MCU Vet Samuel L. Jackson Criticizes Academy For Snubbing SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME At The Oscars

Samuel L. Jackson has starred in all manner of movies throughout the course of his incredible career, and he's now criticized the Academy for its apparent inability to honor superhero movies at the Oscars.

The Academy's decision to overlook Spider-Man: No Way Home in the "Best Picture" race at this year's Oscars hasn't gone down well, and a superfluous "Oscars Fan Favorite" Twitter poll has done little to make amends. Now, Samuel L. Jackson - who starred in 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home - has expressed his frustration with the threequel being snubbed.

"They should have an Oscar for the most popular movie," he said when asked about Spider-Man: No Way Home being overlooked despite critical acclaim and a $1.8 billion box office haul. "Because that’s what the business is about. It did what movies did forever - it got people to a big dark room."

"All movies are valid. Some go to the cinema to be moved dearly. Some like superheroes." Jackson continued. "If somebody has more butts on seats it just means your audience is not as broad. There are people who have had successful careers but nobody can recite one line of their parts. I’m the guy who says shit that’s on a t-shirt."

Jackson was nominated for his role in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, but lost out to Ed Wood star Martin Landau. Reflecting on this, the Secret Invasion star said, "[Maybe] I should have won one. But Oscars don’t move the comma on your cheque - it’s about getting asses in seats and I’ve done a good job of doing that."

Unfortunately, there's no sign of the Academy changing its attitude towards superhero movies, which is no great surprise when most of its members have publicly criticised the genre or outright despise it! As for Jackson, he's a bona fide icon, and hasn't needed an Oscar on his shelf to cement that fact.

Spider-Man: No Way Home releases on Digital on March 22 and physical platforms on April 12.

Loved it but its not that type of movie

If box office success means a movie deserves an oscar, then Michael Bay would have several

Do you really want to give Michael Bay an oscar

@dracula - I don’t think the Oscars should be a “type” of film… I personally thought No Way Home was a brilliantly crafted film, sure it had cliches in popular storytelling but that shouldn’t take away from the emotion and thrill of the film as a whole. Well directed, well acted, great music.. and it made a big impact in pop culture… But then again I thought The Dark Knight, Infinity War, Endgame and a couple more should have been nominated too so I might be a little biased when it comes to nominating Comic Book Films lol.

The whole conversation a lot of great filmmakers are having about these type of films having no artistic value and just purely theme park ride films is complete nonsense to me. I’ve never dropped a tear on a ride 😂 but this could be a nonstop conversation so I’ll just stop.

@dracula - But why does Don't Look Up deserve a Best Picture nomination over NWH? NWH is better rated by both critics and the public and basically restored faith in the movie-going experience (we know that the Academy has nominated movies because of "impact" before)... Just because it has the right names on the poster?

@JohnCastillo - Couldn't agree more. And if we are completely honest, many Oscar movies rehash the same formula over and over again too.

Movie was awesome, but as Oscar contender I'm not feeling it. They already have programs like MTV Movie Awards for popularity anyway.

@ModHaterSLADE - I can totally see this plotless but "fun" movie winning this!

I don't understand why people even want Spider-Man to win an Oscar. It is meaningless haha

@TheManWithoutFear - We get an article like this once a week and people still saying the same “who cares”, “it’s meaningless” comments. They’re clearly not meaningless to people who actually work on films, not meaningless to Samuel L Jackson. Their opinions obviously are more valid than those of fans.

I guess i just fundamentally disagree with this comment.

People need get a grip, sure it was a fun film and a lot of people loved it. It’s not exactly high art though is it? I mean half of the film, and I know it was probably due to COVID, looks like it was filmed in a cupboard.

No one outside of Hollywood gives a [frick] about the Oscars anyway. Those clowns are so out of touch with what the general populous values that the awards have become nothing but a giant circle-jerk of literal made up clout that no one outside of the industry even values anymore. So really, what is the point?

Look Mr. Feige. It`s simple: You want an Oscar? Let them sing and dance more in your movies. Let Hulk wrestle with his "female Side" or something.
Why?
Check out the winners of the last two decades (and who sits in the jury).
Nuff said.

...they tried exactly what you're suggesting Jackson. It's called the popular movie category. And people hated it.

Like seriously, the Oscar's are full of legitimate problems like how the requirements to actually be a member has nothing to do with film experience and members openly admit to not seeing all the movies. I have no idea why no way home is the hill we're dying on when it comes to problems with the academy.

There's no need for a "most popular movie" award because there's no personal opinion there. The existence of nominees contradicts the definition. The most popular movie is the one that makes most money, so the that's enough of an award in itself.
If you're gonna choose a winner from the top 5 highest grossing movies for example, well the winner might not be the most popular movie.

No Sam, that is not what the Oscars are about, they are about the best movies, not the most popular ones.
Transformers, Fast and Furious, and Twlight were never nominated.

You should know what is actually being "snubed", since, well, you were.

This stupidity is the reason why even the movie is in 8th place in the category the Academy invented just to force an Oscar on this movie.
