Emma Thompson Says If She Sees Another SPIDER-MAN Movie She's "Going To Hang Herself"

Steady on Emma! I mean nobody was thrilled with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but that might be going a bit far. The ever-awesome Emma Thompson (Harry Potter, Remains of The Day, Love Actually) has chimed in on the whole "superhero fatigue" discussion...

There's a notion among many people in the movie industry that it's only a matter of time before the sheer volume of superhero movies leads to the public becoming tired of them, and they all but go the way of the dodo - and while British actress Emma Thompson doesn't seem to share that opinion specifically, she definitely sounds like she's sick of the formula... and of a certain Wall Crawler in particular!

In a new interview with Vulture Thompson was asked how she feels about the superhero movie boom, and had the following to say.

“I loved the original Superman with Chris Reeve because there was a real tongue-in-cheek-ness to it, [but] after a while, you do get a tiny bit cynical about it. The fact that I know they’re going to win out in the end has now slightly interfered with my continuing to go to those movies. If I see yet another Spider-Man, I’m going to have to actually hang myself. I can’t do it anymore! They’re all marvelous, but how many times can you make this franchise, for crying out loud?"

We're obviously all big comic book movie fans here, but does she make a valid point? To be fair, Spidey is now under Marvel's control (for the most part) and they've promised we won't be seeing a retelling of his origin story in his 2017 solo outing - but just how different can/will they make a movie about a teenager with superpowers learning about responsibility while he fires webs from his wrists?

Let us know what you think, and be sure to check out the full interview at the link below.

Ha, good point... I still kinda agree with her though. I love these movies but the formula is driving me to boredom a lot of the time.

What is she talking about? CBMs aren't the only movies where we see the protagonist win. Perhaps she should hang herself now then.

I think it's funny how people say that they are getting sick of Spidey, yet never mention Batman who we've seen on the big screen more than anyone else.

“The reason is too great to be revealed in this movie (Civil War),” Ruffalo tells BadTaste.it. “I was in the script but then they removed my character. They don’t want to reveal where is he and why. I don’t even know if Hulk will be back soon.”

regarding the superheroes always win that's the same in most films although i do hope that infinity war part 1 ends with the heroes losing.

This is why I think Suicide Squad is going to be a game-changer for the superhero genre. No one in that movie is safe (well, almost no one). People won't know what to expect.

Sorry, but it's not always a give that the "hero wins out". Sure it's rare that the main character in a blockbuster will die, but there are other, more subtle ways of conveying a bit of ambiguity with their arcs and stories etc ... and the majority of superhero movies just don't bother attempting it. I love these movies but they need to shale things up a bit. I couldn't enjoy Ant-Man nearly enough as I wanted to because every single second of it was signposted.

There are PLENTY of other film genres where the hero always wins. Heroes fail in cbms...The Dark Knight for example. Don't blame Marvel blame Sony for shelling out shitty films that lead to an inevitable reboot to save a beloved character.

The heroes always win in the mission impossible films miss Thompson, is that hanging material??? How about the Bond films? Transformers...Yea as someone mentioned, you're going to be in beauty a d the beast next year. How many adaptations of that have been done??

Batman can get another reboot but Spidey can't????!

I have much respect for miss Thompson, great actress, but I find flaws in her commentary

Lmao, you guys are pathetic. Some British actress cracks a joke about how she'd kill herself over another Spider-Man movie, and you're sitting behind your keyboards acting like she just insulted your mother. Grow-up.

LOL... I think some people are trying there best to kill the genre like Fox Studios with FF. But these stars are trying to plant the idea in the heads of people. But the truth is quality of stories have gone down in most movies even indy films and the super hero movies have some exciting action from nostalgic characters so i don't see that dying out anytime soon. Besides I would watch a new spidey film over all her movies. Only movie I enjoyed with her was Stranger Than fiction.

And then Marvelites try to say DC fans bring DC to a Marvel threads, when it's the opposite.

I agree with @RorMachine in a lot of ways, and the trailers are a big problem with that but so is the storytelling. This isn't something that affects every Marvel movie, or every CBM, The MCU rocks.

It's actually one of the reasons that I'm excited for the DCEU, because not only am I curious about the characters and their arcs, but the stories and storytelling in general, and how everything will fit together.

Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad both look like they have amazing stories to tell. Again, can't wait for the MCU too, but I definitely see what Ror is saying. I think we could get something special with the Spider-Man reboot though.

My plan is to avoid the new trailers, maybe watch one, ha. I am positive that AOU would have been more enjoyable if I never saw a trailer

One major difference between Spider-Man and Batman is that people actually take Batman seriously.
