Lucasfilm Releases Statement Clarifying Role Of The STAR WARS "Expanded Universe" In Future

Fans have been wondering just how much of a role that the "Expanded Universe" stories will play in future Star Wars TV shows and movies, but Lucasfilm have cleared it up now once and for all. The answer? None. Only the Disney produced material will be considered canon in future!

For over 35 years, the Expanded Universe has enriched the Star Wars experience for fans seeking to continue the adventure beyond what is seen on the screen. When he created Star Wars, George Lucas built a universe that sparked the imagination, and inspired others to create. He opened up that universe to be a creative space for other people to tell their own tales. This became the Expanded Universe, or EU, of comics, novels, videogames, and more.

While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.

Now, with an exciting future filled with new cinematic installments of Star Wars, all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected. Under Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy’s direction, the company for the first time ever has formed a story group to oversee and coordinate all Star Wars creative development.

“We have an unprecedented slate of new Star Wars entertainment on the horizon,” said Kennedy. “We’re set to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, and continue the adventure through games, books, comics, and new formats that are just emerging. This future of interconnected storytelling will allow fans to explore this galaxy in deeper ways than ever before.”

In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe. While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe. For example, elements of the EU are included in Star Wars Rebels. The Inquisitor, the Imperial Security Bureau, and Sienar Fleet Systems are story elements in the new animated series, and all these ideas find their origins in roleplaying game material published in the 1980s.

Demand for past tales of the Expanded Universe will keep them in print, presented under the new Legends banner.

On the screen, the first new canon to appear will be Star Wars Rebels. In print, the first new books to come from this creative collaboration include novels from Del Rey Books. First to be announced, John Jackson Miller is writing a novel that precedes the events of Star Wars Rebelsand offers insight into a key character’s backstory, with input directly from executive producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Weisman.

And this is just the beginning of a creatively aligned program of Star Wars storytelling created by the collaboration of incredibly talented people united by their love of that galaxy far, far away….

It would be hard to have all the animated shows and comics be in line with what Disney has planned for SW.

And give me a Boba Fett movie already it is well overdue.

There's been some great stories in the Expanded Universe, but at the end of the day it's all just glorified fanfiction.

I know this probably will never happen, but I would love to see a Knights of the Old Republic movie.

It's tough with this new trilogy. They always say that it's canon, but now it is pretty obvious it is not.

Well, tbh it does make sense. There are so many things, they can't just say that everything is canon! It's sad though because some are really great!

It's hard trying to be excited for the new star wars movies
Especially after those prequels

I'm confused. Are they saying new films will tell new stories but not contradict the EU? Or are they saying only EU stuff not retconned by new films will continue to be canon? I'm not a fan of all the post-Jedi stories so I don't mind some of them being disregarded but I'm unclear as to what exactly they mean in all of that above.

NICE!
@captainireland - they are saying the 6 films and this new series Star Wars Rebels are canon...that the EU exists and provides them stuff they CAN pull from, but it's not canon.

I [frick]ing hate the EU

@ Captainireland

In simple terms a lot of these new stories will not be linked up to the events of the movies, but at the same time they will not discredit the films or contradict the events that have taken place.

Only the OT is cannon everything else including the prequels in fanfic as far as I'm concerned. Some of it I like, some not so much. We'll see what JJ can do with Ep. 7

I will always love the Star Wars comic books I have, but if Lucasfilms ignores them on-screen, I have no problem with it. At least they are borrowing some elements instead of completely discarding the EU.

[frick]ing bullshit. I hope (and expect) this movie bombs so hard. Calling it right now that it will be complete garbage.

Let's be honest...The EU was pretty much dead in the eyes of Lucas. Even if he didn't sell Lucasfilm to Disney, the EU would still be nonexistent.

I was reading on slashfilm .com it sounds like Disney doesn't know what to do with how to make a Boba Fett movie.

I knew it was going to happen... but I'm still pretty bummed about it. It does clean things up I suppose. No more arguments over which Boba Fett origin is the real one and stuff like that

I'm fine with them retaining some EU.

So do they mean to tell me that if a novel gets written that takes place after Episode 9, then if they decide to make an episode 10, it will follow events of what happened in the novel?

I find that hard to believe.

The films ALWAYS trump everything else. If they don't like something that happens in a novel, I really doubt they won't change it.

I think the big takeaway here is that they are fine to use THINGS from the EU as springboards for new content (Characters/places/orginizations/creatures/etc...) but if they decide to use something created in a novel, they will be rewriting it to fit the new stories they want to tell.

So, as the article mentioned, Seinar Fleet Systems will "exist" in the post-mouse universe, but any stories that were told in the novels involving them haven't happened. Only the details of their history presented to you by Mickey from today forward should be considered "canon".

So as of right now, Boba Fett is still dead, because until we see him climb out of the sarlaac in the new canon it never happened except in the imaginations of EVERYONE EVERYWHERE.

No, they mean they will sue the pants off whoever writes a novel after episode 9 that isn't LucasFilm approved. A book written after 9 now, will likely be connective tissue to movie 10, and so on. Disney has stated LucasFilm is a movie making company from now on again too, and they want SW movies to go on ad nausium.

So..... where does this leave the HOLIDAY SPECIAL.

That was always the one weird little skeleton in the closet that was always considered full-on film canon?

I'm alright with that :)
