REBEL MOON - PART 2: THE SCARGIVER Is Netflix's No. 1 Movie Worldwide Despite Dreadful Reviews

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon sequel was even less well-received than its predecessor, but the action-packed sci-fi adventure has still managed to climb to the top of Netflix's top ten movie chart...

Critics did not care for Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon movies (or his movies in general, for that matter), but that hasn't stopped them from pulling in a lot of viewers on Netflix.

Rebel Moon - Part 2: The Scargiver debuted on the streamer last week, and the movie was no better-received than its predecessor. In fact, reviews were considerably worse.

The sci-fi sequel currently sits at an abysmal 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a better - but still rotten - audience score of 52%.

Despite these negative reactions, Snyder has a loyal, dedicated fan-base who clearly care very little about the opinions of critics, and The Scargiver has managed to climb the charts to become Netflix's No. 1 movie worldwide. Plus, A Child of Fire has made its way back into the top 10, and is now the fifth most popular movie on the streamer.

Here's how the top 10 is looking heading into the weekend.

1. Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver

2. Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp

3. What Jennifer Did

4. Anna

5. Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire

6. Glass

7. The Bricklayer

8. Hotel Transylvania

9. Damsel

10. The Super Mario Bros. Movie

It's still very early days, so it'll be interesting to see how long The Scargiver can hold on to this position. Still, Netflix must be pleased with the result, so don't be surprised if a third movie is announced down the line. After all, Snyder has already revealed that he has plans for a potential six films.

"Four or six movies, depending... I guess it's whether or not every time we make one of these movies we make two, that's the question," Snyder told the Radio Times in a recent interview. "We were talking about it the other day and I was like, would an audience be disappointed if they only got one movie now from Rebel Moon? Would they be like, 'Oh, it's one now? Great.'"

Did you watch Rebel Moon - Part 2? If so, what did you think? Be sure to drop us a comment down below.

Rebel Moon - Part 2 sees the return of Sofia Boutella as Kora, the titular Scargiver, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Staz Nair, Ed Skrein, and Anthony Hopkins as the voice of evolving robot guardian Jimmy. The sequel will also feature Fra Fee, Cleopatra Coleman, Stuart Martin, Ingvar Sigurðsson, Alfonso Herrera, Cary Elwes, Rhian Rees, Elise Duffy, Sky Yang, and Charlotte Maggi.

"Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver continues the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt, to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld. On the eve of their battle, the warriors must face the truths of their own pasts, each revealing why they fight. As the full force of the Realm bears down on the burgeoning rebellion, unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge, and legends are made."

First movie was one of the worst movies that I've ever watched. People are saying that the second is somehow even worse, so I'm gonna be skipping this. Snyder should not be allowed to write stuff.

I watched it... not that I loved it by any means. But I was definitely part if the problem lol.

I think this is the main issue with streaming; films don't need to be good to do well. Though I of course do want content on the services I pay for, it would be nice if it was actually really good. Netflix certainly has some good shows, but the majority of their original content really isn't that great. Zack is for sure going to get to continue his franchise from the looks of it, which is fine I guess. But it would be nice if there was at least some pressure to make it good in all aspects, rather than just good in how it looks.

I'm a fan of streaming, but it's really guttered the film and TV industry within its quality qhen it gets away with stuff like this.

@RedFury - Streaming is basically the Straight-to-video market in digital form.
Going to Blockbuster and grabbing a straight-to-video rental, you knew you'd either get something serviceable or bad, but very rarely anything great.

Itwasme
Itwasme - 4/26/2024, 11:48 AM
@rkshuttleworth - I didn't find it very interesting. I thought the pacing was very slow and unlike the first there were no real surprises. It's also very exposition heavy. Having a group of people sit around a table telling their origin story isn't very compelling imo. I also thought the dialogue and the acting was clunky. I could nitpick specific things, but that's the gist of it. I'm not trying to change your mind, but you sort of asked so I answered.

What did you like about it though? I'm more interested in hearing what you like because it might cause me to like the film more.

