Matt Smith Almost Agreed To 2 More Years Of 'DOCTOR WHO'

Despite quite a few rumors making waves among its fanbase about who's next in line to play "Doctor Who," there's still a bit more to go in the Matt Smith era. Despite that fact, all eyes are looking forward to the next Time Lord. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly (via Blastr), executive producer Steven Moffat revealed that 2013 was always the end date for Smith according to his initial contract, however, last minute negotiations almost secured Smith for two more years. Said Moffat, "We discussed ages ago that [Matt] would do three series and then he would do the 50th and then he’d do Christmas. That was Plan A for a very, very long while." He continued, "That may sound cold that it was so far in advance but you’ve got to plan a career. [Laughs] The question was, ‘Will I be able to talk him out of it?’ We went out for lunch and he said that he’d come very close to doing another series but it was the same argument: ‘If I do another series, I think I might do two more series, or three more series. I think I might never leave.’"

Rack your brains around that "Doctor Who" fans, Smith almost stayed on for another two years. Are you looking forward to seeing who will be the next Doctor or do you wish Smith had stuck around?

I'll be completely honest, I like Matt better than Tennant, and Tennant isn't even in my Top 3 Doctors.

He's more charming than Tennant was I think, great doctor. But for some reason I still think Tennant was the best, and Eccleston is under rated by far.

Eccleston was my favorite followed by Tennant and I would have to say that Matt at the bottom of the list at number 11.

MATT SHOULD HAVE STAYED. Yet in this show, it was inevitable that we would get a new Doctor.

Wouldnt mind a maturer and older Doctor.

Matt Smith is a good Doctor, but my favorite is Tennant. Bow-ties are *not* cool.

@GrammerCpt fair enough about your choice in doc but bow- ties sir are the bomb! Smith style brought back the qwirky side of the dr's dress sense. I still remember the straw hats and the wooly scarfs he had when I was a kid. Or the wool jumper and white blazer lol

@Marveloverdc you make a valid point sir, I'm just not a bow-tie fan, unless you're Bill Nye.

Indy, shut up, He's doing his best to juggle both, and it's pronounced Moffat. As well as sanjuro, I wouldn't be talking at Matt like that, cause a buncha fangirls will like... Maul you. Besides, does that really make you feel better trashing someone's looks? What about you?

Also Indiana, it's called Doctor Who, not [frick]ing Dr.Who? Got it?

@jackofalltrades great suggestion on alex tudyk as the next doctor he would be a great choice but the british people would kick up a fuss if he wasnt played by a british actor. My choice would be joseph gilgun tho, (misfits, this is england and lockdown.) Or at a push rupert grint.

I'll miss Smith's take on the Doctor. I enjoyed his befuddled and cantankerous personality. Having said that, I'm excited for a new doctor. PLEASE let us have an older Doctor that isn't, "hot".

@rage (slow clap of respect) stroke of genius with Joseph Gilgun my good sir!!! I like it, bit of a streetwise rough around the edges Dr. Scruff and restless. I can see it now. I think it would be a grate new orginal take that would come sidewise! Perfect casting! Need to make this happen!!

BlindJustice
BlindJustice - 7/12/2013, 2:09 AM
@JackofallTrades - That would be great to see!

@ScionStorm - If you knew Doctor Who then you would know that the Doctor can only regenerate into males. It would take a who different female timelord for that and she wouldn't be the same Doctor now would she? I would however like to see it revealed that a certain someone is his daughter...

I'm guessing the Doctor will have to degenerate back into the 10th Doctor...David Tennant. All Who fans know there can be only 12 incarnations, but we'll see what happens.

@rage - Wouldn't it be only fair that we get an American Doctor Who if they get both a British Spider-man AND a British Superman? ;^)

Personally I think that the BBC are scared to go for an older Doctor because they know that they'll lose a lot of viewers; specifically some of the newer fan-girls that are only watching because of Matt Smith.

@Blindjustice as per the mythology Timelord biology is capable of both changing sex and species. This has been mentioned several times throughout the run of the show. Also see previous incarnations of the Master who actually incorporated alien dna into at least one of his regenerations. So if you knew the Doctor as well as you seem to think you do then maybe you would know that The Doctor is fully capable of a male to felmale regeneration mate. Also it happened in the Non-Canon Stephen Moffat written "The Curse of The Fatal Death" I believe Joanna Lumley played the part.

Also there have been 15 Masters so there goes that theory mate. There is always a way around the 13 Regenerations rule.

Matt Smith is not a good Doctor. Moffat killed off the series for me. Haven't watched in for a very long time. Got sick of the show trying to be over clever with it's stories and they were boring for the most part. It became way to much about the companions. [frick] Amy Pond and her twat husband. It's called Dr Who not The Companion show.

Two more years of Matt Smith would've been great. He has been an exceptional and astounding Doctor Who. He brings something special to role that I will miss when he is gone. He can amazingly be quirky, funny, yet bring that serious and dark tone to the Doctor that I haven't seen in Eccleston and Tennant, who were great themselves but too serious at times. I will miss the 11th Doctor. *Bow Ties are Cool*

The only Doctor That stuck around was Tom Baker. I think actors will leave early so they won't get typecast.
