WHAT'S NEXT AFTER BLADE BROKE BARRIERS?..........AFFIRMATIVE (SUPERHERO) ACTION!!

This article is not about race or creed, it's about superheroes that need the same treatment as any other being made into a movie. It’s been almost eight years since Blade: Trinity hit theaters, and Wesley Snipes is famously indisposed at the moment.

Marvel Studios first flipped the race card in 2003’s Daredevil, unfortunately under FOX Studios. Casting actor Michael Clarke Duncan as the crime-lord nemesis, the Kingpin. (Duncan’s Black; in the comic Kingpin’s white.) So will Tinseltown highlight comics’ darker spectrum anytime soon?

Two years later, sexpot Kerry Washington portrayed blind sculptress Alicia Masters, girlfriend of the ever-loving’ blue-eyed Thing, in Fantastic Four, unfortunately under FOX Studios.

FOX STUDIOS:

FANTASTIC FOUR - $154,696,080 Worldwide
FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER - $131,921,738 Worldwide
DAREDEVIL - $102,543,518 Worldwide

Then came Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in Iron Man / Thor / Captain America and upcoming Avengers 2012.Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk in 2008, Iron Man 2 in 2010, and Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011. An additional three planned films are in various stages of production as of October 2011: The Avengers is in post-production and Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are in development.

MARVEL STUDIOS:

IRON MAN - $585,174,222 Worldwide
THE INCREDIBLE HULK - $263,427,551 Worldwide
IRON MAN 2 - $622,056,974 Worldwide
THOR - $448,512,824 Worldwide
CAPTAIN AMERICA - $365,960,451 Worldwide

But the final straw for comic-book fan boys has been Black British actor Idris Elba playing the Norse god Heimdall in Thor. This time around, purists may have had a right to be uptight. What was the purpose of Thor creators tinting the Norse mythology of Scandinavia with Black Vikings?

Hollywood pigmenting is understandable given the historically lily-white world of comics, but things have changed substantially since the mid 60’s. Marvel and DC Comics were both as Caucasian as the cast of Mad Men until the African chief T’Challa - a.k.a. the Black Panther debuted in the summer of ’66. “In this business, they’re always trying to think of something new to come up with,” says Marvel emeritus Stan Lee, “and it occurred to me that there weren’t any Black heroes. I thought that would be new and it would be fun to do, so we did it.”

The Falcon succeeded the Black Panther in ’69 as comics’ next African-American superhero. Marvel also introduced both Luke Cage and the X-Men’s Storm before DC Comics finally birthed Black Lightning to the world in 1977. A multitude of browner superheroes have been saving the world ever since: Cyborg , Green Lantern, Spawn, Cloak, Vixen, Firestorm, War Machine, Deathlok…on and on.

Marvel has stated the Black Panther and Luke Cage are the front runners for soon to be made movies that are long overdue. Marvel Studios has been very successful as of late, they should not be worried and take that chance on a superhero of color.

Kingpin and Alicia Masters were admittedly a little strange but not enough of a problem to completely ruin things for me at least. Nick Fury is based on the ultimate version so that's fine. but Heimdall was just downright weird. logistically speaking, it just makes no sense.
Love Black Panther, and Luke Cage, but Falcon...nnot so much. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of him to see why he might be interesting, but as it is I just don't get the appeal.

Oh come on... update the costume in the Marvel Studios fashion to make it more practical, and make his wings into something more like Iron Man's collapsing suitcase armor...

I think that'd come off pretty well on screen.

I bet theyre gonna make Falcon a SHIELD agent like he is in the Ultimate universe.
But Marvel needs to go ahead and do a Black Panther movie already

Luke Cage would be [frick]ing awesome! And what about Jessica Alba playing Sue Storm, that was a racial change aswell. But I can't say nothing bad about Jessica Alba :D

Me personally, I like it when an original white character turns black, hispanic, asain etc. In fact, I think DC/Marvel should consider, atleast, turning their C to Z rated characters to/of minority origin-Characters that people dont really care for.

Check out my Fancast!

Michael Jai White and Idris Alba would both be good at playing virtually any role in the Marvel Universe, Black Panther,Luke Cage or Night Thrasher easily comes mind but they could do well as Terrax, Gladiator, Thanos, Nova or Quasar too!

this was an interesting article. first off, there isn't some harmonious reason for making characters on the big screen non-white like their comic counter parts. Its done to get black meat in the seats. Diversity brings out the diverse, and hollywood knows this. Is it sure fire way to get us black people out to see something not made by Tyler Perry, no, but it helps.

As far as who they've used, I've been all for. MCD as kingpin was dead on. Large, imposing, dangerous, MCD played that very very well. Laurence Fishburne as Perry could work, don't sleep on him, the man can act. Kerry Washington didn't work for me, but neither did either of the fantastic four movies (she's still fine as wine).

Sammy shouldn't be up there becuase he is reflective of his comic book character. Ultimate Nick Fury is black, and has been since he was introduced in Ult X-Men (yes, Ult X-Men in one of thier early sagas before The Ultimates came out).

Ildris Elba played a alien/magic guardian of an alien/magical planet that "inspired" the vikings and thier pantheon of gods. With that in mind, it works. Please, again, great pressence.

I'm not sure where i fall on changing characters for the sake of diversity. I fall more to the side of creating new characters that are diverse ala Static, Icon, Mister Terrific II, etc...

It's been along time since ive been to CBM, sorry about the long post. what up @bigshow

Pretty informative article and reflective of the shallow state of black actors/actresses in comic book movies.
I had no problem with a black Perry White or Alicia, or Elba playing Heimdall, I can't really see anyone doing a more stoic portrayal of the Norse bridge guardian.
I didn't like Duncan as Fisk. He didn't have the acting chops to pull off the fat man's icy, brutal, but composed demeanor. There just wasn't any depth there.
Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury was meh. I know that the Ultimate version was based on his likeness but the onscreen Fury was mediocre. I read someone say they just saw Jackson, not Fury...and I get that. I don't know why but I wasn't really floored by his role. Denzel would have been a bad ass Fury.
Halle Berry as Storm was a pitiful exercise in miscasting. I would have gone with Bassett.
Getting off track and off topic, sorry;I'm shocked at the ignorance, especially from so called comic fans, for the announcement of a rumored Black Panther movie. What's the problem here people? He's a Batman rip off? Really? If you know anything at all the likeness ends in not only their abilities, race, culture, motivations, and psychology but also their significance in the roles they've played in comic book history. But oh yeah, besides all that they're identical. Wow.
What's wrong guys...too many black superheroes on screen? Yeah,I mean there's Blade, Nick Fury, War Machine( a secondary character), Darwin (dead), Heimdall (a secondary character), and uhhh..Blankman?
When is Hollywood and the rest of you closet racists going to get your crap together? The lack of "color", ie Asian, Latino, and Black characters in comic book movies is insulting.
I heard they were going to "white wash" Akira live action movie!
Pathetic.
Do Black Panther and do it right and no...Jamie Foxx isn't the answer.
