UPDATED: Solomon Kane Screening!

UPDATED: Solomon Kane Screening!

The reviews for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" are in, and they don't look good. But if it wasn't for that movie being so disappointing, I wouldn't know the greatest movie news I've seen in the last six months!

Head over to Ain't It Cool News HERE, and then come back... It's OK, I'll wait.

...

Back yet? No?

...

Back yet? OK.

DID YOU FREAKING SEE THAT?!

Yeah, yeah, yeah... Wolverine is "awful," oh so disappointing, but WHO FREAKING CARES! (Sorry, I'm passionate.)

"After a lengthy TalkBack exchange, I'll go ahead and check out WOLVERINE after a screening of SOLOMON KANE today, Friday"

Oh Robert Howard fans rejoice!

For those that don't know, Solomon Kane is one of the main characters for several short stories and poems by Conan (as in, the barbarian) creator, Robert E. Howard.

Kane is a somber puritan swordsman, that often ends up (reluctantly) dealing with dark and supernatural antagonists such as pirates, witch doctors and sorcerers. He is described as a very tall, dark man and usually comes off as sad or burdened. Many of the original Howard stories take place in Africa, where Kane befriends a shaman named N'Longa, who ends up assisting Kane on multiple occasions. More often than not, as engaging as the plot of a story will be, you will be more enthralled with Kane's internal struggle of being a man of God, while also having to be so violent to survive.

Solomon Kane was also the subject of a series of comics by Marvel in the '70s and '80s (see, it is a comic book movie). And most recently Dark Horse has printed a series of Solomon Kane comics and have announced a collected reprint of the original Marvel run.

As far as the movie goes, Joblo.com says, "James Purefoy has been cast as puritan [sic] swordsman Solomon Kane in a movie of the same name to be made from the stories of 'Conan the Barbarian' creator Robert E. Howard. Kane is a 16th century soldier who learns that his brutal and cruel actions have damned him but is determined to redeem himself by living peaceably. But he finds himself dragged out of retirement for a fight against evil."

Sounds like a winner to me!

I had heard late last year that a Solomon Kane movie was in the making, but never realized it was so close to release. The original article I had read estimated a 2010 opening, maybe.

UPDATE: This statement just came across on Ain't It Cool News - "I like Hugh Jackman. I want him to be the best Wolverine he can be, although - with the double feature I saw - there's a part of me that would prefer to see James Purefoy take over the character, because everything that I would love to see Wolverine be, I saw in Solomon Kane today, only more religious."

Why is Solomon Kane not getting more press?!

Yeah, I wouldn't give much credit to those reviews either. Most are just normal folk reviews, which are fine, but my opinion often differs from. But R. Ebert had some negative things to say, and I find his and my tastes coincide, so I'm not sure.

But Come On! Solomon F'n Kane!
:D

Edit: There we go, I edited the article so it doesn't use as harsh of language against ole' Wolvie. I was just super jacked when I first saw the news my fingers began typing immediately. :)

I was at that distributor's screening of Solomon Kane that Aint It Cool News had set up here in LA.
I'm baised because this was my kind of movie, but I will say that this was was of THE best sword and sorcery films I've seen to date and I've pretty much seen them all.
Played straight with no one-liners or sidekicks, Solomon Kane was dark, grim and brutal. And that is why I loved it.
Still my favorite movie of the year so far.
