The Star Wars saga has a history of utilizing some very strong villains, and fans are hoping to see Ben Mendelsohn (The Place Beyond the Pines, Bloodline) continue that tradition in Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In a new interview with Empire, the Aussie actor shared some new details on his character and how he was able to rise through the ranks of The Empire. Plus, even though Director Krennic and Darth Vader are on the same side, it sounds like they are far from bossom buddies.

"It's fair to say Lord Vader and he aren't friendly. Darth is very much about the Force. Krennic is force. Not really down with the whole mystical thing."

"Krennic does not come "from the aristocracy of the Empire, if you like. He is truly a man that has made his own way up the chain through his own abilities. His weapon, for instance, is a very old type of blaster, because he's an old warrior dude. He’s been put in charge of making this thing happen. And it's gonna get done!"

Rogue One Krennic

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers.

The movie opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016.

We all know he isn't gonna make it out. I guess when darth comes through the mist he's going to take his lighsaber out and cut his head off.

I want to see the movie but... WE KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN WHAT KIND OF SUSPENSE CAN WE HAVE????

@Craigferguson67 - Because, at least for me, it's less about the end result and more about the journey. We've never seen much in terms of the Rebellion's fight against the Empire (minus Rebels)...this film gives us a look at that, I find that interesting. Plus, we get a look at Vader at the height of his power.

I'm interested in seeing how Mads' character factors in. We know he didn't design the entire Death Star, as we see that there were already Geonosian schematics for it in place at the end of Episode III...I assume he plays a part in the superlaser's construction.

@MattBellissimo - If you're not one for spoilers, the Catalyst prequel goes really deep into what his role actually is. Since it's covered so much in the novel, my guess is that the film isn't really going to spend a lot of time explaining what his expertise is.

Ben Mendelson is a great actor (I'm mainly aware of him from Bloodline) though I wish his arms weren't crossed in that image. He comes off almost like he's insecure, despite all the strong-arms that surround him.
