BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Tracking Suggests $85M+ Opening

Back in 2009, Star Trek earned a decent (but not hugely impressive) $385 million worldwide. However, that was enough to result in the brilliant looking Star Trek Into Darkness being given the green light and early tracking suggests a good opening for the sequel. Read on for details!

According to Variety, early tracking indicates that Star Trek Into Darkness will open with an impressive $85 million on May 17th in North America. While this would make it a record debut in the history of the franchise, it's not all that much higher than 2009's Star Trek (that took $70 million - ticket prices have increased since then and this instalment will be released in 3D). Other analysts believe the sequel may reach upwards of $90 million; with a budget of $185 million, there's no doubting the fact that Star Trek Into Darkness will do well. However, it's biggest challenge will be overseas. The first instalment struggled to find an audience. Back in the US, the J.J. Abrams helmed movie will have to face off against box office juggernaut Iron Man 3 in its third week.





When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

@ Marvel72 - Don't act surprised, you know Iron Man is the more popular franchise. Iron Man has 3 movies in the last 5 years, the last of which posted a billion.

Star Trek made less than Superman Returns.

I can see them making 90-95 Million, just as I can see Man of Steel making 125 million in week 1.

Star Trek has never been big internationally the way Star Wars is.It has its fans world wide of course but those are the true believers.Causal movie goers overseas are not that into Trek.

marvel72@ how is star trek more popular than iron man if they only made a decent 385 million worldwide in 2009 and both iron man made great 500s and 600 million around the world. both Iron man also mad more in the usa than stark trek. they made 312 million and 318 million against 250 million from star trek. and i am not even conting the avengers success that also has iron man..

but i know what you mean, it s like saying the hulk is more known than iron man but their movies only made half of what the 2 previous iron man did. more popular doesnt mean that people will be as interested or it will be a success.

The real question is indeed if the last film managed to win the franchise any fans overseas. It really didn't do anything spectacular outside of the US.

As for how high it will go, we'll have to see if it's any good. The "newness" of it may have worn off now, and some of the shaky scripting of the first one might not be as forgivable a second time around.

i'm on about star trek in general not just one movie by jj abrams,the following for star trek from the 60s tv show to star trek into darkness must be a huge fan base.

i personally only ever liked star trek wrath of khan & star trek first contact but abrams renewed my interest in star trek.
