Now this sounds interesting. Fox will produce a version of the Zorro story which will take place in the future, and have signed the great Mexican thesp Gael Garcia Bernal (Babel, The Motorcycle Diaries, The Science Of Sleep) to play the role.

According to Variety..

Pic is a futuristic reboot of the classic Zorro mythology that will not be set in California or Mexico, despite the story's Western themes. Garcia Bernal will play the character as a masked vigilante bent on revenge.

We last saw the character played by Antonio Banderas in Green Lantern director Martin Campbell's The Legend Of Zorro back in 2005. Sony, who produced both Banderas Zorro movies, are also working on another more conventional origin story based on the first ever Zorro novel. The script for Fox's movie, which has still to sign a director, was written by Glenn Gers, Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy.

The fact that Sony are working on 2 movies based on the same character shows just how dead Hollywood is...

Sorry to nitpick, but actually, 2005 was The Legend of Zorro, the inferior sequel to 1998's awesome The Mask of Zorro.

I hope this one is good.

I think i stay with Martin Campbell´s Zorro movies.
I doubt they can do better than The Mask Of Zorro.

Back about a decade or two ago, they had a sort of "Zorro, 2020" cartoon. I wonder if this is going that direction?

From an older LA Times article - Los Angeles Times - “Zorro Reborn” will remove the famous masked swashbuckler from the original historical California and Mexico settings. ~ In fact, an unnamed source told the LA Times that the new installment will be in the future as “specifically a desolate and post-apocalyptic one.” ~ LA Times described this version will be “less a caped crusader for justice than a one-man vigilante force bent on revenge, in a western story that has echoes of both Sergio Leone and ‘No Country for Old Men.’” ~ The reboot project is currently being developed by Twentieth Century Fox. It will be directed by Rpin Suwannath, a pre-visualization specialist who worked on films such as “X-Men,” “Matrix” and “Chronicles of Narnia” films. ~ The reboot script was written by the writing team of Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy. This project is very early in the development stage.

Apparently this will be Directed by Rpin Suwannath - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0840493/

@ SmellofDuty - Wait, hoooooow futuristic? Not sure I'd like it too far ahead considering he wields a sword.

Futuristic enough to have an "laser" sword and energy whip.
The thing is it's post-apocalypse, so will he have the motorcycle, or go back to the horse?

I prefer a reboot of the classic Zorro, not one invented, then I prefer a movie based on Batman Beyond

@ Jimdlux - Wait a minute...they're making this and not Batman Beyond or Spider-man 2099...Is there something wrong with Hollywood?

Zorro was a Legacy character long before either of those two. And in the movies and serials.

The second Zorro movie 1925 was the Son Of Zorro, Republic did a bunch of serials also featuring later descendants of Zorro, Some set in then contemporary 1930's setting in the city with cars, and swinging from buildings. There's the above mentioned Zorro generation Z
Zorro's fighting Legion serials which heavily influenced Lucas and Spielberg's Indiana Jones, the under the car stunt, the bridge escape the whip use etc..., the trash compactor scene from Star Wars and more all came from the Zorro serials.
In this version he had a modern fantastic sword he pulled from a coiled up compartment in his belt buckle.
Updating Zorro to future settings and legacy characters is not new, there's plenty of precedent for it, he was doing it before Batman or Spider-man.

@ Supes17 - Ok.......So he's going to be BATMAN?! :P

Zorro was Batman decades before there ever was a Batman.
He had the mask, cape, belt full of gear, nocturnal animal symbol/totem, millionaire secret ID, secret lair under the mansion, sleek and black as night mode of transportation etc...

Thanks for the history lesson @Mondragon. I knew some of this but others clearly do not apreciate the rich history of this great character and make bad assumptions :)

I think Gael is a great actor, he's done a lot of different movies all over the world, Mexico, USA, Spain, UK, etc,
He's kinda short but good actor, and while I don't know much about this project I'm sure he'll do good !
Here's a shot at 10 of his best movies !

Zorro was the reason I got into Batman in the 80's, growing up in the 70's I used to watch the Disney TV series religiously. He was Batman before Batman, he had the secret cave, the man servant like Alfred and his Horse was practically the Batmobile.

You kids today just don't know what you missed, the Mask of Zorro movie was excellent but the Legend of Zorro was a let down. I'd rather they'd just reboot the character with Gael Garcia Bernal rather than set it in the future like some cheesy sci fi flick. The guy is one damn fine actor and doesn't need to be thrown into a nerd flick the way Clooney was with Batman and Robin. Actors that good are meant for superior material not cheesy nerd fests. They should adapt the novel by Isabel Allende, that would be a good start!

Futuristic better mean Zorro is a cyborg. With laser eyes.

And unfortunately Bernal kind of disturbs me... he looks way too much like my psycho ex. :\
