SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Moves To Summer 2023; MADAME WEB Sets Official Release Date

More release date changes to report tonight, this time from Sony Pictures - and it's safe to say fans of Miles Morales' animated adventures are going to be disappointed.

Highly anticipated sequel Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Part 1 has now been moved from October 7, 2022 to June 2, 2023, while Part 2 won't swing into theaters until March 29, 2024. The studio has also officially dated another SPUMC movie, with Madame Web set to debut on July 7, 2023.

Specific plot details are still under wraps, but the follow-up has been confirmed to feature multiple new incarnations of the wall-crawling hero. Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, and SP//dr are expected to return, and the villain is rumored to be Johnathon Ohnn, AKA Spot. Insecure star Issa Rae will play Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman.

Joaquim Dos Santos (Voltron: Legendary Defender; The Legend of Korra), Kemp Powers (Soul), and Justin K. Thompson will direct. Phil Lord and Chris Miller penned the script along with David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Lord and Miller will also produce with Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg.

Madame Web will star Dakota Johnson as the title character, with Euphoria breakout Sydney Sweeney on board in an undisclosed role. S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) will direct from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

No reason was given for these delays, but it's entirely possible Sony execs are simply regrouping and giving themselves time to rethink their strategy after the critical and commercial reaction to Morbius.

Yup, they got scared shitless after the Morbius disaster.

And Madame Web is not starting production until they see Kraven's numbers.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I don’t think they can wait that long. madame Web is going to flop HARD.

@Shivermetimbers - It cant flop if it doesnt get made

Jokes aside, I think Kraven will more than likely bomb unless the movie is really good, the reviews are stellar, and the word of mouth is great.

I still think Morbius was originally a decent movie, but they had to reshot the entire thing after Kevin Feige kicked them out of his house.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Kraven should be a layup, but leave it to SONY to turn this into a 1995 💣. Open him up to a lion hunt in the first act, have him run into Vermin on the hunt for Venom in the 2nd act, then have Venom ambush him in the 3rd act. Make him go Predator Arnold Swartz to evade escape and inevitably come up with an acoustic fire trap to capture Brock in the end. Aka: Swish.

Yeah…after Morbius I’d be shocked if Madam Webb goes into production ever. Sh*t universe.

@MrDandy - The whole thing is on hold until Kraven's release...and that production is still on because it already started before Morbius came out, and I wouldnt be surprised if it got big budget cuts.

Across the Spider-verse was my most anticipated movie of the year so hearing this news sucks. At least this gives the animators plenty of time to fine-tune the movie.

I don’t care for Madame Web or Kraven at all. I didn’t see Morbius but everything I’ve heard makes it sound like Sony has no plan for their own universe.

I’m guessing we’ll see MCU Spider-Man 4 in 2024 or 2025 then.

@MovieMonster - I wouldnt hold my breath about that either, Tom Holland still hasnt sign a new contract.
But Sony HAS to release a Spiderman movie by 2026, or they lose the rights.

@TheHumanSpider2 - arent Morbius, Kraven, Madame Webb and Venom Spider-Man Movies?

eagc1995 - 4/21/2022, 11:24 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - As long they keep releasing spin offs, they have nothing to worry about
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 4/21/2022, 12:04 PM
@eagc1995 - The spin-offs count???
eagc1995
eagc1995 - 4/21/2022, 2:34 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Yes, just as long they keep making movies based on Spider-Man characters, that will extend the rights stay at Sony, Sony could basically stop making films about Spidey himself, but still keep the rights with just the spin-offs. Right now any chances of rights reverting to Marvel are pretty non-existent unless all future Spider-Man films including animated make Morbius numbers.

Heck Fox was planning on focusing on FF spin off projects instead of mainline FF films just to keep the rights
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 4/21/2022, 2:48 PM
@eagc1995 - They are never letting those rights go back.
But I didnt know any Spiderman related IP counted...I wonder how much Avi Arad paid for the rights, the ammount was never told, but was enough to save Marvel from bankrupcy...
eagc1995
eagc1995 - 4/21/2022, 2:55 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Technically it was Avi who sold them to Sony, rather than someone selling them to Avi, as Avi was one of the higher ups at Marvel alongside Perlmutter at the time the rights were sold
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 4/21/2022, 6:32 PM
@eagc1995 - But Avi bought them in the first place (basically to sell toys, and then he started producing content to promote said toys, like the 1994 animated series), are you saying Avi bought the rights BEFORE he joined Sony Pictures?
eagc1995
eagc1995 - 4/21/2022, 10:02 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - They didnt had the rights to Spider-Man films around the time Avi and Ike bought Marvel, James Cameron already had his hands on Spider-Man at that time, they reverted back to Marvel in 98, followed by Avi and Ike later selling the rights to Sony in 99

Moving it from one busy time of year to another busy time

So the movie’s box office shouldnt be effected one way or another. Guessing its being delayed because of delays in production

Madame Web…why?

Like at least people know Morbius and Kraven and are known as cool characters

Does anyone know Madame Web for anything othet than being the old lady who randomly showed up once in a while during the 90’s spiderman cartoon and just took peter places

I'd argue Spider-Verse's delay was more likely that there's some negotiation holdup between Sony, Disney/Marvel, and Toei.

Madame Web? Totally blowback from Morbius.

maybe if they would've put their money and effort into making something people actually want instead of something like Morbius they wouldn't be in this situation.
I for one welcome it though, animation is hard to do on a tight schedule, time can only be better for the film.
