EDITORIAL: Was “Cop Car” Good Enough To Land Jon Watts The Director’s Chair For Marvel/Sony’s “Spider-Man”?

This is the first Jon Watts directed movie that I’ve seen, and I’ll admit, the main reason that I watched it was out of curiosity because Jon Watts is directing Spider-Man’s stand alone movie debut in the MCU. Check out my thoughts and review after the jump….

As you would expect, Kevin Bacon gives an amazing performance as a crooked cop who is faced with an unimaginable scenario.  The overall premise and concept of the movie is cool, interesting, and even unique to a certain extent.  It’s entertaining.  It definitely drags in some parts and the ending felt a little rushed, but overall it was a good movie.

The plus side is that Watts has a really good understanding of adolescence.  The interactions between the two young characters are the highlight of the movie.  There’s a scene towards the beginning where the two kids are challenging each other to swear, and it’s both hilarious and real, it brings you back to the first time you said shit, pussy, and boobs, and they even improvise some words, like assface, and admit that f*** is the worst.  It was fun to reminisce, almost like the first time you drank a beer or had a shot of whisky, or talked shit with your friends.  It really explored that young hearted mindset that we've all lived through.

The movie really delves into innocence in general, and how when we’re younger we feel invincible and we don’t fully understand the consequences of our actions because we don’t have any real reason to care.

The movie also explores issues like trust and authority.  Shea Whigham, who plays Chief Roger Dooley on “Agent Carter” has a standout performance and almost tricks both the two main characters and the audience, reminding us how much our life experience either good or bad plays a major part in our daily decisions.  It also reminds us how youth is truly wasted on the young.

Overall, this movie got me really excited to see Watts work with Tom Holland and even more excited to see his take on Spider-Man and Peter Parker.  Watts understands youth and he knows how to film it, he could give us a really emotional and heartfelt film, and with talent like Holland, and Marisa Tomei, I have a lot of faith in his take on Spider-Man.  I feel like Marvel/Sony could give us the best Spider-Man movie yet and finally do justice to both Spider-Man and Peter Parker.

 Cop Car is a 2015 American road thriller film directed by Jon Watts and written by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford. The film stars Kevin BaconShea WhighamCamryn Manheim, James Freedson-Jackson, and Hays Wellford.  The film is available in select Theatres and on iTunes.

You have more faith than I do.

It's not about the director, it's moreover about the script. Webb was a great director but the scriptstainted the franchises true potential.

Though, I do have faith that some directors can make a decent script an even better movie (visually)

@TheOracularNerd

If it's more about the script, then this movie will indeed fail.

The director is fine, it's them writers I'm worried about. Good god Feige and co better have a good reason for why they hired those two.

Man, I believe Vacation wasn't received too well, but I'm not necessarily sure why? Was it the comedy that didn't work or what? It looked like a pretty decent film from the trailers though. I have yet to see it. I guess all writers have their one film that works best for them though. Who knows, Spider-Man is a pretty loose character when it comes to some of his antagonist with the exception of at least 5-8. So if they want to make this next flick more fun than being dramatic I think it could work. I would've hired the guys who did the writing for The Spectacular Spider-Man. Their art was very meh, but the stories truly kept you lured in.

I know there is concern considering the level of experience the writing team and the director may lack at this point. But this isn't Fox. We have two two studios with a lot invested in this deal, and one of these studios has a pretty good track record right now. They have taken their time with everything in regards to this film. I'm not one bit worried at worst we'll get Ant-Man. I'm not worried a bit. Good review by the way, maybe I'll try to catch it this week. Going with some friends to see Compton again tomorrow. Yup it's that good.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. True, Spider-Man 2 is still the best Spider-Man film to date, and Feige knows this too which is cool. I think Feige even said that Raimi's Spider-Man 2 is one of the greatest CBMs overall. I have faith though, and I really like Holland for the role, I think we could get something special. My only worry right now is the writers, but I trust Marvel, especially after all of the conflicts throughout Ant-Man, and they still came out on top and gave us a great movie.

@DrunkenNukem

I hear you, but I feel like this is a totally different situation than Webb and Sony. "500 Days Of Summer" and "Cop Car" are entirely different movies.

Not only is Marvel Studios completely different than Sony but Webb actually gave us a Spider-Man movie in the vein of "500 Days Of Summer", the potential of a movie in the vein of "Cop Car" and with that emotional weight and understanding of youth holds a lot more potential, imo

None of their movies have been received well with the exception of Horrible Bosses.

I would have hired either Wright or Goddard to write and direct the movie.

Totally, good points. TWS is a great example too. I'm actually really excited to see Spider-Man's rogues in the MCU, I hope we hear some casting news for Norman Osborn soon, I wonder who the main villain will be, if they pull of Mysterio that would be crazy, there's so much potential
