STAR WARS LEGENDS Writer Drops Some Hints About Which Stories Might Inspire James Mangold's Movie

The Expanded Universe may no longer be a thing but a veteran Star Wars novelist may have shed some light on where Lucasfilm and James Mangold are looking for inspiration for the planned spinoff movie...

Despite reports that Disney has pulled the plug on plans for Star Wars spinoffs, we've since learned that Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi are indeed still moving forward, with the former set to be directed by Logan helmer James Mangold. At this point in time, little is known about the direction the movie might take but a veteran Star Wars Legends novelist may have finally shed some light on that.

During a recent interview, Daniel Keys Moran revealed that he's spoken with Disney on a number of occasions and that his Boba Fett short story, "The Last One Standing: The Tale of Boba Fett," is going to serve as inspiration for the movie. For those of you who haven't read that, it focuses on Boba Fett's early life, documenting his fixation on and rivalry with Han Solo, and establishes much of his origin.

"I’ve had a guy at Disney email me a couple times over the years regarding Lucasfilm adapting Last One Standing into a Fett movie," Moran said. "Not asking permission, they own those works, just letting me know they were thinking about it. So that was kind. But after Solo stiffed, apparently there’s some question about the Fett movie being made." If that tale is adapted, expect to see Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo
to return because he plays a key role in the story and would be essential to it.

Whether or not Boba Fett is going to happen remains to be seen but with Mangold busy for the next couple of years, it won't be for a while yet. What do you guys think of these details? Sound off below.

Boba Fett is a pointless character to adapt. He’s nothing but a cool action figure & barely a character in the films. He’s so pointless, he got killed by a blind man

Having said that, if you make a Boba Fett film there are 2 ways to go about it:

1. This is what fanboys would prefer. Basically Judge Dredding Boba Fett. We don’t learn his past or anything about him. We just follow him on a dangerous bounty he’s hunting for. I don’t like it because it’s boting, dull, & predictable. It would feel like a film a hack would make

2. Unmask Boba. Let us get to know him as a character & get attached to him. Have it set early in his career. Look at what the 1313 game was going for a try to match that. We could have a film about a son trying to follow in his father’s footsteps & the difficulty he has in wanting to be like his father & doing whatever it takes to be the best bounty hunter out there. Given how Mangold had Logan be a film about fathers, I could see him going in this direction. This will be a film about family legacy & Boba trying to be like his father. It’s a much more emotional connected story. Fanboys won’t like it because they just want pointless action without consequences (see Vader Rogue One scene) but it’s a film I’d see Mangold making & one id be interested in seeing

@LEVITIKUZ - I'm honestly just kinda hoping for Option 3:

All of the Above

I want the films to explore the themes you mentioned for option 2, but basically the plot of option 1.

Its just gonna be terrible unless theres a creative change at Lucasfilm, So honestly I don't want them touching obi wan or boba fett, and it would be better if his film was a badass western where he never takes his mask off, base it on the good the bad and the ugly, and that would be badass, you do these films, because they are films, we don't need to humanize star wars characters.

Last Man Standing would be a good story to adapt. The ending was my favorite in all of the EU.

wouldve been cool. too bad whatever you write leads to episode 8 anyway.

The only way to peak my interest again is to cop out and say that there was a shift in the timeline, erasing certain points in time. You already introduced time travel, may as well capitalize on it. This would, in a small way, make the EU canon, yet retain its legends banner so your rebrand was not a waste of your time. The events have been erased, yet they occurred. At least I could tell myself that the events happened, then were erased, and now you have a playground just like Star Trek does. Keep the old intact, yet rewrite history, making two huge stories all a part of one history. To know the whole story, you need to know the EU. Simple. Everyone wins.

Before you throw this idea back down my throat, just remember I'm trying to be civil for once.I hate episode 8, but I'm trying to hold on to some shred of hope that someday, some director will have the stones to have some character at least say: "there were legends about what happened, but that history was warped by time travel." That's all. If someone did that, the opening crawl and that theme song that starts every episode of Star Wars will mean something to me again.

@hartley07 - in fact if this were the case, whenever a bad movie came out, the die hard fans could still say, meh doesnt really matter that much, because the time line has screwed it all up. The end of this gigantic story will work out fine, so its ok. Besides, I can still read Heir to the Empire in peace, because it really IS what happened once upon a time, and no one can tell me its just fan fiction anymore.

@ExpertlyMediocr - i still have a copy of his new thrawn book i never started, back when I was willing to give a new timeline a chance. Until they fix star wars after the ridiculousness of ep8, i have no interest in reading it, even if it is awesome. Again, one little line about time travel making legends disappear, and I'm right back in and I'll read it.

Mara would be pretty cool, but again, it's not really HER until they fix Star Wars.

