THE MATRIX 4 Star Neil Patrick Harris Explains Why It Didn't Feel Like They Were Shooting A Blockbuster

The Matrix 4 is set to be released later this year, but we've so far seen only a handful of set photos. Now, star Neil Patrick Harris has shed some light on director Lana Wachowski's approach to the movie.

The Matrix 4 is set to be released on December 22nd, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max. We've yet to see a trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, but there are plenty of reasons to be excited, especially as the cast includes names like Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, and Neil Patrick Harris.

When it comes to the new cast members, we don't know who any of them are playing, and Harris didn't share any plot details during a recent interview with Variety.

He did, however, explain why working on The Matrix 4 didn't feel like shooting a traditional blockbuster.

"It didn’t feel large because it felt like she was in her sweet spot, which was filming on the fly, filming using natural light. Sometimes you’d sit around for an hour waiting for the clouds to clear, and then you’d quickly film," the How I Met Your Mother alum explained. "You’d film pages at a time in 30 minutes and then be done. You would think that a giant movie would be 100% storyboarded, animatics, and we’d be checking off shots."

"I think she lived that before three times over, and I would suspect that she wants to do things her own way now," Harris added. "It wasn’t often that you felt that you were doing something gigantic because she made it feel very intimate."

We know those early movies were heavy on visual effects, so with the way technology has advanced, you'd expect director Lana Wachowski to have embraced green screens and the like for The Matrix 4. Instead, it sounds like she's taken a back to basics approach for this sequel, and that could definitely be a beneficial decision for the franchise. We'll have to wait and see.

They ever figure out if they lied about the last few days of shooting and had a wrap party?

First Matrix is alright, really nothing i got into but it worked.

The sequels though.........the wachovskies (probably misspelled that and dont feel like checking) were doing pretentious nonsense with jesus symbolism even before snyder.

Hopefully this one is more in line with the first movie. Like really have any of their movies outside of tye matrix film been successful

@dracula - I've got to finally give the sequels a rewatch. The first Matrix blew my 14 year old mind when I saw it in theaters, but I was a jaded smarty-pants edgeling by the time the sequels came around. I'm sure they are as flawed as I remember them, but I think I would be able to see and appreciate the intentions better with some gray in my beard.

@Spock0Clock - Well good luck, like I said never got all that into them. My father liked them, but while he enjoys the second, he doesn't like the 3rd

@Spock0Clock - Rewatched them last year myself, they are not complete trash but you think they are going somewhere and they aren't. The battle for Zion held up extremely well in the 3rd one and was the highlight of the movie. Very well done.

Unpopular opinion, I suspect, but there is a big part of me that wants Lana Wachowski in Feige's orbit, probably something related to X-Men. Team her up again with Straczynski, maybe.

@Spock0Clock - heard they pitched a superman trilogy at one point that would start in the final days of krypton and would end in the final days of earth. As a concept that sounds interesting, but personally doubt that could be pulled off in a trilogy alone and really not sure about their work as film makers

@Spock0Clock - good choice tbh, Wachowski is a great director and has some directing kinks no other can replicate. Her style would fit the X-Men perfectly.

Obviously the classic "manly-men" parts of the fandom would be opposed to a trans director helming their movie but the X-Men in particular hold a very close relationship to Lana.

I wonder what he has coming up on his plate, because NPC could be great in that Allen Scott role for the GL series.

When you think about it, the first Matrix is awesome and the action scenes are all not over the top cgi but stuntwork and such. So glad movies are going back to this approach.

Using natural light can make your film look so much better compared to artificial light-sources. I've worked on stuff featuring both and natural light always wins out.
Only downside is the lack of availability of it here in europe, usually everything's dark and cloudy so that you only have an hour of good shooting time tops.

Anyways, I'm liking what I'm hearing here. Lana seems to be in her element again and with the more down-to-earth approach this might be more in line with the original movie rather than the sequels.

The first movie is a classic bit of Sci-fi.
As for the sequels well they had their moments but nowhere near as good as the first.