Less messy and all over the place than the first, but that also kind of made it more boring by comparison. I think both are terrible films from a story telling perspective, and while I don’t want to blame the actors directly, there is no authenticity behind any of what are supposed to be the film’s most emotional scenes. People hated Daenerys‘ heel turn at the end of Game of Thrones because it didn’t feel earned, and the audience was being told we should feel a certain way about it that just rang hollow without the required setup. These two movies feel like that the entire way through. Emotional scenes feel completely hollow, and I found it impossible to emphasize with any of the characters because the films introduce an idea in a jam packed and bloated film only to try to cash in on the emotional payoff minutes later. There was no ground work laid for me to care about any of these people, so these scenes where I’m supposed to feel for them just come across as cheesy and cliched. That said, both films are beautiful to look at even if the visuals are a little pretentious and too obvious in their symbolism (did we really need a wheat harvest slow-mo montage?). I watched the making of video, and it definitely made me appreciate Synder’s enthusiasm and talent, but it also emphasized that this man should work as a creative director/producer, or a director of photography, and never be allowed to actually direct another film again. Gorgeous movies with cardboard characters and cliched plots that have no real message of import to add to society. That’s fine for a summer blockbuster action flick, but Snyder’s description of his work makes it seem as if he is touting himself as some sort of auture who is turning the medium on its head to create some groundbreaking art instead of the pop mass appeal consumable product that it actually is.

rkshuttleworth - 4/26/2024, 11:40 AM
@AntiDragon613 - So you didn't watch the first film or really pay attention to know the story. Gotcha.
AntiDragon613
AntiDragon613 - 4/26/2024, 12:52 PM
@rkshuttleworth - No, I watched it and disliked it. Yes, I paid attention to both films, and understood the story. It was poorly told. I’m happy to have a conversation about the films, but your “argument” is to simply attack my intelligence to discredit my opinion, so I doubt you’re willing to actually consider what I have to say. The problems aren’t with the script. I think the story could have been quite good. The problems are in the execution. The pacing is terrible, and there is not enough time spent with any of these characters for the audience to really give a shit about them. I think this might have actually been really good as a series instead, as it would have allowed things to breathe a bit more and the emotional moments would feel more earned and have greater impact. The first film is way too bloated and has serious pacing issues, and the second film suffers as a result of the lack of character development because the first just didn’t bother with it. The second film then assumes the audience cares about these characters and jumps right into trying to cash in on plot lines that weren’t well established, which comes across as hollow cliched daytime TV melodrama instead of the emotionally impactful moments they should be.

Some people probably need to update their awareness of the streaming situation. Netflix has won, at least for now. Look it up.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 4/27/2024, 10:16 AM
@RealTurner - Yup, I mean folk are fair to have an overall opinion on quality of content but Netflix is miles ahead on total subs and views of all rivals with only Amazon membership numbers close but for many that is only due to wanting the advantages of having prime for shopping and nothing to do with their streaming service at all that got tacked onto that.

So sure, folk can say their stuff is hit and miss, or even plain bad in regard to content (even tho I'd argue some has been great and amongst the best quality TV going such as Sandman or Daredevil if talking CBM related).

However it is never accurate or reasonable to say nobody watches Netflix.

For instance in the UK the viewership of standard TV has dropped year one year as more and more turn towards streaming for home viewing.

Currently standard TV still clocks in at just under 80% tuning into it on a weekly basis but that is spread across 480 channels available and the average time watchin standard TV is similarly in decline down to under 2h30mins daily on average (which if Rebel Moon was on it with ad breaks wouldn't be suffice to finish it).

Internet service however, in the UK, the average is well over 3 hours screen time daily (that does however include stuff like Youtube) and as I say Netflix has the biggest share of the subscription services for TV/Film in regard to viewship figures by a wide margin (even over free services like BBC's Iplayer) and clocking in at around a total 40,000hrs of viewing in 22' and 23'.

As a fan of his earlier stuff, it is disappointing to see what has come of his work. I don't know what happened, but his stuff just seems very bloated. I keep hearing about director cuts, if I were the producer I would be absolutely irritated. Why is he going in filming with the intent of a 4-5 hour director cut when they are trying to sell a 1.5 to 2 hour movie. Instead of dedicating time to 4-5 hours, hone your craft and focus on the main product first. Maybe things like the dialog and plot would be better. I feel this indulgence may be getting in the way of him making some really awesome movies. Sometimes limitations make you squeeze the most out of a situation.

Having something available on a service I’m already paying for makes the decision to watch even the most garbage content an easy one with little to no consequence.
