SPAWN Creator Todd McFarlane Open To Releasing Upcoming Movie Via Streaming Services Like Netflix

Todd McFarlane wants everybody to experience Spawn, even if that means forgoing a traditional theatrical release in favor of a streaming service like Netflix or even some other distribution model.

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has taken notice of the growing popularity of streaming services like Netflix and is open to the possibility of bringing the property to one of them. With production on the upcoming Spawn reboot still months away, the writer, producer, and director recently sat down with Comicbook.com and discussed a potential digital future for the property.

"Yes to all of the above," McFarlane told the site when asked if he would sell his Spawn property to a streaming service like Netflix. "I think the world’s changing in front of our very eyes in how we’re going to consume not only entertainment but even movies."

McFarlane speculated "there might be a day when you hit a button and Star Wars is on your computer and you won’t have to go to the theatre."

Funny enough, that day may be sooner rather than later as Disney already has plans to launch a streaming service and already has plans to host multiple original Star Wars projects, including The Mandalorian live-action television series that's being written and executive produced by Jon Favreau.

At the end of the day, McFarlane said his goal is for people to see his movies, regardless of how they consume it. "I want human beings to see it," he said. "Whatever that device is, whatever that delivery mechanism is, I’m not going to get married to a distribution model that may not be as relevant or as efficient because that’s how you used to do it. I’ll talk to all of them.”

With an admittedly low budget, releasing Spawn on a streaming service like Netflix might not be such a terrible option. The upcoming reboot, which will mark McFarlane's film directorial debut, is being produced by Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, a studio that has excelled in with small-budget films, including the incredibly successful horror films Get Out and Split. With production expected to begin in June 2019 and no release date set, there's plenty of time for McFarlane and Blum to discuss distribution models.

Interesting that this is now a considered concept in terms of how would you make a profit from it?

Also, I didn’t mind that Annihilation was released via Netflix outside the U.S as I don’t think I would have seen it at the cinema. I thoroughly enjoyed it though.

You would think after Venom that would boost interest in this film.

@Forthas

Spawn has never been as well known/popular as Venom.

@regularmovieguy - Well Spawn had a movie before Venom...unless you count Spiderman 3.

@Forthas

I wouldn’t gauge that really. There’s a lot of factors that go into making a movie.

@Forthas - Right but that movie was done in the 90s, at the height of his popularity. And that didn’t make that big a profit even then. The character just hasn’t been relevant since.

@Forthas - Counting Spider-Man 3 doesn't change anything. The Spawn movie came out way before that.

But I'm not sure why the Venom movie would boost interest in a Spawn film. The two characters aren't really anything alike aside from having living costumes.

@CorndogBurglar - Venom is a dark ant-hero that is not as well known as say Spiderman or even Thor...

That is the same for Spawn.
Matador

@Forthas - But both set in different universes and like the brand Venom has a Marvel (Nike) symbol that sales. Spawn has nothing but Todd MacFarlane name attached to it just like how IMAGE comics is not as relevant as they use to be.

If Spawn was thrown around it would need a year of publicity to get people interested in him again. The one rumor for Spawn that we nearly got was they had planned on him to have shown up in Injustice 2.

And funny he was by passed for Hellboy & TMNT cool none the less.

@DTor91 - Ant Man wasn’t exactly relevant either, but I suppose the Marvel engine behind it put it over the top.

Deadpool wasn’t relevant before release, and the X-Men franchise had a mixed following at best at that time, but the marketing (**bites lower lip** oooooh the marketing) really put it over the top.

Maybe with the right marketing people can get enthusiastic about Spawn as well.

Keep the budget low, make it R-rated. It should do fine in theaters. It's not like it has a lot to live up to.

I see where he is coming from, but I'm a traditional guy. I wanna see these larger than life characters in the theater. So I would vote theatrical release.

I feel bad that Mcfarlene cant just find a way to get this done without sounding slightly desperate.

I loved the comic and really hope whatever he does comes out good.