I was hoping so badly that when leia called for help in ep8, that the outrider and the moldy crow would show up to help. there would not need to be any name drop or anything, but just knowing that Kyle and Dash are out there somewhere means all those hours playing games and reading was not a waste of my time. I was willing to have a new timeline because I thought, oh look, they immediately made a thrawn book again, theyll bring other EU characters back, but they never have. Then when Jake Skywalker happened, I knew that it doesn't matter what they do from now on, the story is botched unless they can time travel.

@hartley07 - How about this?

STAR WARS
Episode IX
THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

The New Republic and the fledgling Resistance have been decimated by the First Order. The galaxy, under the rule of EMPEROR REN, is in turmoil. Billions are starving and dying as the First Order tries to control the population and resources.

Following in Darth Vader’s footsteps, Kylo Ren and his loyal Knights of Ren are tracking down and murdering all of the force sensitive beings he can find, including younglings. Only Rey has eluded them.

After Emperor Ren’s betrayal and murder of his mother, Leia Organa Solo, Finn and GENERAL POE DAMERON, hunted by the First Order, lead separate missions to recruit freedom fighters for the new REBELLION…

Similar to the opening of ANH, we pan under a huge FO star destroyer moving into position over a planet below. As we pan out, we see that there are several of them. On the bridge of SD we see a FO commander watching out of the view port as a subordinate reports to him. “Sir, all ships are in position. Our informant reports that the meeting is in progress and that General Dameron is present.” Without looking away, he responds, “Good. Have all ships launch fighters. I don’t want them escaping.”

We see 3PO sitting in the pilot seat of the Falcon as an alarm starts. “Oh, no! They’ve found us! I have to warn them.” Threepio frantically calls for Poe over his comlink.

We see Poe and Chewie in a room talking with several local freedom fighters dressed in paramilitary gear. There’s a break in the conversation as the freedom fighters are discussing Poe’s proposal among themselves. Poe’s comlink buzzes and a frantic 3PO is calling “General Dameron! General…!”, but Poe say’s “Not now 3PO, we’re in the middle of something here…”. “But, Sir! They’ve found us! Several Star Destroyers have arrived and are launching fighters!” At that, Poe jumps up and turns to Chewie, “We gotta go….” Turning to the others he says, “We don’t have time for a debate. If you’re with us, you need to come with us right now.” Without waiting for an answer he turns and leaves the room.

Suddenly there are multiple explosions around the city as the Star Destroyers open fire. We then see Poe and Chewie, and the freedom fighters, running through the city, avoiding multiple explosions. Poe yells into his comlink, “Threepio, get ready for a quick takeoff…[a nearby explosion]…and if I don’t make it, tell my wife that I love her.” They make it to the Falcon and 3PO, piloting, quickly takes off just before the place where they were explodes.

Finn and Rose, with R2 in tow, are meeting with a small group of freedom fighters on another planet. They are trying to convince the group to join with them to rebuild the rebellion that took down the first Empire. Among the group is Lando, who started the group after the FO destroyed one of his businesses. Little do they know that the FO found out about their meeting (from an informant…similar to ANH) and is closing in on their meeting location. Bursting in, the whole group is captured. As they are being led away in cuffs, a couple of Lando’s men attempt to escape. In the commotion, Lando is killed by FO troopers as Finn and Rose also break away. R2 helps the escape attempt, but is blown up in the process. As they are running, Rose looks back and sees a trooper sighting on Finn. She throws herself in front of Finn, taking the shot in her back. Finn is horrified, but turns and flees.

On the other side of the galaxy, Rey is studying the old Jedi books from TLJ. The camera shows her hands holding the books…she’s wearing a wedding ring. Yoda comes to her and teaches her how to force meditate (much like he did for Luke on Dagobah). She has a force vision (again similar to Luke) and tells Yoda that she sees her husband, Poe, Chewie, and others in trouble, and dying. She sees Finn, cowardly running away, chased by the FO. She sees lots of death and destruction and the dark side consuming everything because of Kylo. Yoda tells her similar to what he told Luke, that it is a possible future that she sees through the force. She asks him about Kylo and mentions that, through their “force connection” she learned that it was Snoke that seduced Ben to the dark side. She tells Yoda how Kylo turned on Snoke and killed him, but that drove him further to the dark side instead of towards the light.

