Is SPIDER-MAN Trash-Talking Or Being a General Douche In The New Car Thief Clip?

Yesterday we were greeted with three new clips from The Amazing Spider-Man, one of which was the "car thief clip". In this article I will talk about the mixed reactions this thief clip has received.

Recently, we were provided with three new clips regarding The Amazing Spider-Man. Since they have been released, one clip in particualr has gained mixed reactions from fans. This clip involves Spider-Man messing around with a car thief.

There have been many people that have said, this is too mean spirited. That Spider-Man went too far and this is not the character they recognise. However, there have been other fans, who are happy to finally see Spider-Man's sarcastic attitude appear. I am one of those people and during this article, I will go through why I think people are over-reacting.

My bet during this clip, is that, this is the first night Peter goes on patrol. What became apparent to myself, is, he was almost treating the thief as a target. Could this possibly mean this is the first time Spidey is properly testing out his web-slingers? I personally believe so. I also believe he hasn't learnt the true meaning of responsibility during this clip. Now, gathering from what I have seen from the trailer and read from various different sources, there is a possibility Peter becomes Spider-Man before Uncle Ben's death. If that is the case, then this clip makes perfect sense when put into that context. He is obviously out hunting down thugs but treating it as a joke. He has not learnt his lesson yet.

Now, what is also interesting about this clip, is, it almost appears he is doing exactly what Flash would do to him, if he had that power. He is clearly venting his frustration and is enjoying the power of being on the opposite end of the spectrum. I bet there are plenty of kids who have been bullied, that would love to extract their revenge on the instigators. This is clearly the case in my opinion, when it comes to this clip. We are witnessing Spider-Man before he becomes Spider-Man, before he realises the responsibility, that comes with having great power.

In essence, he is a kid before becoming a man. When I was a teenager, I had a real attitude, especially at the age of sixteen. Most of the time I would end up having a fight with someone and at one point my parents would not allow me to leave the house because they were worried, I would either end up seriously hurting someone or they would end up hurting me. After a year of this I realised how foolish I had been and completely grew out of that phase. I wasn't forced to stop but I decided to. My point is, Peter is most likely going through a similar phase. He realises he is stronger than everyone else and enjoys being powerful. What will force him to contemplate his attitude and decisions will be the death of his uncle. Again this is just a guess but what I think will happen in this film ,is, his Uncle Ben will give him the great responsibility speech and instead of going out on patrol, he won't bother because of what his uncle had told him. In the process he will let the thief go, who kills Uncle Ben.

I personally wouldn't mind if they changed the origin to this. It would feel far more grounded and relatable. I think at one point in our lives, we have all been responsible for disobeying our parents. This time though, for Peter, it is a grave mistake. His Uncle is killed and he learns the hard way, pushing him to become a man and accept his responsibilities. This I personally feel would be a great new route to take, whilst retaining the fundamentals of the Spider-Man origin story.

Now I am sure most of you will disagree with the majority of what I have said but that is why we are here my fellows, to talk about and speculate what new films will provide us. Now to ask all of you. How do you think they will tell the origin story in this film ?

Ummm...ok? But I still think that clip is terrible. In the sense that it feels unedited and it runs on too long.

@golden123. You would definitely be correct that it has not been fully edited yet. If you listen to the sound there is a siren in the background and then it abruptly stops. From what I am seeing though, it is giving me the impressions and ideas I expressed in this article.

Tone of voice counts for alot and in that clip (or at least that copy of it) it's hard to make out.He may sound alot more lighthearted in the finished product.Personally I have no problem with a fledgling Spidey showing off a bit.He may not have learned his 'great responsibility' lesson at this point....

@Ashes2Phoenix: It better not be fully edited. The editing was horrible. From 0:08-0:10 I was confused for the first three veiwings of who was saying what word.

Whether he's being a general douche or smartass, at least he's making fun of criminals and villians. I can only imagine the first thing he says to the Lizard.

"With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility"

I think he will learn the meaning of this throughout the movie?)

In Batman Begins, Bruce was an jerk when he was in his early twenties. He lipped off to Alfred about tearing down the mansion, he was a douche to Rachel in the car, and he was willing to shoot his parent's killer. Hen then threw a hissy fit when he couldn't. The point is, he hadn't yet grown into the person he would later be.
This is likely when Peter first gains his powers, and goes a little over-board with the newfound sense of control he has over his world.

