STAR WARS: John Boyega Would Have Also Liked To See More From Luke Skywalker In The Sequel Trilogy

After playing Finn in the Star Wars sequels, John Boyega is well-versed in what it's like to be part of the iconic franchise, and he's admitted Lucasfilm may have dropped the ball on legacy characters.

Looked at as standalone sci-fi movies, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi are actually pretty good (the less said about The Rise of Skywalker, however, the better). As Star Wars films, though, they really dropped the ball, particularly when it came to those returning legacy characters.

For example, fans never even got to see Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia on screen together at the same time, a baffling decision in a trilogy that saw them sidelined in all manner of disappointing ways.

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com), Finn actor John Boyega (who was tapped to be one of the new faces of the franchise alongside Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac) admitted that even he was disappointed to see Star Wars so quickly move beyond the characters who made the franchise beloved.

"I’ll always have some level of nostalgia [for The Force Awakens]. To a certain extent, there should have been a Stormtrooper rebellion," the actor says, reflecting on missed opportunities. "And then to flesh out Luke’s character a bit more. Give him more moments of redemption, which I feel like was needed after VIII [The Last Jedi]."

"I feel like Star Wars fans needed more time with [the old characters] that we love so much."

Despite being ready to move on from Star Wars, Boyega remains a fan. "Industry issues have nothing to do with Star Wars and me being a fan of it. I’ve been watching Obi-Wan, I’ve been watching The Mandalorian. I’m still forever going to be a fan of this franchise. As far as Finn is concerned? I’m good on that. I’ll be watching [if Ridley and Isaac were to star in a new trilogy]."

Boyega is clearly done with the Star Wars franchise, and his comments about those legacy characters are spot on. Lucasfilm finding new, younger leads made perfect sense, but the handling of Luke Skywalker was abysmal. While he's found redemption in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, it's sadly too late to do anything about how his story ultimately ended.

What do you think about Boyega's Star Wars comments?

@kylo0607 - I didn't mind Luke being where he was at at the start of The Last Jedi, and the arc he had. But his triumphant return shouldn't have been his last moment. He should have stuck around until the next movie. Let him be back as a hero for a while before he makes a noble sacrifice in episode 9. That would have been way more satisfying.

@kylo0607 - made him a memorable character? Yeah, what a shame.

TLJ is still best SW movie since empire.

@Toonstrack - Case? All I have to do is to look at your other comments to see yours... if you believe tlj respects what SW is I don't really have a lot to say, sorry.

And yea, I'm kinda mad still cause a SW trilogy isn't something you do every week, they had zero plans and they already admitted it.

George had a basic storyline which they disregarded. JJ left a frickin spreadsheet with his ideas for each craracter and overall arc but Ryan decided to throu it away too.

If you like TLJ and RoS it's OK, can't argue opinions. But mine it they dropped the ball big time by changing pace soo much. I guess we can agree at least on this, perhaps?

@Fogs - the original trilogy was made without a plan either. Most trilogies in fact are made without a plan. The avengers movies weren't even planned out, weeding said his thanos would be an entirely different character if he did it.

Also, for obvious reasons I dont exactly miss the prospect of a Lucas written ST, I'll take what we got gladly after the PT he did. Dude is an idea man but not a brilliant writer on his own.

@Toonstrack - We totally shouldn't sugar coat the prequels indeed, I can agree on that. We only differ on our views on VIII-IX.

Cheers
