Dean Devlin On INDEPENDENCE DAY 2, Will Smith & The STARGATE Reboot

At the end of November, 20th Century Fox gave the green light to a sequel based on 1996's Independence Day. In a recent interview, producer Dean Devlin confirmed Roland Emmerich will direct it and explains why they only got a green light for one sequel.

Over the years, when producer Dean Deviln and director Roland Emmerich have spoken of a sequel to Independence Day they've mentioned that they would like to do two more films and make it a trilogy, but when Deadline reported that 20th Century Fox gave Independence Day 2 a green light it emphasized that Fox only gave the okay for one sequel, not two. Nerd Report recently spoke with Devlin and asked him why that is.

“We decided just to do one first to make sure that people like where we’re going, If that works well, there’s an ability to do some world building which would be really fun and interesting to do. I think Roland and everybody felt, let’s just make sure 20 years later that people still are interested. I think in our case, we started to feel that maybe we were being a little bit arrogant by assuming that we could do two movies. We said you know what, let’s scale it down. Let’s first make sure that it works for everyone.”

The original film helped elevate Will Smith's acting career to A-list status, so it surprised many fans that he wasn't going to reprise his 'Captain Steven Hiller' role. Devlin says he met with Smith many times and even though Smith "seriously" considered it at one point "he decided that doing this wasn’t right for him.”

Another curious thing about Deadline's report is that they mentioned Roland Emmerich, who directed the 1996 film, hadn't officially signed on for the sequel, but Deviln can now confirm, Roland is back to direct."

Now that Devlin and Emmerich are moving forward with Independence Day 2  that means their reboot of Stargate will have to be pushed back, but it'll probably be their next project. Devlin explained, “Unfortunately, we have to wait until we finish Independence Day for that. Roland wants to direct that one too. Hopefully we go into that right afterwards.”

Independence Day (1996) - One of the biggest box office hits of all time delivers the ultimate encounter when mysterious and powerful aliens launch an all-out invasion against the human race. The spectacle begins when massive spaceships appear in Earth's skies. But wonder turns to terror as the ships blast destructive beams of fire down on cities all over the planet. Now the world's only hope lies with a determinded band of survivors, uniting for one last strike against the invaders - before it's the end of all mankind.

More (dated) sequels should take the cautious approach. Terminator, I want you to do well, but first put out a good movie and make sure ppl still want the product.

Yes to what Nail said...

Also, kinda shitty Smith isn't returning because it's not right for "him"...how 'bout right for the movie (now franchise) that started your career and giving back to those involved with the first and the fans...if Jaden ends up being in it instead...I'm [frick]ing done...he's literally the worst actor I've ever seen imo...

I would say a few more After Earth-type flicks & Will would come crawling back to ID4 Part 3, but since he's got the role of Deadshot in the Suicide Squad movie, the chances of that happening are slim. These celebrities know superhero/anti-hero movies are the golden ticket these days (instant franchise--unless done horribly).

I thought the stargate movie was going to be a sequel not a reboot.

when a person says this shit why would you get interested?

we are gonna half ass and underbudget this mother [frick]er like nobodys business. let not even try...

why bother? to hell with this movie. and i bet the stargte reboot never happens.

when they made id4 they went all in and the full 9. this sequel sounds like a [frick]ing garage film in comparison.

yeah, but Independence Day was his first 'break-out' motion picture (Bad Boys his first big one, but not the career starter like Indy imo)...plus, it came out a year before MiB...Prince and rap career were there, but Indy started him on his path to A-lister...

Will smith was trying to get 40 million or something crazy like that for him to be in ID2.

Creating work for himself, more like. He may not be be the the bomb dot com, but other than Godzilla everything he's worked on has been his own stuff. No franchises needed. More than most CBM directors can say, frankly.

Why is there a sequel being made to ID?
And for crying out loud. Why does Star Gate nee a "reboot"? Just continue the darn thing if you even need to do that.

Critics hate his stuff other than ID and The Patriot, but I enjoyed most of his movies for what they are, he's basically has the same style as Michael Bay visually appealing, but appalling storytelling. 10,000 BC what a waste, the most disappointing film of 2008.

Stargate seems to me to be their best, most transportative film, maybe because I was and remained such a huge fan of ancient Egypt and no aliens were speaking damn English and the performances and production seemed so authentic. ...I guess that there's what makes a great film... I bet they'll made ID2 cool in some new ways but I only felt the first one was average. Stargate was more innovative and serious.
PapaSez
PapaSez - 12/7/2014, 9:42 AM
After how badly they almost screwed up the concept of the Stargate (that movie has more plot holes than all the Transformers movies combined) Emmerich and in particular Devlin should not be allowed anywhere near that (or any)franchise. I'd also like to point out that none of their movies have ever successfully transitioned into a series. Hell, only Universal Soldier was 'worthy' of a sequel and we all know how that series turned out. If I were a betting man, I'd say Smith passed on the ID4 sequel because he saw/smelled a script or a story synopsis.

BigDaddyJinx - 12/7/2014, 1:50 PM
Apparently PapaSez doesn't watch that fancy thing called TV else they'd know that Stargate actually made for a very profitable TV franchise (x3). SG-1, Atlantis and Universe.

Just sayin'.
