Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now playing in most locations worldwide, and while initial box office tracking pointed to the Marvel Studios movie taking in as much as $90 million over the course of its opening weekend, our last update predicted a significantly lower $60M. Now, though, Deadline is reporting that the film will likely climb as high as $75M-$85M.
Accurate estimates are obviously difficult given the current climate, which is why we're seeing these fluctuations. However, after claiming the third highest opening day of the pandemic era with $29.6M (just behind F9‘s $29.9M), all signs are pointing to Shang-Chi's big-screen debut securing the biggest Labor Day opening weekend of all-time.
The latest Phase 4 adventure has received an overwhelmingly positive critical reception (it currently sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it's worth noting that critical acclaim didn't make much of a difference to The Suicide Squad's BO performance. Then again, the former has the advantage of a more family-friendly PG-13 rating, and since it won't be available to stream from home, fans will be forced to brave the theater if they want to see the Master of Martial Arts in action.
Will Shang-Chi turn out to be the movie that gets the box office back on track? We wouldn't bet against it!
