Avi Arad Reflects On Marvel Studios Departure And His Hope To Bring Sam Raimi Back To SPIDER-MAN

In a new interview, Avi Arad has talked more about why he decided to leave Marvel Studios and reveals that he's hoping to bring Sam Raimi back to the Spider-Man franchise for an animated adventure...

Avi Arad played what's been described as a significant role in the formation of Marvel Studios, but he left the studio under a cloud and has since remained part of Sony Pictures' efforts to bring Spider-Man and his supporting characters to the big screen (with plenty of mixed results).

During a recent interview, the producer was asked to elaborate on why he left and it definitely sounds like he butted heads with some of the names who are now synonymous with the MCU.

"I’ll tell you now, it was only my choice [to leave] because one day came when I said, ‘I think I’ve had enough of this,'" Arad said. "The company was growing with the CEO of this, and the CFO of that, but it was basically [a situation in which] we were doing everything but now there’s way too many people for me to deal with."

"And everybody wanted to make movies. Everyone. I mean, you name it, the people who were cleaning the place wanted to read the scripts,"
he continued.

"The time came when, for me, it was time to move on. There are a lot of theories behind it, but it really doesn’t matter. I tried correcting some of them and it always looked like an aggressive posture by someone who is begrudging." In 2014, Arad penned a scathing open letter in which he attempted to take credit for the entire MCU slate and accused Kevin Feige of taking his credit.

It's hard to imagine Arad being remotely happy that Feige is now in control of the live-action Spider-Man, but Into the Spider-Verse was obviously a huge hit and it seems as if he's enjoying working in that realm and developing all of those villain-led spinoffs. In fact, he's hoping to bring Sam Raimi back into the fold and has a message for the filmmaker.

"I would love to see what kind of animated Spider-Man movie we’d get from Sam Raimi so if he sees this, ‘Call me Sam!'" We know he butted heads with Arad over Spider-Man 3 so there's a very good chance that call will never actually be returned...

The guy who wanted Iron Man to have a toaster armour, dares to take credit for the MCU slate?

And now he wants Raimi to be back for an animated film, because he feels too guilty for shoving Venom in Spider-Man 3?

Or how about wanting to make an Aunt May film, which should be nothing more than an April Fool's joke?

This guy is sad, and I'm glad Spider-Man is off his reach, for now.

@OuzoPowerMan - wellll... Agent may was somewhat in into the spidey verse and no one complained or batted an eye.

She was like Alfred, may, and fox all in one.

OuzoPowerMan - 3/21/2019, 5:12 AM
@MyCoolYoung - Except she wasn't the protagonist of the movie, hence why nobody batted an eye.

@OuzoPowerMan - it's a change from the source material though. See the "Zendaya is MJ" reveal if you don't think it matters.

It's just called selective outrage

@MyCoolYoung - That's true. People complain all the time about changes Homecoming made but are totally okay with everything that Spider-Verse changes.

OuzoPowerMan - 3/21/2019, 6:38 AM
@MyCoolYoung - The movie played around with the theme of alternate realities. So most people wouldn't really see May being Peter's Alfred in that universe as a deviation from said source material.
Also, you're comparing two different things..? What I called out as stupid from Arad's side was wanting to make a movie about Aunt May, not having her as a spy-esque supporting character in a Spider-Man movie.

@OuzoPowerMan - If they wanted to make an adventure film starring Marisa Tomei I would be all over it, but it wouldn't have to be Aunt May to interest me.

@OuzoPowerMan - i will give Avi credit credit for the first two Raimi films... but also despise him for the third in forcing in Venom... and in giving him credit i mean he left Raimi alone to make an outstanding film. Spidey 2 is still an outstanding film and a CBM benchmark even according to Feige.

Listen im glad for him and he did an okay job at the time and i appreciate his part in helping formulate the MCU... but im glad he left because what we're getting now is amazing and he wouldn't have been able to hit those heights.

Imagine if now Sam is back to make Spider-Man 4. It will be as shocking as a legit announcement of Half-life 3 from Valve.

The guy who forced venom over raimi and drove two spidey franchises to the ground with sm 3 and asm 2 tried to take credit from feige for creating the mcu despite leaving marvel studios in 2006? Two years before the mcu started?

You dont say......

@Jeight8 -

To be fair. I believe it was in 2006,that Marvel Studios secured the
financing to start making their own films and that was only possible
because of the success of Marvel films such as the first 2 Spider-Man
and the first 3 X-Men films.

I include X-Men Last Stand and the first Fantastic Four film as Arad
successes because both films while receiving mixed reviews, were
box office hits at the time. I believe it was the success of FF that
was used as a selling point that any Marvel property could be adapted
when they made their pitch to make their own films.

@WarnerBrother - I just learned yesterday that The Last Stand made more at the domestic box office than Days of Future Past.

That hurts my heart like you wouldn't believe.

@WarnerBrother - arad and perlmutter played a role in bailing marvel out financially. Nondoubt about that.

The thing is that they shouldnt be involved creatively and they were too arrogant and greedy to realize that.

Thr old executive guard that was responsible for many cbms in thr 2000s needs to be dismantled. Arad, perlmutter, rothkan, tolmach, kinberg, goyer.

They all need to go.

@EskimoJ - wtf??! say it aint so...that makes ZERO sense...
JonC
JonC - 3/21/2019, 10:23 AM
@WarnerBrother - the deal Marvel Studios made for the loan was more based on the fact that they were going to give up ALL their characters in the agreement if they were not able to pay back the loan.
JonC
JonC - 3/21/2019, 10:24 AM
@EskimoJ - a lot of that has to do with budget... by comparison, Tim Burton's original Batman was hugely profitable because it cost so little to make.

So close yet so far from having a perfect spidey trilogy with Rami, still sucks to think about it

I don't think that Avi is being pretentious, he had a vision for Marvel that didn't match the current one at that time. In fact look at Marvel now, they even hide their plots from their actors and sometimes make them shoot multiple endings in order to keep the story a secret from them. I also read that they only give the actors their scenes and not the full script to keep everything discrete. Even their vloggers don't know anything, It sure seems like what Avi had in mind back then and what he tried to imply in his words up here.
