SHANG-CHI Looks Set To Exceed Box Office Expectations With $75M-$85M Labor Day Weekend

The last box office update predicted that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings would take in around $60 million over the course of its opening weekend, but it's now looking more like $75M-$85M!

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now playing in most locations worldwide, and while initial box office tracking pointed to the Marvel Studios movie taking in as much as $90 million over the course of its opening weekend, our last update predicted a significantly lower $60M. Now, though, Deadline is reporting that the film will likely climb as high as $75M-$85M.

Accurate estimates are obviously difficult given the current climate, which is why we're seeing these fluctuations. However, after claiming the third highest opening day of the pandemic era with $29.6M (just behind F9‘s $29.9M), all signs are pointing to Shang-Chi's big-screen debut securing the biggest Labor Day opening weekend of all-time.

The latest Phase 4 adventure has received an overwhelmingly positive critical reception (it currently sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it's worth noting that critical acclaim didn't make much of a difference to The Suicide Squad's BO performance. Then again, the former has the advantage of a more family-friendly PG-13 rating, and since it won't be available to stream from home, fans will be forced to brave the theater if they want to see the Master of Martial Arts in action.

Will Shang-Chi turn out to be the movie that gets the box office back on track? We wouldn't bet against it!

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers.

Have you guys been to see the film yet? If so, what did you think? Let us know in the usual place.

As Desus and Mero would say:

Didn't get to go last night but hoping to see it tonight. Haven't seen my timeline talking about a movie this much since 2019. Super happy for Simu and members of the Asian diaspora who have been lacking this representation since forever. Really feels like their having somewhat of a Black Panther moment with this movie which I assumed was never going take on that level of significance

Also, an added bonus of this doing so well is it lessens the chance that Marvel and Sony are going to push back Eternals and Spider-Man NWH. Those are consequences that shouldn't be placed on *this* movie's shoulders, but if it gets an extra win tangentially, that's good news for everybody

Ya The Suicide Squad didn’t really stand a chance and certainly didn’t have the same hand Shang Chi is getting with a pure theatrical release. Putting that movie on HBO Max was a disastrous move and during the pandy-wandy ????? Just take the film out in the backyard and shoot it in the head, put it out of its misery. Shang Chi deserves all the money it was awesome. It wasn’t as great as Gunn’s TSS by any means, I personally wouldn’t even put it in the same conversation but it’s an AWESOME fantasy epic. With so many fantastic surprises. Must see movie. Awesome combat. Awesome new characters too! Gives me hope for a DBZ movie someday. A good one.
