Another Spider-Man Musical Is Coming To New York

As Julie Taymor's Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark struggles to do anything right fans have been able to sit back and watch as the disaster unfolds on the much hated musical. So what do you do when a much hated concept for a musical doesn't work out? Why you make a second one of course...

Julie Taymor's idea for a musical based of the popular comic character Spider-Man was laughed at since day one. So after recasting, delays, and technical problems things still are not looking good for the fan hated and critically panned musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark that is still struggling to meet its March 15th opening.

Justin Morgan an improv comedian and composer has taken it upon himself to make his own Spider-Man musical that will also repsect the comics. Morgan will be opening his musical on March 14th, just a day before Turn Off The Dark opens (hopefully...Or not? Who Cares?). Here is what Morgan had to say about making his own wall crawling musical just before Taymor's:

“Our goal isn’t to tear down Julie Taymor or parody her production,” Mr. Moran said in a telephone interview on Tuesday morning. “Our goal is to do what she should have done in the first place, and that’s just make a really good musical.”

Morgan also threw in his two cents on what he thinks went wrong with Turn Off The Dark:

“I was like, of course it’s going to fail,” said Mr. Moran, whose lyrics for “Pope! The Musical” won an excellence award at the 2010 Fringe Festival. “They’re doing it all wrong. They’re spending all this money on all the wrong things.”

The currently titled Spidey Project (working title) will hit Broadway March 14th.

“Our goal is to do what she should have done in the first place, and that’s just make a really good musical.”

Actually, what she should have done was not make it in the first place.

Doing another play, something so redundant, just to compete with a release date and make a buck in the process. The capacity of the bastards, huh?

Rebooting a Broadway musical that hasn't even come out yet. Another step down for comic books in general...

This isn't going to be on Broadway, lol. It's just an improv comedian trying to make a point that he can do a better show on no budget than Julie Taymor can with millions of dollars. And they don't reboot Broadway musicals. They revive old shows, and they are often quite good. Here's more information on the Spidey Project if you're interested:

Can somebody please fill me in just so I know I'm understanding this. They made an expensive Spider-man musical that failed miserabley and now, an IMPROV COMEDIAN is going to release a Spider-man musical too, to show them how it's done? My mind is completely blown. How did he manage to get something like this together to be released in a matter of weeks? It is sure to be awflul. Who is footing the bill for these people. That money can spent on something productive.

And it's not even a reboot. It's like having Raimi and Webb release unrelated Spider-man movies on the same weekend.

Everyone is forgetting that Marvel had to say yes to this. Somebody actually got the rights from Marvel to produce "Turn Off The Dark". Money talks and Spider-man in this musical walks.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 2/22/2011, 9:19 PM
I was just thinking about that, Sweep. Marvel wouldn't allow this to happen unless they okayed it through a business deal. Where are the guys that get paid to say "Hey, this presents our property in a negative light"? The reboot is unpopular among a few people like myself, and if these musicals continues to be the outrageous farce that they are, people will start to think Spidey is done. It's bad business. Someone is being irresponsible.

Cool, but this was ALREADY DONE...in Seattle, and will be done again by the same troupe from Seattle in New York.

I guess Marvel took a punt on this musical nonsense. Maybe they thought they could expose one of their most successful characters to a broader audience and make a shed load of cash doing it. The mistake they made was handing over creative control to this "director".

Marvel will learn a lesson from this - just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Steve rogers is going to singand dance on the silver screen. All while making fun of Jack Kirby. No one seems to give a rat's ass about that.

Broadway and Spiderman are both a part of New York.
This to me seems a perfect fit. If the show is terrible
that's one thing, but people have been against this for a long time before anything was even known about the show.

I saw it this weekend at the Foxwood Theater in NYC.
Visually it is spectacular.
Music is one long U2 song with a lot of "Zoo TV" recycled elements.
Storyline is very bad.
The actors and stuntmen have a lot of guts as they are flying 20-30 feet in the air.
Play will do well as it has a buiot in audience of kids....and there were a lot of them.
