BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Earns Less Than Expected With Still Strong $92M

BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Earns Less Than Expected With Still Strong $92M

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did well this weekend with a $92 million haul, although that's quite a bit less than both Sony and analysts initially estimated. Unlike Captain America: The Winter Soldier, this sequel has NOT exceeded expectations! It is closing in on $400 million worldwide though...

Some interesting facts and figures above, but they show us that domestically, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been something of a disappointment for Sony. A debut of $95 million or more was expected, while $100 million also should have been a likely outcome had the sequel exceeded expectations as Captain America: The Winter Soldier did a few weeks ago. While this is still a solid debut (the movie is hardly a flop), the fact that it will ultimately fail to top the domestic total of Cap's latest big screen outing is not something anyone would have believed a few years ago! However, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 should rake it in overseas, but whether or not it will earn more than The Amazing Spider-Man worldwide remains to be seen...

Well considering its getting much the same reaction as 'Man Of Steel' and currently has a lower rating on Rotten Tomatoes than the first film it isn't surprising that it would have a slight drop.

Regardless, it will still make between $750-900k as every film in the series has made that amount. Though competition from Godzilla and X-Men Days Of Future Past could detract from this.

Personally I'd guess the 800k mark, but once again, quality doesn't matter with these films as Spider-man 3 is still the highest grossing of the series.

For clarification - I meant 'first film' as in first 'The Amazing Spider-man' film which currently holds a rating of 73% compared to 'The Amazing Spider-man 2' which only has 54% at the time of writing.

It was expected at this point, but Captain America: TWS just topped Man of Steel's gross (according to Box Office Mojo).

I think there's a real chance Cap could end the year as top-grossing CBM. If so, I'm a happy camper.

@Chcl
As much as I want to agree with you - the Spider-man films have each made in the region of $750-900k and TASM2 seems likely to make that much also. So sadly its likely that TASM2 despite arguably being the worse film will make more than Captain America 2 due to the large amount of Spider-man fans.

I've seen Cap 2 at the theaters four times, because it is just a really great film. This, I don't plan on seeing more than once,

Told you it all sucked weeks ago. :) Glad it's underperforming domestically, if not internationally...here's hoping it plummets during its second weekend before Godzilla and DOFP come along and completely decimate it.

So I watched Cap 2 last night. Great movie. Solid 4.5/5 and my favorite MCU movie. I do have a few nitpicks with it.

1. Zola said BW was born in 1984, so she's 30. She said she was in the KGB but they dissolved in 1991.

2. Falcon was an Air Force PJ, but for some reason the Air Force kept their flying suits at Ft. Meade?

3. Why didn't anyone think to shoot at Cap's legs instead of directly at his shield? Especially the dude with the mini gun.

4. Are there no cops in DC? There were 2 massive shoot outs in the streets during the middle of the day and only 1 cop showed up and he was immediately blown up by the Winter Soldier.

Like the first one, don't have any intention of seeing it in the theater. Don't get me wrong...I'm all for Superhero movies doing well...but I'm not going to contribute to a film that is sub-par...it pretty much got similar reviews the first film got, and I stayed away... catching the 1st one on dvd. It was ok, so I think I'll keep my cash in my pocket and wait for a better film to come out. Godzilla....I will be seeing in IMAX

Sure 700,000 is good but Sony wants a BILLION! They want 1 BILLION! They're not getting it either cause it's do clear they don't give a [frick] about quality. They care about money. Wake up call for them hopefully.
