Zorro Comes to DVD

Zorro Comes to DVD

As part of its "Treasures" collection, Walt Disney Home Video has released both seasons of its 1957-59 television version of Zorro, starring Guy Williams (John Robinson of Lost in Space). What's truly surprising is how well this 50-year-old television series has aged.

While geared for a family audience, the show is remarkably good, with a frequent serialized storytelling, and, of course, Williams, who excels in the dual role of Zorro and the mild-mannered Don Diego. Released in two volumes, Zorro presents every episode of the series produced.

In the liner notes for volume one, film historian Leonard Maltin says of the show, "It was an immediate success, and it wasn't hard to see why. A gallant defender of the oppressed, Zorro is a very appealing figure. Walt Disney hired writer-director Norman Foster to develop the character and set the tone of the series, as he had so successfully with Davy Crockett just a few years earlier. Together they chose the perfect actor to play Zorro in this action-packed but lighthearted show: Guy Williams. Everything about the series reflected Disney's philosophy of family entertainment and his commitment to quality. An elaborate, permanent set was built on the Disney studios lot. Williams was surrounded by a colorful and talented supporting cast...All 39 episodes of Season One (and the subsequent one-hour episodes that aired on Walt Disney Presents) have been remastered for this DVD set.

"Zorro attracted a sizable audience of kids and parents every week on ABC," he continued in the liner notes for volume two. "But most fans agree that the main attraction was the dazzling smile and winning personality of its star, Guy Williams. He not only filled the dual role of Don Diego and his alter-ego to perfection, he also performed all of his own swordfights."

The set contains the 39 episodes of season two, as well as the final two one-hour adventures made for Walt Disney Presents, as well as a retrospective on Guy Williams himself.

I spent today watching the first eight episodes, and while it's definitely kid-friendly, it really is pretty damn good. And considering that all of the sword fights and everything else were done live on set, it's even more impressive -- no CG anywhere near this baby (or decade, for that matter). And Guy Williams is great.

Hey Teabag, I loved it as a kid, too. I even had a record album with songs and dialogue from the show that I treasured. But considering I caught the reruns of the show in the 1960s, I haven't even given it a thought in at least 40 years, so these DVDs have been a wonderful rediscovery for me. But unlike so many things you go back to that you loved as a kid that are disappointing as an adult, this one is still fun. Just a pleasant surprise.

I can't say I've seen this show but hope it's better than the Antonio Banderas ones. Don't like those.

I loved watching this show at my Granddad's house when I was a kid (so many memories)... But I never saw the 90's show. The mask of Zorro with Antonio Banderas wasn't bad, IMO. Anthony Hopkins was the s#!+. Never saw the second one.

Zorro the Gay Blade is one of the funniest movies of all time. Treat yourself and watch it.

One of the great Zorro movies was the one with Ricardo Montelban (spelling ?) and the late / great Oliver Reed as Zorro.