As the Falcon attempts to get away, a whole squadron of FO TIE fighters chases them. (The FO were attacking the city trying to get the last few remaining Resistance members). The Falcon takes a lot of damage, but manages to take out several TIEs while avoiding the turbo lasers of the SD’s. Just as the Falcon goes to jump to lightspeed and get away, the remaining TIE’s concentrate their laser fire and missiles…destroying the Falcon. (at this, all of the OT characters have been killed off)

Rey senses their deaths. Alone and distraught, she searches for what, if anything can be done. All seems lost. Suddenly, through their force connection, she sees Ren. He has reached out to her, and see that she is sobbing. Behind him we see a large screen with an image…it’s the “living” painting of the Father, Son, and Daughter that was in Rebels season 4. “You!”, Rey screams at him. “You killed everyone that I love!” But he just stares back at her for a moment, then a small smile comes to his face. He is feeling the dark side swell at him through her anger. Then, calmly, he says to her, “Now there is nothing keeping you from joining me. Together we can cleanse this galaxy and bring order and peace.” (or something like that).

[I plan to add something in here about the Knights of Ren hunting down force sensitive people. One scene will be in Canto Bight where they find “broom boy” and kill him. At some point, the Knights of Ren find Rey, but she defeats them (gotta have some lightsaber duels in a SW movie!), however, not before they are able to report her location back to Ren. At some point, Rey has another force vision in which she sees Ben as a jedi and the galaxy is at peace and people that have been killed are alive and well. She understands that the force is showing her some kind of possible future…or something.]

Yoda, again, comes to her and tells her to seek out Ahsoka Tano in the Unknown Region (Not only would it even more connect to Rebels, but it could be similar to the Dark Empire comics where Leia meets Vima da Boda). Rey uses the force to guide her and finds an old worn down Ahsoka. Rey tells her about all that is happening in the galaxy, about the dark side permeating everything. Eventually, Ahsoka tells Rey about the World Between Worlds…and that she and Ezra found a “living” painting of the “Father, Son, Daughter” in the Unknown Region [the FO also are looking for this]. She takes Rey there. When they get there, Ren is also there. He attempts to convince Rey and/or Ahsoka to take him in. She doesn’t, so a fight insues. In the middle of the fight, Ahsoka tells Rey to go, that she’ll keep Ren busy. Rey goes in and finds a portal where Ben is very young and Snoke sees him for the first time. Knowing that Snoke is strong in the force, she withdraws herself from it (like Luke did in the ST) so that she can get close to him. Determined, she steps into the portal and uses a vibroblade to stab him in the back.

As Snoke is dying, Rey, tries to get back through the portal to her time. She does, but then has to find her way out of the WbW. Again, she does, but when she emerges, Ahsoka is gone and everything looks different. We then get a montage of a completely different galaxy. As a way of showing the New Republic is thriving, we see the NR Senate chambers (like in the PT) where they are all cheering. The camera pans to show the Chancellor is Holdo with Connix (Carrie Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd’s character) as her aide. Above Coruscant Poe is leading a squadron of New Republic "newer model" X-Wings or even E-Wings (another nod to the EU), Rose and her sister can be seen working on a NR K-Wing bomber in a large hangar, Luke and his wife have several kids, as do Han and Leia. 3PO and R2 are seen chasing around a playful BB-8, Chewie and his family are there with the Solo’s as is Lando. On Yavin IV there are lots of Luke's New Jedi Order with Ben Solo as a Jedi Master, “broom boy” is among the jedi trainees. There is no sign of the FO, but Finn is seen with a family of his own visiting his parents (after deserting the FO, he actually gets away and finds his family).

Lastly, we see Rey vanish, her clothes falling to the ground, as she becomes one with the force. She made the ultimate sacrifice to save the galaxy.

The End

The story of how the FO is defeated and all of the other stuff leading up to what we see at the end of 9 could then be in animated and live action tv shows, books, comics, etc.

So, a reboot of the ST, without getting rid of the existing episodes 7 and 8 movies. What do you think?

@ExpertlyMediocr - thanks dude, yeah i envy people who didnt read the books until after, the suspension of disbelief hasn't been corrupted for you. When you go to the theater, that opening crawl still gets you excited to see what comes next. I got that feeling 25 years ago reading the books, but its not the same anymore because they treat my favorite stories like fan fiction, when it is 100% clear that they were never marketed as such. So when I see that opening crawl, all that excitement is lost, since I know 90% of the audience doesn't even know the books existed in the first place. Again, if they can manage to do a time travel thing, or at least acknowledge more EU characters in some way, I'll jump back on board and be excited in the theater again.

I'm picking up copies of the EU without the legends banner for my father for xmas and birthdays and stuff now, since he never read them.

@Skywalker2B - I think something along those lines would be great. I always told myself if it ended in a way that looks the way the EU did when Luke set up the Jedi Temple, I would be ok with it. This ending you wrote where time is reset, combining both old and new, would be amazing. I know a lot of people don't want a time travel thing, but at this point, this would fully restore my enthusiasm for star wars. Well done.

Maybe the only thing I would change is maybe have Rey get beat up by the Knights of Ren pretty bad, even if she wins the fight, just to show she is not perfect. Even as is, that ending is amazing.

