Josh Friedman Hired To Work On AVATAR 2 Script With Director James Cameron

Development on the first of two planned Avatar sequels is moving forward, as James Cameron has enlisted Josh Friedman (creator and showrunner of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) to work on the script for the follow-up to the highest grossing film of all time.

According to The Wrap, director James Cameron has hired Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles showrunner and creator Josh Friedman to work on his script for Avatar 2, which is the first of two planned follow-ups to the highest grossing film of all time. 20th Century Fox and producer Jon Landau had no comment on the news. Stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are set to return for the sequel, which is apparently still on course for a 2015 release date. However, production will not begin until late 2013 or early 2014, which makes that date seem unlikely (not to mention the multitude of other blockbusters scheduled for that year). The first movie grossed nearly $2.8B worldwide back in 2010, so expectations are high for the sequels. Are you looking forward to Avatar 2?

Much anticipated? Lmao the sequel lost its hype. I forget the movie is in development until I hear news about it. Not really looking forward to this.

Avatar was just another generic blockbuster the only selling point was the 3D that's it

Good. Maybe he bring in some new ideas instead of recycling old ones. (Looking at you James Cameron)

John Carter was better than Avatar.

They need to not make a sequel, seriously. Let it go.

Im sorry, but like it or not, the only film I see easily breaking the Avengers records is this one. It might also surpass $2billion depending on the word of mouth.
The last one made $2.7 billion.

The script for Avatar2 cannot possibly be any worse than the mess for the first movie.

Incidentally, I thought the first Avatar was kinda... well, not bad, but it was definitely a letdown, and probably the weakest of all of Cameron's films (this side of Piranha 2: The Spawning, anyway...).

But god damn it, if there's one thing James Cameron has proven that he knows how to do right, it's SEQUELS.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Aliens.

Rambo: First Blood Part II (he wrote the first draft, which was polished by Stallone).

I have a sincere hope that the second film can bring some much needed creativity to this franchise and turn it from a punchline into something more concrete-- something worthy of being the highest-grossing film of all time.

Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

hahah love the shit talkers... come the first trailer, they will all be as excited to see this as they were the first one.
Cameron makes stronger sequels, he pushes technology and he always delivers.
Avatar was number one for a reason, becasue EVERYONE was excited to see it

@ Supes17

i think avatar 2 could do avatar total box office gross, but beating the avengers opening i don't know so much.

if you check on box office mojo what avatar did on opening weekends & so on it didn't do that great,it did its money over time it was in cinema's for 34 weeks.

anyway the avengers 2,star wars 7 & batman/superman may all break the avengers records.

I agree, and not only that alot of sci-fi films have been inspired by Edgar rice Burroughs books most notably the John carter novels and wen the John carter came out alot of people thought it was a rip off of avatar and what not and I like the film.

@marvel72: im aware of that. In fact, it was predicted to flop when it first came out, but ended up being the number 1 film of all time. It is famous internationally. That will definetly be a major factor in the sequel's box office winnings.

Avengers 2 also has this advantage due to the first on being such a major success.

I still don't understand how Avatar made so much. Yeah, I saw it opening weekend. Not gonna deny that. It had huge anticipation and might still be the best use of 3D, so it's understandable that it would make mad money. But it was just not that great. Not bad, but nothing I cared to re-watch in the theater or recommend to people and nothing that I'll be rushing out to see a sequel of, if I bother to see it at all.

Tevii - 7/31/2013, 3:37 PM
Melkaticox - um the novelty doesnt need to be 3D.
He pushed computer animation with Abyss and T2, he pushed length of film with Titanic, and he pushed 3D with Avatar. He pushes technology.

Everybody said there was no way Avatar would pull in Titanic numbers too.

I dont know if it will be in the top 3 films, but I do know it will be something worth checking out. So when everyone who is bitching now pays their ticket price to see part 2 just so they can bitch some more, we'll have this same conversation with part 3

I realize there is a sort of backlash to Cameron's success and all but he really is a master filmmaker.
There is no one else quite like him and on his level.

Lets not forget he was one of the pioneers of making sequels better than the originals, among other things.
I cant wait for anything he makes, including Avatar 2!

@Tevii,

Here's one guy who won't be seeing Avatar2 in the theaters unless it's a HUGE jump in script quality over the first. And guess what- I didn't see the first one in the theater either. I heard enough bad stuff that I stayed away.

*sigh* all you want. didnt realize you were the all knowing film maester.

and the pocahontas crap is silly. That premise can be found in Dances with Wolves, Dune, Stargate, Disneys Atlantis, Pocahontas, Last Samurai, Fern Gully, Battle for Terra, the Bible.etc... At the end of the day there are only 5 stories and its about how its delivered and Cameron does it every time..
Tevii
Tevii - 7/31/2013, 3:44 PM
mediaman - ok? it still smashed records. and the second one will be a success. thats all im saying.

I dont know if it will be good or not. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one and a large part WAS the phenomenal 3D. so you missed out, sorry
DarkKnight7
DarkKnight7 - 7/31/2013, 3:54 PM
I like avatar for its visuals but the story was kind of lacking and James Cameron is a pioneer in film we have to credit him for that
MediaMan
MediaMan - 7/31/2013, 4:21 PM
tevii - the second one may very well be a great success, no doubt. and it may be a far superior movie- I like most of Cameron's movies, and love a couple. regardless, it's always good to keep an open mind about these things. just because movie A was bad (or I didn't like it), doesn't mean its followup(s) won't work.

and I agree- watching it on tv, I could tell at least a few or some of those scenes must have looked phenomenal (we're using the same word ;) on the big screen.

I primarily watch movies for their scripts, though, so even with great effects (which I love), i'd have probably gone nuts.

What's with these studios claiming they'll get films out sooner than they can?
No Star Wars 7 in summer 2015. No Avatar 2 in 2015. No Justice League in 2015 as WB once claimed. And Superman Loves Batman will likely be 2016.

people forget that gone with the wind is the highest grossing film ever, not avatar.

still, it means something when the same director breaks his own world record

Avatar 2 won't make nearly as much money as the first one because the 3d craze is dying down and the reason it made so much money is because it was the first big blockbuster that used the technology. Plus it was released in the winter without any competition.
