MORBIUS: Sony Pictures May Have Removed Spider-Man Reference From The Movie's Baffling Mid-Credits Scene

Morbius boasts two of the worst post-credits scenes we've ever witnessed, but it's now said that the mention of Spider-Man has been entirely removed from cuts of the Marvel movie in theaters. Check it out!

In Morbius' first post-credits scene, Adrian Toomes finds himself transported from the MCU to Sony's Marvel Universe in a baffling sequence that was clearly meant to capitalise on the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The prevailing theory is that the villain would have originally been part of this world with no explanation after Sony's deal to share Spidey with Disney concluded, but reshoots led to The Vulture being dragged into another reality (which actually makes zero sense).

If we're lucky, an incursion might bring an end to that universe, but in a second stinger, we saw Adrian suited up and attempting to recruit Michael Morbius to a seemingly heroic Sinister Six. He briefly mentioned believing Spider-Man might be responsible for his arrival in a different reality, and while the Living Vampire greeted this reveal with a blank stair, the reference may have been cut altogether.

According to @DRMovieNews1, prints of Morbius in his local theater have scrapped that Spider-Man mention. Now, all eyes will be on the upcoming Digital release to see if that's the case there as well, but don't be surprised if it does disappear as Sony looks to avoid tainting the web-slinger's successful MCU franchise with this rival Marvel Universe. It's also likely that plans for Tom Holland's Peter Parker to enter this corner of the Spider-Verse have been blissfully scrapped in recent months.

Whatever the case might be, both the response to Morbius and the backlash aimed at these post-credits scenes are bound to have led to Sony going back to the drawing board with its grand plan.

Take a look at the Tweet below along with our interview with Morbius star Al Madrigal.

My headcanon is Morbius was a fever dream Toomes had in his jailcell. The whole movie, including the post credit scene. He's still in the MCU.

Sony just can’t get it right. They need to stop trying.

Maybe they're gonna tie this to Madame Web instead? Think it would be interesting if they start to connect the movies a little more.

Kraven can be tied to Madame Web, maybe wanting revenge on Madame Web because she killed Ana and Sasha Kravinoff, and could make Vulture and Morbius part of the Wild Pack. Instead of Nick Fury, this franchise can use The Foreigner or Silver Sable.

Sony is sitting on top of a gold mine but doesn't know what to do with it. Morbius, Venom, Kraven... They are all great characters, with a lot of potential, but you need to understand what makes them great in the first place in order to make a movie.

A "heroic" "Sinister" six.😂🤣 Keaton was likely contractually obligated to reprise his role. But I really hope he doesn't continue in the Sonyverse. It cheapens his return as Batman. In general, I really don't want actors doing both Marvel and DC. Especially at the same time.

They should have removed the other 90 minutes of the movie along with it.

It takes talent and skill to write something that even the most obsessed and dedicated comic book readers can't wrap their minds around.

Sometimes I feel bad for WB having to try to manage the DC film slate because most people don't like the Snyderverse, but the most vocal fanbase they have are obsessed with it. That's a genuinely tough position to be in. Not just people on twitter, but even their own actors and Snyder himself just refused to let it die so the studio could move on. Every instinct in every studio executive is to try to marry these two incompatible groups to maximize profits, but the Snyder stuff is just poison to the mainstream appeal of the franchise. It's tough.

And then you see Sony making as many weird self-destructive decisions and compromises as WB has (and Fox was more or less caught up in a similar snarl by the end) and I don't really see how they're so bad at their job. There's no split in public opinion about Spider-Man: basically everyone wants to see Holland's Spidey doing MCU stuff, and they clearly don't care about Spidey's villains being reframed as anti-heroes and don't want to see some big SPUMCK crossover.

I get they want to make money with the assets they've got, but they're trying to be their own lesser-MCU, and they just can't be. Even the MCU is barely holding the MCU together. How can a studio that made a movie that understands the weight of the legacy of Spider-Man so well, also completely misunderstand the message of how to live in that shadow without being overshadowed yourself?

@Spock0Clock - It sure would make sense for them to give up on the live action nonsense they've been putting out. Meanwhile, they've got ITSV which is wildly successful. We can never know what's happening behind closed doors but from a business perspective AND an audience perspective the path forward couldn't be more clear.

Could it be they're really just that stubborn and desperate to get that MCU success? I've never seen a studio with such collective insecurity to keep trying this hard and continually failing so badly. Even Fox eventually said fvck it, and focused on their lane.

Avi Arad + An F-list Swedish film director + Two writers of terrible movies + No one wanted a Morbius movie + No one wants to see Jared Leto in a movie + Sony Pictures = Sh!t.