@golden123. Lol, I don't think you should worry about the sound. The clip is sourced from a mobile phone. It is hardly going to have great sound. It's like watching TDKR prologue, filmed with a phone on Youtube. I could barely hear anything !

Excellent editorial, man. I agree with you. I enjoyed the clip and all, but it seemed like Spidey was a little less off the merciful guy I remembered him being. I'm pretty sure your theory is right though, it has to be tied in with the story. There has to be a senseful cause and effect somewhere. His initial reaction to his new-found powers is "awesome! now my life won't suck because i can show up anyone!" But, of course, that'll soon catch up to him.
More than anything, it's a coming of age movie. Can't wait!

Being a douche is part of trash talking. You don't exactly do it to encourage your enemies, anyway. Spider-Man beats his foes because he gets them to play by his rules, not the other way around. Screwing with their heads is just par for the course.

Ummmm, people tend to forget that Spider-Man in TASM is a TEENAGER. So of course he's gonna be a bit immature when he first gets his powers.

And plus, this looks like a deleted scene, so some of y'all need to relax. Seriously. Lol

So, people were "over-reacting" because they forgot to speculate an epic novel worth of assumptions about when this scene takes place, even though none of that has anything to do with content of the clip.

He's not funny, his delivery is shaky and telling the robber it's a webbing he developed himself is lame and seems like a deleted scene. Was that a joke? That's like Batman telling a villain how he made batarangs in a cave or Iron Man cracking a joke about shrinking the arch reactor into a smaller size to power his suit and keep him alive. That's not funny.

But back to the original title of the article before veering into unrelated territory, yeah; he seems like a douche. Is it because he hasn't learned great responsibility? Don't know, doesn't matter. Douche either way. And the knife part could have been funny if his delivery wasn't so stiff and he hammed it up more about being scared. It's like he wants to rush through everything he says. Makes it look like he can't act.

Good article. I never thought of it that way before. Personally I didn't actually have much of a problem with the scene. Still it's nice to see some possible explanation for his attitude in that scene.

Honestly I feel like those who think that Spider-Man was too "mean-spirited" are the ones who didn't want this reboot to be made. It just seems like that it's a case of looking for the smallest things to blow out of proportion because you don't like something.

This is the first I've seen it... it didn't really work for me, but perhaps with some editing it could. Plus, context matters. If the criminal was being a super-abusive dickhead just before this, then any amount of torment would seem more than justified.

But yeah... it's not funny, and is really kind of a mess in its current state.

@NeoBaggins. To be fair he is being sarcastic not funny. There is a very distinct difference between the two. I found his delivery fine. You have to understand that underneath the mask is a teenage nerd. If you look at the clip when he is Peter Parker, he comes off very shy and stumbles on some of the words, he is trying to desperately get out. I have a friend who is a nervous individual and he mumbles when he is put on the spot. Rushing with the dialogue gives off a great energy in my opinion. It comes off cocky and for this character I think it works perfectly.
In regards to the webbing he developed himself line, I feel this displays a kid who is very proud that he has managed to configure the web-shooters. He is showing off.
I am not going to argue with you because no matter what I say, it won't change your opinion, which, is fine. I don't bare any grudges that you don't feel the same way. All I would suggest is that you seem very aggressive about it. Calm down, if you don't like what you have seen, you don't have to watch it do you ?
Again I am not kicking off and I respect your opinions but it just appears to me that you feel you are being forced to watch it. Which, of course you are not, so either wait until the final product to judge the guys acting abilities or just don't bother watching it. Completely your choice, buddy.

... man, some of you will never just shut up and appreciate something. How miserable some people must be that they feel the need to pull apart and criticize every thing. In Raimi's flics, he didn't have enough wit or humor and now his humor is too douchey for some of you dickheads... but I'm sure you could all deliver an Oscar worthy Spidey flic if given the chance right?

Ashes2Phoenix, your comment to NeoBaggins has my full approval. It makes my brain hurt and my eyes bleed reading comments sometimes as I'm positive most people don't even think before posting. They take the subject straight for face value without ever trying to interpret the the situation. It's like a plague of stupidity.

Why don't people like this clip? This is just like what spidey does in the comics! Especially the early Ultimate comics.
