SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star J.K. Simmons Talks "Comic Relief" Role In The Upcoming Threequel

Spider-Man: No Way Home star J.K. Simmons talks about what we can expect from him as J. Jonah Jameson in the threequel, while revealing why he wouldn't consider any sort of solo project for the character.

At the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, J.K. Simmons reprised the role of J. Jonah Jameson to reveal the wall-crawler's secret identity as Peter Parker to the entire world. Thanks to doctored footage created by Mysterio, Spidey was also framed as a murderer, and fans are understandably excited to see more of the MCU's JJJ in Spider-Man: No Way Home next month.

We've caught a glimpse of him in the recent trailer and TV spots seemingly expressing his shock at seeing Electro, Sandman, and The Lizard in action, but Jonah's role beyond that is a mystery.

Talking to Happy Sad Confused's Josh Horowitz, Simmons shed some light on his approach to the character and how he perceives this Jonah Variant. "You know what, I think it's a slightly different version. Certainly, from the creators of the current iteration of the story, it's a very different character," the actor explained. "To me, it's a slightly different character. It's the same blowhard; the same guy with less hair. Honestly, I kinda wish he had the same hair."

Detailing the quick turnaround that followed his talks with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures prior to shooting his Spider-Man: Far From Home scene a day and a half later, Simmons added: "The most important thing is that he's still the same blowhard and he does have the same damn moustache and cigar, at least." As for Spider-Man: No Way Home, he said, "As is appropriate for that character, he's a little comic relief thing that gets sprinkled lightly into the movie."

However, despite the popularity of this J. Jonah Jameson, one thing Simmons also made clear is that he thinks the character works best in a supporting role. "After the first two with Sam [Raimi], friends and people in the business were like, 'They should do a movie about J. Jonah Jameson' and I was always like, 'No, no, no.'"

We're hoping Spider-Man and JJJ get to cross paths in the upcoming Marvel Studios threequel, because it's always fun to see the Daily Bugle blowhard get his comeuppance at the web-slinger's hands.

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in U.S. on December 17 and in the UK on December 15.

I think it was @Spock0Clock that brought up how every version of Jonah in the multiverse should be defined by their haircut (Maguire's has the crew cut, Holland's got a halo, Spider-Punk Jameson would have a mohawk, etc) and I subscribe to that idea fully.

Kinda off topic, but (surprise, surprise), a new leak for NWH dropped, and it's about the post credits scene. And apparently... It's gonna be Ralph Bohner bad.

If true, I am not happy.

Who the hell asked for a JJJ movie? I’m excited to see what he gets himself into in this sequel. I wonder if he’s a variant or not.

This sequel has a lot to juggle but I’m optimistic about this one.

Kinda wish he was the Gordon to Keaton's Batman, so that when he meets or sees the Vulture he could give an ''I know you from somewhere'' remark

They should definitely not do a movie about J. Jonah Jameson. But if it's starring J.K. Simmons' version of the character? Yes. Yes, make that movie.
