I would like to start off by saying that spider-man is my favorite comic character, growing up it was like I had a brother who was like me, he made mistakes, shed tears and never had enough money. Some heroes would go into fights full of confidence, not Peter Parker, he was always doubting himself, assuming that he would lose every fight. Now director Marc Webb has the daunting task of adapting these stories.
The origin is obviously an important aspect of spider-man's history but do we really need to see it again. Everybody knows the origin, Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider-man and his uncle was killed because he failed to act, we really don't need to have 30-40 minutes of the film with Peter developing his abilities again but from the trailers it's looking that way with a few minor tweaks and the introduction of Peter's parents.
The character of Peter Parker needs to be done almost perfectly. The thing that always appealed to me about Peter Parker was the fact that he never lost his sense of humor, he would always make jokes and try not to take situations seriously, these attributes differ Peter from spider-man. Luckily footage screened at comic con has shown that Peter will be witty in the costume.
At first I was against the new costume. I thought that although they did well to make it look more modern it felt more like a prototype that Peter would wear in his TV/wrestling days. However over time I have got used to the idea and believe that there must be a reason why it is made this, something that was not apparent in the Raimi franchise. If you rewatch the first film he goes from Peter looking at a sketch of the costume to actually swinging around but this was probably done for pacing.
The villain is always a very important part in films. They can make a film better or worse(the dark knight springs to mind), Sam Raimi's spider-man 2 did have one of the best comicbook movie villains ever because he was the best type, a sympathetic one. Some could argue that Heath Ledger's Joker was better and that the joker wasn't even sympathetic (I believe that the performance did help the overall dark knight reception). But Doctor Octopus's character was very similar to Curt Connors, ie.they are both Peter's teachers and do not believe that they are doing wrong, this is probably why the lizard wasn't featured in spider-man 3,but both have vastly different stories that they can be featured in. There is much story potential for the lizard, they filmmakers can make a dark and brooding lizard who snatches people for his sick experiments only to have spider-man reverse the formula and change him back or make him simply want to change everyone into lizards by affecting the water supply only to have spider-man beat him by luring the lizard to a place with a cold temperature. The one thing they mustn't do is kill off Connors, in future sequels he could help spider-man like he does in the comics, killing comicbook villains is almost becoming a parody of itself.
Personally I'm excited to see how this film will turn out, getting all of these elements right requires alot of time and effort but the pay off could be spectacular but if done wrong, well we might get another spider-man 3 or,even worse, batman and robin.
