Andrew Garfield Looks Back On THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Movies As Being "Like A Prison"

Andrew Garfield continues to reveal more about his tenure as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man movies, & now he reflects on the challenges of making cookie cutter movies which appeal to everyone & why the whole experience made him feel like he was imprisoned.

Despite being careful not to talk too much about the behind the scenes issues which plagued both of The Amazing Spider-Man movies, Andrew Garfield continues to reflect on his experience working on those movies, and it really doesn't sound good. In a recent interview with The Playlist to discuss 99 Homes, the British actor discussed the challenges which come with making a movie studio bosses want to ensure has mass appeal. "The pressure to get it right, to please everyone… it's not going to happen...You end up pleasing no one, or everyone just a little bit. Like, ‘Eh, that was good.’ [The films are] mass-marketed, like ‘We want 50-year-old white men to love it, gay teenagers to love it, bigot homophobes in Middle America to love it, 11-year-old girls to love it.’ That's canning Coke."

That a very honest and damning way to talk about the movies, and Garfield went on to share his feelings about being freed after he was unceremoniously dropped from the franchise and replaced by Tom Holland in the Marvel Studios reboot. "So that aspect of it was a bummer," he continued. "Especially for the group of us trying to infuse it with soul, trying to make it unique, something that was worth the price of entry. It was about authenticity, flavor, and truth, but at the same time, I understand people want to make a lot of money, and they're going to spend a lot of money so the playpen can be as big as it was. I can't live that way; it sounds like a prison, to be honest, living within those expectations." Who wants to bet that those "people" he's talking about were producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach?

However, don't expect the actor to now shy away from blockbusters or even the superhero genre. "With a film like ["The Amazing Spider-Man"], there's so much projection and expectation that is inherent in taking on a story and character like that. I was well up for the challenge, and I still am. I'm not going to shy away from something that a lot of people are going to see. [frick] it, bring it on, life's short." Chris Evans played Captain America after starring as The Human Torch and Ben Affleck was Daredevil long before he was Batman, so who knows what could be next for Garfield! I'd say he's deserving of another chance though. What do you think? Let us know below.

Its mind boggling that some of you hate this guy so much. He made a movie some of you didn't like. [frick] off, hes a good actor with his life ahead of him. There have obviously been worse CBMs, and there have obviously been better. We now have Fantastic Four to remind some of you shits what a terrible CBM is

Wow, he's probably getting real sick and tired of all these spider-man questions.

He should just go ahead and write a tell all book...

Damn, this guy seriously took the failure of both of these movies personally. Good for him. He's showing us the human perspective of things that most of us fanboys don't even bother to consider. It's awesome to see him tell it like it is and refuse to sugarcoat things...but still restrain himself from pulling a Trank and throw everyone and everything involved under the bus.

It sucks this has to happen to someone as genuinely passionate and driven as Garfield, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't glad that things turned out the way they did so Spidey could finally play in the MCU.

Andrew Garfield is one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet, I feel for what he was put through by Sony. I definitely think he could be a great movie Ted Kord for DC when they around to him.

I'm sure these words are going to piss off some Sony exec somewhere, but it doesn't seem like Garfield really cares about that anymore ... you gotta appreciate his honesty though.

That's the breaks.

TASM2 is still the worst CBM of all time. Worse that Fant4stic.

TASM2 is so bad less than a year after its release, Sony agreed to share the rights with Marvel. A year before they had 100% off Spidey's rights, now they have 50%.

Name me a film that's so bad, a studio willingly gives up half the rights after putting out a film less than a year earlier?

He seems like the kind of guy who'd thrive in smaller indie films instead of these giant blockbusters...

I love how even Garfield is now shitting on TASM films. Makes my job a lot easier. Defenders of the series will be grasping at straws to defend it now.

Andrew this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

@LEVITIKUZ Dude, come on. His sequel was bad, but it was better than almost all of the X-Films, any of the FF4 flicks, better than Thor2 and IronMan2-3. Those were just painful to watch

The Incredible Hulk

marvel put out a movie, hasn't put out a sequel, holds only half the rights with Universal. No solo coming soon.

@WakandasSoul

By Levi's logic it is, and thats my point. Just because Sony didn't make enough money to warrant a sequel and now shares the rights doesn't make TASM2 "the worst CBM ever"

I don't see where your going.

Before TIH, Universal & Marvel owned Hulks rights. Currently both still hold Hulk's rights.

Before TASM2, Sony owned Spidey's rights alone. Now they gave up half the rights for free to Marvel.
