There's incredible hype surrounding Todd McFarlane's
Spawn reboot and now we have some news that'll surely make fans of the franchise giggle with excitement. McFarlane has announced that he will be collaborating with legendary special effects artist Greg Nicotero on the upcoming movie. Nicotero - an award-winning executive producer, director, and make-up special effects creator on AMC's
The Walking Dead - and his company, KNB EFX, will help create the new design for
Spawn in the upcoming film.
“I'm a long-time fan of Greg’s work and the projects his company, KNB have done throughout the years,” said McFarlane, who worked alongside Nicotero on the 1997
Spawn movie.
“Working with him once again, to re-invent the Spawn 'look' so it will match the supernatural theme in the movie, is going to be a fun process.”
With a small budget, McFarlane has previously spoken about his desire for more practical effects, rather than heavy CGI for the reboot. This is what led him to work with Nicotero and KNB once again. Speaking exclusively to ComicBook.com, McFarlane elaborated:
"When I conceived of the story to start with, I never really thought of it as big special effects extravaganza because I knew we weren't going to have the budget for it. So I knew I was going to rely heavily on practical makeup and costuming, and one of the places that kept popping up was my good pal Greg Nicotero on his KNB Group. And he's obviously done a tremendous amount of work on dozens and dozens of movies. The sort of serendipitous part of it is that Greg was there at the beginning 20 years ago for the original Spawn movie."
With
Jamie Foxx tapped to play the titular antihero and
Jeremy Renner as "Twitch" Williams, the addition of Nicotero adds even more excitement to the film. Nicotero boasts quite an impressive resume, which includes work on
The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Preacher, and
Sin City.
Spawn will mark McFarlane's film directorial debut. He's partnering with Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, a studio that has excelled in with small-budget films, including the incredibly successful horror films
Get Out and
Split.
Spawn does not yet have a production start or release date, though McFarlane is hoping to begin production by early 2019. Are you excited for the upcoming reboot?
