Kevin Feige Talks SPIDER-MAN's Role In CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, MCU Future, And More

Kevin Feige has spilled the beans on all things Spider-Man in a recent interview, touching on bringing the character back to the MCU, what they would have done if they couldn't, how he fits into Civil War, and why that movie still very much belongs to Captain America...

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige took part in a Q&A this week to promote the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the subject of Spider-Man and his role in next year's Captain America: Civil War inevitably came up. Talking about the historic deal between Marvel and Sony, he said: "Making that agreement ... was great, and was really amazing, and on a personal level making these movies, it means a lot because I think we can do great things with Spider-Man. I think Spider-man can serve great purpose in our universe and that's where he belongs. That was what was unique about him in the comics was not that he was the only superhero in the world; it's that he was a totally different kind of superhero when compared against all the other ones in the Marvel universe at the time." If that doesn't get you excited for this movie, then what will?

After mentioning that "it's not about when you show up, it's about what you do once you're there" in regards to where Spider-Man has been up until now, Feige explained that while they always wanted to bring Peter Parker back into the fold, they had plans just in case that wasn't possible. "This has been a dream of ours for a long time,. We always had contingency plans, which we always do anyway. Are we going to be able to make another deal with this actor? If so, we're going to do this; if not, we're going to do this. If we get the rights to a certain character, that's great; we're going to do this. If not, we're going to do this. We always sort of operate under those various alternate timelines available and ready to shift if something happens." The Marvel boss also went on to point out that, "the most important thing as a standalone is relaunching Spider-Man in his own standalone movie with his own storylines that fits into this universe. That is job number one for us. ... The connectivity is great, but it doesn't drive the train."

However, despite the fact that Tom Holland's Spider-Man is going to be introduced in Captain America: Civil War next year, Feige was quick to reiterate the fact that it's still very much going to be both Steve's story and a follow-up to the events of The Winter Solider. "There were a lot of characters in The Winter Soldier, but it felt like a very singular and relatively simple thriller. Civil War follows in that same way," Feige explained. "I think that's something [directors Joe and Anthony Russo] pride themselves on, and our screenwriters Chris Markus and Steve McFeely are excellent at giving each character just enough. They're not full arcs for everybody; it's just enough that their presence is felt and important, but that the very clear single story that is being told is being served at all times." What do you guys think about these comments from Kevin Feige?

Directions the NEW take on Spider-Man could take...

His first solo movie will no doubt be quite comedic with Peter being just a kid. I think Mysterio would fit the bill quite well, maybe with Scorpion as a side villain, which would also be a cool way of setting up Mac Gargan for Venom.

For a darker second movie a team-up with Daredevil vs the Kingpin would be awesome but maybe even a team-up with Blade vs Morbius?!? Snipes is talking to Marvel apparently...

I have no doubt that Marvel is going to want to introduce Norman Osborn for a key role in setting up the Thunderbolts and leading to Avengers: Secret Invasion, Dark Reign for after Infinity WAR. Matthew Maconaghy would be a great Norman Osborn!

Also I don't think that Sinister Six is dead by any means and we may still see a Venom spin-off movie and a Maximum Carnage movie eventually.

MCU Spidey:
2016 - Civil WAR
2017 - Spectacular Spider-Man (Mysterio)
2018 - Infinity WAR pt.1
2019 - Infinity WAR pt.2
2019 - Crime & Punishment (Spidey, DareDevil, Black Cat, Kingpin, Punisher, Bullseye)
2020 - Thunderbolts (Introducing Norman Osborn)
2021 - Sinister Six ( Hobgoblin, Doc Ock, Vulture, Kraven, Venom, Mysterio)
2022 - Secret Invasion (Skrulls)
2023 - Dark Reign (Thunderbolts vs Secret Avengers)
2023 - Venom
2024 - Maximum Carnage (Venom, Carnage, Jackal, Kaine, Scarlet Spider, Miles Morales, death of Peter Parker?)
2026 - Spider-Man Returns (Miles)

I never had any doubt it was still Steve's story. I'm glad. I think Feige is right: Winter Soldier had a bevy of characters, but it never felt like anyone was underdeveloped. Each supporting character got just enough screen time and dialogue to establish themselves.

At the end of the day, it's all about CAPO

These three together on screen for the first time are what im really excited for

@Lockjaw if that timeline came true I think I may explode with happiness. Pretty much bang on what I want to see from Spidey.

I want to see what the Russos do for what they did with cap so they can up what shane black did with iron man's suits and creativity.

Cool stuff. Really looking forward to Civil War. I can't wait to see how the Russos juggle everything going on in this movie, but the more I hear, the more I believe in them. I they knock this one out of the park, then the Captain America trilogy will personally be my favorite CBM trilogy. Getting excited for Civil War!!

@IronRuhail I think the Russos talent for big action will make iron man look the dopest he's ever looked on film. I think they can add some real cool shit for tony.

Its going to be insane having a guy with an organic suit, a super soldier and a teenage wonder duke it out on the screen all at once.

Civil war will be a game changer in my opinion. It's the begining of marvel's biggest Phase yet. Each film has to be amazing. MCU has been building to this phase since day one. It's the end of trilogies for Cap and Thor and the begining of BP, Cap Marvel's and Doc Strange's MCU journeys. It's inifinty war finally arriving too. This Phase is the culmination of everything. It has to be damn near perfect.

That's because all the extra character in the Winter Solider were treated as side character that were used to service the main storyline(Cap's Journey). The sad thing about age of Ultron was that there was no main story. Each character was treated as main character with there own independent stories that had nothing to do with each other's story or the main (none existent) story.

Still would've rather had a TASM 3, but excited nonetheless for this to happen, too.

"the most important thing as a standalone is relaunching Spider-Man in his own standalone movie with his own storylines that fits into this universe."

So he's basically shooting down those rumors of RDJ in the Spider-Man movie, right?

Who's scoop was that? Eh, maybe?

So why did you hire the shitty writers who never wrote anything good & more recently wrote The Vacation Feige?

This scene was a bit dumb since Batroc had plenty of time to side step that hit.

I know I sound like a broken record but to me, writers are as important to a film as the director.

Hell after I was meh on MOS, at SDCC 2013 when Batman/Superman was announced it was said Goyer & Snyder would write the story to the film with Goyer doing the script and I was so damn worried. I knew the film wouldn't be great if those 2 wrote it.

Then Affleck was cast as Batman and I knew there was no way the film would be shotty. After saying no to comic book movies for years after Daredevil, in the same year he won Oscar for best film there was no way Ben would throw his career away playing Batman if the script wasn't good. Which Ben saw and told Snyder drop Goyer and let's let Terrio write it.

Point is good writers matter & I'm not all that confident in these writers. Watts I'm slightly mixed. Cop Car was good but still he's young. Molding his craft and hasn't made his own style yet.

I think that people are right about the weight that this film carries. It will introduce a whole new MCU that will end with Infinity War. And THAT might just end the MCU we know. We are something like 12 movies deep. And AOU showed that there is already way too much mythology to this universe than can be explained in one movie (if you have seen the deleted scenes, you know what I'm saying).
