BLADE RUNNER 2049 Director Denis Villeneuve Has No Interest In Making A Superhero Movie

Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve is one of Hollywood's most brilliant directors right now. Does that mean he would helm the film of one of the industry's hottest genres - a superhero movie?

Superhero flicks are all the rage right now at the box office. And director Denis Villeneuve is one of Hollywood's hottest directors. Naturally, the two would seem like a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, the Blade Runner 2049 has absolutely no interest in ever working on a superhero film.

In the same interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast in which the director revealed he'd be interested in working on a Star Wars film not part of the main saga, Villeneuve was also asked about the prospects of working on a superhero film and if he's ever connected with one.

"No, because I'm not from that culture," Villeneuve said, explaining, "I'm French-Canadian which means that my culture is European. I was influenced by authors from France and Belgium, and Europeans are graphic novelists."

"Honestly, I know very little about... Most of them, I don't know  their name," the director admitted. "I know sometimes I don't know, so it means I'm not the right person to do them. To do those movies you need to love those characters and I'm a stranger."

While it's disappointing to learn that one of the best sci-fi directors of our time has no interest in the superhero universe, it's probably for the best if he's not well-versed in the genre. On the bright side, Villeneuve is hard at work on another classic masterpiece - a film adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune.

I dunno.
I feel there a plenty of viable chacarters in the CBM universe that just as unknown to him as they are to the masses.

If a director changes an unknown fact to little known character...did they make a change?

@Doomsday8888 - seems like those voices would come out in anger to nitpick every word he said here ad an insult to the culture.

That's alright. His time is used better elsewhere. As interesting as it may be I don't need to see Kubrick or Hitchcock have made a superhero movie. At least he didn't put down the genre; it's just out of his field.

Welll that’s some shit. He could blow our [frick]ing minds with the right CB property. Especially Moon Knight

Good.

He doesn't seem like the kind of director that would benefit from the commercial pressures a CBM faces nowadays.

That's okay. We don't have any interest in having him direct a superhero movie either. Prima Donnas aren't needed.

@BeeMo - He wasn't even disrespectful about it. What's your deal?

He should just stick to Dune...then crossing it over with Star Wars!

@Forthas - That idea is horrible.

@InfiniteCipher - Wrong! It would be bigger and easier to do than the Marvel shared universe!

I respect that. While he may not be a fan, he wouldn’t want to do films on characters he’s not a fan of or doesn’t have a passion for. That’s understandable

This is the mindset I wish every director had.

I find sometimes people looking from the outside in can still have a great take. For example director David Mackenzie was born in Scotland but was still able to nail Texas in Hell or High Water...but at the same time id love to see Denis do more original work.

He'd be the guy I would hire for a quieter, introspective hero...

Maybe Silver Surfer?
