pick a number of actors from different films as the "best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress" for their nominations.

Look at "the Help". I am completely uninterested in this movie. This movie holds nominations (and one win) for best actress and supporting actress, because the Academy is obviously partial to it. Same with "the Artist".

It really is all about favoritism.
Explain to me how "The Iron Lady" wins the "Best Makeup" award in place of Harry Potter.

@monkeyballs3

lol that avengers quote is great. you look at the trailer compared to the TDKR and even TASM ones and you can see how a TV director and digital "make the most out of the pixels" camera ratios can make the work of an incredible D.P. like Seamus look a bit pants.
AC1
AC1 - 2/27/2012, 9:23 AM
Gary Oldman better win a supporting actor oscar for Jim Gordon next year, even if he's only in the film for 5 minutes. It's about time he got one of those.
Niuhll
Niuhll - 2/27/2012, 9:24 AM
Really disappointing night, Hugo was a great film, but i still think Harry Potter deserved a technical award, at least one. Drive should have been up for several awards.

And i think its [frick]ing hilarious how Extremely Loud was nominated for best picture, weak film, that nobody at my local cinema came to see, seriously, like 8 people in 12 showings.

@Tainted87

Again its easy to write off a film that you are uninterested in. the help as a whole was a bit naff in my mind but i cant fault any of the performances, it just so happens that often the films that are very performative and actor driven are often full of great performances.

You compare it to the tree of life where the acting is very loose and its much more of a directors/cinematographers film and you can see why brad pitt and jessica chastaine where nominanted for their other more show off ish roles.

Somebody up top mentioned 'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' and 'Drive'...two of the bet movies I saw in the last year/in a long time.

Some of the pretentious voting is ridiculous. A silent movie "oh my god it's so original"? Absolutely shocking. This show was well and truly missed by me.

Kudos to Seafrest for not freakin out though. Can't wait for 'The Dictator'.

Give me a break with Inception, please. I thought it'd be great, I had a seizure the morning I was going to take my friends to see it. I was wiped. I still drove up over there to see it, and I managed to stay awake the entire time, although it really wasn't easy. I thought this was because I was drained for the day with my brain restarting and all. Not so, because I rented it and it affected me the same way.

By the way, I don't watch TV, and am for the most part, completely uninterested in the music of our time. Don't throw me in with that crowd just because you think I'm not sophisticated enough for the Oscars.
Niuhll
Niuhll - 2/27/2012, 9:27 AM
@Tainted87 The way it was described to me was that its harder to do real than fantasy, who knows what a Goblin really looks like? So you can play with it a little, Thatcher existed and, they made Streep look an awful lot like her!
forthesakeofnow
forthesakeofnow - 2/27/2012, 9:29 AM

Extremely loud was the pure oscar-bait this year, the academy love tom hanks and have found a new darling in sandra bullock, plus they seem to be a fan of daldry as well.
JatevinM
JatevinM - 2/27/2012, 9:29 AM
I'm pissed that Rise of the Planet of the Apes wasn't even nominated, The awards that Harry Potter were nominated for and deserved they didn't win, that Alan Rickman didn't get a best supporting actor nomination, and that Viola Davis didn't win the Best Actress award that she deserved.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 2/27/2012, 9:30 AM
I don't like the Oscars.

not saying that some of the movies didn't deserved it,but for the most part it's just an award to pretentiousness.

movies like "Extremely Loud" should be left out just for the fact that is blatant Oscar bait.
JatevinM
JatevinM - 2/27/2012, 9:31 AM
I also forgot to mention that I seriously think Sacha Baron Cohen should not be invited back to the Oscars for a couple of years because that stunt he pulled was inappropriate for the Oscars. It was not the time or the place for that and he should have recognized it. Ryan Seacrest is not the person you want to piss off in Hollywood.

@Tainted87

Thanks for your history with inception, i meant it as an example of a both critical and commercial success rather than wanting you point of view on the film, which has nothing to do with mainstream opinion.

and its nice to hear you dont watch TV or listen to music of our time, i dont either to be honest, i was just assuming you might have been into that sort of thing based on me knowing little to nothing about you in the same way you make judgements on films u havent seen and arent interested in.

it has nothing to do with someone being sophisticated enough for anything.
