AVATAR Director James Cameron On Why He Thinks Rewatching The Movie Will Get Trolls To "Shut The F*** Up"

Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron has once again come out fighting, saying that he believes the trolls who ridicule 2009's Avatar will soon have no other choice than to "shut the f*** up."

Thirteen years after it was released in theaters, Avatar has a solid 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes and is "Certified Fresh" on the review aggregator. In no way does that make it anything other than a movie that was extremely well-received by critics, but it can be easy to forget that.

Why? Well, while it's true that Avatar seemingly borrowed ideas from other famous stories (it's frequently dubbed a "rip-off" of movies like Pocahontas and Dances With Wolves), the narrative around it would make you think it was one of the all-time worst blockbusters. This is simply not the case, but Avatar is frequently ridiculed and by no means treated like a classic.

If nothing else, those jaw-dropping 3D effects deserve some respect, and it sounds like director James Cameron has had enough.

During a recent interview with Empire (via SFFGazette.com), the filmmaker hit back at those who don't feel there's any need to continue the story with this December's Avatar: The Way of Water. In fact, he seems sure that those who hate on the movie will be silenced once they revisit the remastered version in theaters this September.

"The trolls will have it that nobody gives a sh*t and they can't remember the characters' names or one damn thing that happened in the movie," Cameron explains. "Then they see the movie again and go, 'Oh, okay, excuse me, let me just shut the [frick] up right now.' So I'm not worried about that."

We can appreciate why Cameron is so protective of the Avatar franchise as it's a passion project he's put a huge amount of time into. The movie does appear to be one that people remember is actually pretty damn good when they sit down to rewatch it, and while the filmmaker isn't mincing his words here, we do see where he's coming from.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

To whet audiences' appetites, Disney/20th Century Studios will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23. As for Avatar: The Way of Water, that arrives in theaters worldwide on December 16.

OT: I just finished Stranger Things 4 and I think we have a perfect young Tony Stark.

I know Tony is dead in the MCU, and I hate in the movies they have to kill off characters when their contracts are up. I'd rather they recast so we can still have Iron Man and Captain America and Thor and Spider-Man in the world for big team up events.

Well maybe somewhere in the Multiverse a younger Tony is having his origin story a lot earlier in his life due to events of the Multiverse collapsing, and he is able to invent a way into our world to get help or something, and we have a new Tony Stark in the MCU.

@UGLYsonic - bringing in alternate universe variants is probably the best way to bring in old characters back into the fold.

I'm hoping that'll be the case with Black Panther too, but far down the road they can also use it to reintroduce Stark and co. No reboot needed.

@UGLYsonic - You know what... If you squint, he really does look like a young RDJ. Huh...

And that actor did a great job in S4

@UGLYsonic - Look he was great in stranger things, and I wouldn't mind seeing more of him in other projects, but does it have to be a new iron man? I mean, if we start bringing in younger versions of dead characters then the whole thing becoms boring af, with basically no stakes at all and no new characters.

@KWilly -

:spoilers for STRANGER THINGS 4:

THIS was the scene that really sold it for me. I was like HOLY SHIT it's a young RDJ 100%. Looks identical to me, like his son or something. His voice even has that young RDJ rasp from his teen to 20 something movies in the 80s.

And this guys one hell of an actor.

@roboticJohnson - I hear you, but it really all comes down to the writing. If the story is written well, it could be amazing. Could be. There are so many things to play with in the MCU. How would an older Peter react to seeing his mentor again? How would the world react to Tony being back? How would this young Tony handle the legacy our Tony left behind? Those are huge boots to fill. Would Rhodey like this Tony or feel obligated to look out for him? How did the trauma of losing/failing to save his home world affect this Tony? Would he be an Avenger? Riri never had a chance to meet our Tony, would meeting a new Tony who's still head strong and a lose canon shatter her dream image of who Iron Man was? Maybe this Tony is too broken inside and becomes a bad guy, maybe because of his brokenness inside feels he needs to take unnecessarily risks and becomes a raging alcoholic. Maybe he just keeps making mistakes and becomes a liability. Maybe this Tony and Miles Morales are the only ones to escape their Ultimate universe being destroyed.

