Terence Stamp Looks Back On His "Boring" STAR WARS Experience; Criticises George Lucas

Well, here's one actor who most certainly WON'T be campaigning for a return in Star Wars: Episode VII! Thanks to director George Lucas, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace turned out to be a hellish experience for the Superman actor. Read on for details!

"We didn't get on at all," Terence Stamp told Empire Magazine in a recent interview when asked about his time working with George Lucas on Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (in which he played Chancellor Valorum). "I didn't rate him that much as a director, really. I didn't feel like he was a director of actors; he was more interested in stuff and effects. He didn't interest me and I wouldn't think I interested him." Ouch. So, Stamp didn't think much of Lucas as a director and as an actor that's an opinion he's more than entitled to. Surely he wasn't all that bad to deal with though was he? Well... "I came all the way back from Australia to do it. I didn't want to but my agent leaned on me and I wanted to meet Natalie Portman because I'd seen her in The Professional. And I did meet her and she was absolutely enchanting. But on the day I'm supposed to do my scene with her, for which I'd travelled halfway around the world, I said, 'Where's Natalie?' And George says, 'That's Natalie,' and points to a bit of paper on the wall. It was just boring." So, regardless of Lucas' involvement - or lack thereof - with Episode VII, don't hold your breath for a return of the actor as the Chancellor!

Stamp is a brilliant actor. He was General Zod for Pete's sake. What he has to say seems to be consistent with other tidbits that have come out over the years - and it SHOWS in the work - the Prequel films are visually stunning, but the acting and story are clumsy and clunky at best. You had some pretty awesome actors in it, I wouldn't consider Ian McDiarmid lower standard...BUT they didn't shine, the special affects were blatantly a priority.

Kudos to Lucas for advancing audio and visual quality, and special effects...but he is no story/acting director.

Nothing he said was wrong. Harrison Ford said the same thing about Lucas and those two are friends.

Just anothèr reason for using less green screen and more practical effects in the new trilogy. You heard that, JJ?

I just want to see an official apology from Lucasfilm or any collective of the staff or cast for sitting on their hands and allowing George Lucas' monster to devour itself like it did. I want to see more people come out and apologize for the prequels and say "We're sorry. We didn't act when we should have. We let all the power go to George's enormous head and watched as he destroyed the thing that brought him fame. Let us now regroup and rebuild. Star Wars can once again be awesome"

Lucas has always been a bad director, when he was doing the first Star Wars he regularly said to the actors on takes "Faster, and more intense", how you can work with that I do not know.

Stamp is awesome and we should be thankful that he doesn't go all Zod on us.

Old news! Heard this in 2000. Lucas' problem was the technology allowed him to ignore what was most important. We saw a classic in Star Wars (Ep 4) because of characters and all he ever saw and apparently still sees was patchwork glue & taped models, rather than brilliant FX. It's too bad. I hope JJ gives us something with heart.

I have loved STAR WARS since it first came out when I was 3 years old. STAR WARS is and always will be my number 1 interest outside of the wife and kids but with that being said Terrance Stamp is absolutely correct. Lucas may have initially given us the GFFA but he subsequently damaged it like a parent abuses their child. Instead of instilling values and integrity in it he simply put pretty clothes on it and assumed it would be successful on appearance alone.

Am I the only one who's getting a little tired of the "This person who was in this movie had a negative experience making it!" articles? It just seems like non-news to me.