@hartley07 - where was time travel introduced?
hartley07
hartley07 - 7/7/2018, 9:41 AM
@Trimount - rebels. there is a secret hallway with doors that open up to significant points in time. ezra pulls ashoka out of a duel with darth vader. in theory, he could've gone through other doors which lead to obiwan teaching Luke about the force, or jyn erso stealing the plans. in the episode, the temple in which one of these doorways was found was destroyed, but I assume there are other ways to get into that hallway, or world between worlds. if one was to reset history, you could potentially reset the EU as canon, erase any moviesyou like from canon, or the obvious middle ground, would be to combine old history with new, gaining back some of your fans.

I've said it on so many Fett articles. But the way to have your cake and eat it too would be to have Fett in the Sarlacc Pit. the gases and digestive acids eating away at him. This causes him to experience vivid flashbacks of his life.

Enter the origin story.

Have the film shift between past and present. Halfway through the film he escapes the Sarlacc Pit and goes on one last mission. Probably to go after "the one bounty that got away" or some personal enemy from his past or something.

This way we have the origin story. Him escaping the pit. And we know what he did afterwards. End the film with Boba Fett abandoning the armor and helmet and starting a new life no longer in his father's shadow

@VicSage - It could expound on the destructive nature of an obsession and how Boba's preoccupation with revenge metaphorically eats away at him, considering Force users are among those who could EASILY trump his peak physical condition. Maybe his last score involves a force user (possibly someone reminiscent of Windu) and he becomes sympathetic to the jedi cause. It could be a positive arc involving Boba shedding the burden placed on him by his father's clout and learning to trust again, or it could be a negative arc where Boba stays stuck in his selfishness and is blinded by his purported infallibility, which results in his downfall when he faces force users or aliens that naturally outclass humans like Durge or Bossk.

VicSage
VicSage - 7/6/2018, 12:15 PM
@brek - I really like that. Instead of doing the usual story of a son learning to look up to his father and following in his footsteps, it's a story about forgetting legacy and moving on. Because, in all honesty, Boba is only a bounty hunter because his dad was one and because he wanted to avenge his death. Subsequently, he became one just cause. Would be interesting to see him drop his hatred and move on from that. Live a life of relative "peace". We could probably also learn more about how the Fetts are Mandalorian imposters too.

I'm not sure these Boba Fett movie naysayers know just how much story there is to mine here. I thought the whole point of these spin-offs was to explore stories like this!

"I thought the whole point of these spin-offs was to explore stories like this!"

Tis an optimistic viewpoint you have there...

Sadly though, the reality is that they wanted to milk the series for all it's worth.

Rogue One was going to get a sequel.
Han Solo was going to be a trilogy.

Make no mistake that if a Boba Fett film is made, they will milk it if it's popular.

Heck, at one point i remember reading a remark that they had over 30 years of untold stories from between Episode 6 and 7 which they could draw from if they desired.

@VicSage -
Despite claiming that no sequel for Rogue One was ever planned, a sequel was created in the form of a comic and despite leading into 'A New Hope', Rogue One did leave some interesting aspects to potentially spin-off from.

The original ending was intended for Jyn and Cassian to survive for that reason, setting up the characters to be explored in a film set between 'A New Hope' and 'The Empire Strikes Back' during the three years between and cover "where the Rebel Alliance was driven from their former base on Yavin IV by the Galactic Empire."
Scarilian
Scarilian - 7/6/2018, 4:27 PM
The general audience;
• Have no understanding of who Bobba Fett is
• Have demonstrated they are not watching the spin-off's given Solo bombed
• Are even less likely to support a Boba Fett film due to being less recognisable than Han Solo

The OT fans/older fans;
• Have boycotted Solo and are likely to boycott Episode 9 and a Bobba Fett film
• Do not care for the portrayal of the character
• Feel that the spin-off focusing around the character is unnecessary

General Star Wars fans;
• Feel they are unable to voice a viewpoint on the movies
• Seem to view the franchise more as an increasing collection of bad movies with 2-3 good films
• Are generally being viewed as toxic and unlikely to support future films if they continue to be attacked

The new fans;
• Have no familiarity or connection to Boba Fett outside of seeing the character as a meme/joke in parody videos
• Have no interest in seeing spin-off's focused on OT characters when they are not interested in the world building established in Episode 7 and dropped in Episode 8
• Are discouraged by being attacked on social media

====

Truth of the matter is that the spin-off films are nothing more than Disney looking at what could be profitable and finding memes to adapt - mixed with what they believe is profitable via market research.

Han Solo is profitable in theory due to his name
Boba Fett is profitable in theory due to his armour
Prequel (Rogue One) is profitable in theory due to Death Star

Etc...

That is how they are deciding.
