TERMINATOR: DARK FATE - Here's How Edward Furlong's John Connor Factors Into The Plot - SPOILERS

The news that Edward Furlong would be reprising his Judgement Day role for Terminator: Dark Fate was met with a lot of approval, but when it comes to John Connor, fans should really manage their expectations. In fact, how the character is utilized in this movie is flat-out going to piss some people off.

TERMINATOR: DARK FATE Review - An Exciting Return To Form For A Franchise That Badly Needed A Win

The film begins in 1998, with Sarah and John Connor attempting to live a relatively normal life in Guatemala. They may have succeeded in stopping Judgement Day, but it's revealed that Skynet sent more than one Terminator back to kill the future leader of the Resistance, and a rogue T-800 decides to complete his mission. John is executed right in front of Sarah, who is powerless to save her son.

Yes, that's the only time the character appears - and it's not even Edward Furlong in the role!

Despite reports that the actor was returning, Furlong is listed only as "John Connor reference" in the credits, with Aaron Kunitz as the voice of John and Jude Collie as the body double. Maybe he did appear initially before his scene was cut, but again, we can't imagine too many fans being happy about this.

Terminator: Dark Fate is out this weekend in The UK and Ireland, and is set to hit theaters in The US on November 1.

They turned John Conner into a Terminator in the last one which was bat crap crazy so this shouldn't be shocking.

People let's remember that John Connor was only supposed to become the all important figure if Judgment Day had actually happened but since they stopped it kinda makes sense that the story remains about Sarah since it started with her in the first place. Not the way I would have gone either but it is what it is. Not the way I would have gone either but it is what it is. Still watching it!

I admit this first scene had me worried, but once you accept what happens it is a very enjoyable movie. At the end of the day, Furlong was never going to return as Connor for any kind of substantial role, so this probably makes the most sense outside of recasting which would have pissed people off anyway.

@RorMachine - Or they could have included the character in a small, less kill-off-y role.

@Kyos - They could have, but then what? If you're not gonna kill him off then how do you explain why he doesn't stick around for the whole movie?

@RorMachine - He could've just settled down, leading a normal life. Skynet was defeated, there were no more Terminator related events for decades. No John Connor, last hope of humanity, anymore. Just John Connor, guy who'd experienced some weird shit in his teens and is now a halfway normal grown man, with a somewhat estranged, paranoid mother who couldn't let go of the idea that there might be another threat coming someday. Have Sarah call him, show us a glimpse of his life, and let Sarah decide not to drag him into the new mess.

Of course you'd need another solution for Arnie's presence in the movie, the best of which being to simply not include him this time.

@Kyos - That could have worked if they'd gone a different direction with the story (although it'd still be a bit of a stretch to believe that he'd just sit out a new threat), but his death does inform the plot in a major way.

Was Edward Furlong too busy at his Taco Bell job?