There is just so many ways a creative writer could spin a Young Tony from the Multiverse arc.

roboticJohnson - 7/7/2022, 8:27 AM
@UGLYsonic - honestly, him being a bad guy for a movie is the only thing that would be interesting, everything else would just diminish the story of rdj's iron man imo. Sorry but they're already mass-producing content with the movies and tv series, with stuff that is debatable like the agatha harkness tv series, the last thing I want disney to have is the belief they can just use the multiverse to give us 7 different versions of the same character and just stop trying altogether. It's just not worth it if you ask me.

@roboticJohnson - with the quality of Disney products and the phase 4 lately, I don't blame you for being so skeptical. I just think this actor would do an incredible job with a great script as Tony. That's all. The only way I'd want this is if the story was fantastic. But I haven't seen anything from the MCU lately that would make be feel they wouldn't find a way to botch it. So maybe you are right.

roboticJohnson
roboticJohnson - 7/7/2022, 9:08 AM
@UGLYsonic - yeah, I mean, I agree with you, this actor as iron man and a good script would be great, it's just that, considering the pandora's box that bringing back such an important character in such a way would open, I don't think it would be worth it. But in the end who knows, maybe something like that will happen regardless of what I think, in which case yes, I hope they cast him.

Cameron's always been kind of egotistical, but has given us great films that often push the evelope. I just hope we're not observing a down turn now with his ego being the cause of his down fall.

Kind of reminds me of how Whedon was always told he was great and propped up by his blind following until...well you know the rest.

CorndogBurglar - 7/7/2022, 7:26 AM
@UniqNo - It reminds me of Scorsese making excuses for why his latest gangster movie didn't do well in theatres.

These guys have this high opinion of their own work and they refuse to believe that there are people out there that may not agree. Avatar made tons of money. But not because everyone loved the film. It seemed like the general consensus was the movie was just good. But the special effects and 3D at the time made it a spectacle that everyone had to experience.

But here we have Cameron talking as if the first Avatar was an amazing film, which I don't think most people would agree with. Good? Sure. Amazing? No.

I gave it a rewatch a few years back after having been to Animal Kingdom and Flight of the Banshee (hope Way of Water can get close to that immersion) in particular.

I hate to break it to you Jim, but the characters and story really aren't memorable. It's the action, and more importantly Pandora that were great. I'd argue Pandora is even the best character in the movie. Place is endlessly interesting, and visually amazing too.

CorndogBurglar - 7/7/2022, 7:29 AM
@bkmeijer1 - If Avatar didn't have the special effects and 3D on its side back when it came out, it never would have made as much money as it did. The FX and 3D made it a spectacle that made everyone feel like they had to see it or else they were missing out. But I think the general consensus of the movie itself was, "meh. It's good." But nothing to deserve the amount of money it made.

@CorndogBurglar - the VX was impressive and I think it is deserving of hauling in a load of money, but I don't like what it set in motion. A lot of movies were just upgraded to 3D so that they could charge more for it, while it didn't really add anything

I mean, why the [frick] would trolls re-watch the film?

I don't think James understands people (which is evident by the unrealistic dialogue his characters speak).

I saw the film three times at the theaters solely because of the outstanding looking 3D.

The characters didn't seem to have realistic personalities.

The main character was a disciplined, trained Marine who began acting like an undisciplined little boy as soon as he started using his avatar and kept making stupid mistakes.

I'll see the next one because of the 3D, and for no other reason.

Whenever I think about Cameron, I think about the South Park episode where they mocked him.

Sad part is, if it wasn't for his ego, he could have still been making some exceptional movies. Last time he did that was T2. Avatar was mediocre AF, gimmicky tech that didn't really do much. The lead actor is boring AF as well.

All that talent and he's wasting all of it on a mediocre franchise that will never hit the heights of what he's hoping for. We could have gotten some really original new cool stuff like T2. Instead we get more Avatar. Sigh.
