Legendary Pictures' GODZILLA 3D To Be Released On The Same Day As NINJA TURTLES

Legendary Pictures' GODZILLA 3D To Be Released On The Same Day As NINJA TURTLES

We still don't know an awful lot about Godzilla, although the early footage shown off by director Gareth Edwards certainly impressed those lucky enough to see it at the San Diego Comic-Con. Oh, and your eyes don't deceive you - they are indeed planning to release it in 3D!

THE ICONIC MOVIE MONSTER GODZILLA STOMPS INTO THEATERS ON MAY 16, 2014

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have slated their take on the classic Godzilla franchise to kick off the Summer moviegoing season on May 16, 2014. The joint announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, and by Legendary Pictures.

Toho Co., Ltd.’s Godzilla franchise contains one of the most widely recognized movie monsters worldwide, including more than 25 films, multiple television programs, video games and book series. Legendary, which has been developing the project, and its partner Warner Bros. will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner. The project will fall under Legendary’s overall agreement with Warner Bros.

The film is directed by Gareth Edwards, who earned worldwide acclaim for his feature directorial debut, “Monsters.” Edwards directs from a screenplay by David Callaham (“The Expendables” films), David S. Goyer (the “Dark Knight” trilogy) and Max Borenstein (upcoming “The Seventh Son”). Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce, along with Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher will serve as executive producers alongside Doug Davison, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.

A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. The tent pole film is expected to be presented in 3D.

At this point, it's extremely likely that the Michael Bay produced Ninja Turtles will be pushed back, especially as work on it seems to be moving at an incredibly slow pace. This is yet another fairly confident move from Warner Bros., after they recently upset some fans with the decision to release The Hobbit: There and Back Again on the same day as X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, if the two films do open opposite one another, which do you think will come out on top at the box office? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Really? Warner Bros is doing this again?

First they scheduled The Hangover 3 on a date already claimed by Fast Six, then they scheduled The Hobbit sequel on the date held by X-Men: Days of Future Past and now they're scheduling Godzilla on the same date as Ninja Turtles. Even though there are other free dates in those months.

Can't wait. It's been too long since we've gotten a Godzilla movie, and it looks like the Americans will do it right this time.

Hangover 3 vs. Fast 6
Fast 6 will be a much better movie and will probably do ok business. But Hangover 3 will win because of stupid, stupid people going to watch the same unfunny movie a third time in theaters, instead of torrent-ing it.

Hobbit 3 vs. XM-Days of Future Past
Hobbit 3 wins hands down. Due to Hobbit 3 being only 1/3 of the book, and XMDoFP being directed by Matthew Vaughn from XMFC, we know that XMDoFP will be the better film. But Hobbit 3 will be the last of the LOTR franchise and that will count for a lot, as opposed to the XM franchise to which many have become jaded.

Godzilla vs. Ninja Turtles
Godzilla will be better without a doubt, simply because Ninja Turtles will undoubtedly be one of the worst big budget films of all time. This one's not too sure, but I'm betting Godzilla wins and Ninja Turtles to become Battleship the second (in terms of being a Transformers copycat).

So WB wins, 3/3 financially and 1/3 in terms of quality.

I love Godzilla, I love CBM' S, and I love the hobbit.

X-Men or the hobbit?

I have to say the hobbit will mop the floor. X-Men will not be a flop, but I can't see it beating the hobbit. Just saying

Already set the tent SCURVYDOG619.

...will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner.

Now that's interesting. I have a feeling this film will not disappoint.

@lokibane2012, I can't say that I agree with you about The Hangover vs Fast Six. The Hangover 2 and Fast Five were released in 2011 and even though they both opened with about $85M, Fast Five outgrossed The Hangover by $45M.

Like you pointed out, The Hangover is basically going to be the same film but in a new locale. And even though it has it's fans, it's still the same film.

As for Fast Six, even though it's a 10 year old franchise, this film will transition the franchise into a more action oriented heist series. You have Dwayne Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez returning, as well as the addition of Gina Carano and Luke Evans. This is actually something new.

I honestly think this is going to win. Again, The Hangover has it's fans, but the Fast and the Furious clearly has there's, as well. Judging by the box office, they have more.

Undecided. If I could only see one movie that month, it's going to be TASM 2. If I could only see two movies that month, the other is going to be Ninja Turtles. If I could see three, it's going to include Fast Six.
tazmaniak
tazmaniak - 9/13/2012, 7:29 PM
@AutobotCommander84, Fast Six comes out in 2013, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comes out the same month as TASM 2, Ninja Turtles and Godzilla in 2014.

tazmaniak
tazmaniak - 9/13/2012, 7:49 PM
^Initially, there was supposed to be 2 Hobbit films, with them being released in December 2012 and 2013. But they decided they wanted to turn it into a trilogy. And instead of also releasing the third one in December, they claim they don't want the audience to wait a whole year for the conclusion, so they're releasing it 7 months after the second one. That's July. And even though the 2 weekends before X-Men are free and have no other films being released so far, they still picked the date that already had a film scheduled.
