J.K. Simmons Comments On Spider-Man 3 Problems And Reason For Cancelled Fourth Movie!

While discussing The Daily Bugle improv scenes, the actor mentions the interference from the studio Sam Raimi was faced with and goes into detail about the cancellation of Spider-Man 4...

On His Acclaimed Improv Scenes As J.Jonah Jameson:

It was ridiculously fun, again because a significant portion of what you see on the screen, even though the script was there and was good, we just screwed around and came up with gags and ideas. Liz Banks, who’s now a big stinky movie star, and Ted Raimi, Sam’s brother, and that Tobey Maguire kid, everyone who was involved in all those office scenes, it was like a little improv comedy troupe with Sam pulling the strings.

On The Possible Problems With Spider-Man 3:

It was always fun, even in Spider-Man 3, when Sam was being micromanaged by the studio and it was kind of stressful, even that one was kind of fun.

On The Plans For Spider-Man 4 And Its Cancellation By Sony:

A year ago, we went to Sam’s birthday party and we were talking about “Here’s some ideas for what JJJ is going to have in Spider-Man 4, and it’s going to be great fun, and blah blah blah,” and then a month later, boom, the rug got pulled. There are a million different versions why it got pulled. I think a significant factor was that the studio said, “Look, we have a release date in mind, and we’re announcing, and therefore the tail has to wag the dog now, and you have to start this movie now.” And they didn’t have the cast signed up, and they didn’t have a script that Sam felt like was anywhere ready to shoot, and eventually everything just fell apart, and [the studio] said “Screw it. We’ll start from scratch with a new director and a new cast.” That was a bummer for a number of reasons.

With an all star cast that includes Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy, Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May, The Amazing Spider-Man is set to be released in 3D on July 3, 2012!

As far as Spiderman 4. Wasn't maguire trying to get like $50 million for the part? I'm sure that had nothing to do with rebooting/ recasting

If I'm reading this right, the studios are more concerned about quantity than quality. Sad.

"even in Spider-Man 3, when Sam was being micromanaged by the studio". I'm glad he mentioned that. Spider man 3 could have been great.

SM3 definately was micromanaged.
sam is on record saying he doesn't even LIKE venom, so why are sony forcing this character on the director?

if SM2 doesn't give a director carte blanche to make SM3 the way HE wants, then what does?
spiderneil
spiderneil - 3/15/2011, 7:05 AM
a new character (venom) was introduced into a script that that practically finished, causing huge rewrites and plot holes you could drive a truck through because the character that linked things was binned (vulture)

all of that was done not to tell a story but to replace an unpopular character (vulture) with venom not because the story demanded it but to make more money. because SM3 made an absolute fortune the producers equate that as success.

So if this one fails and they want to pump out another in a few years, do we get another cast, director, and origin?

Spiderman 3 should have ended in the Bell tower. Topher Grace was a shitty choice for Venom also lol.

i enjoyed Raimi's run for what it was but im just as excited about the new direction they're going in.

Writers, artists and story lines, (as well as costumes) change all the time in our comics, so i'm just rolling with the punches and enjoying the show (hopefully):)

JK was without a doubt the definitive JJJ

I like it that he says Raimi acknowledged the script was far from ready, cuz word out there is it was pretty bad. The upside of JK Simmons being out is he can call it like it was, what´s the worst they can do now, fire him?

Sounds like they had fun with the improv scenes. I liked Robbie, he was fun.
From the sounds of it, Sam Raimi stuck to his guns, said the script sucks and we aren't ready to shoot yet, so the studio went "um, ok, say, that Marc Webb guy isn't doing anything, let's make a reboot". Dumb-arse studio big wigs. They could have just done a script re-write.
Still, looking forward to the reboot. I just wish it could have come about under different circumstances.

Yawn. I'm glad the 4th was canceled. In case any of you forgot, "Vultress" was currently being written by Raimi. Raimi had no logic in his writing and directing. The closest he had was in part one. I'm glad they rebooted. Raimi had the same BORING-ASS formula. Bad guy with a heart! Bad guy dies at the end by his own hand! Parker cries like a b*tch! Parker narrating things we don't give a damn about. Tch, all FAIL.

Ya'll really need to stop blaming sony for ruining the Spider-man franchise. Everytime something goes wrong its the studio with you people. Have it ever occurred to some of you that maybe it was Raimi fault. Yes he did not want Venom in the movie but guess who pushed him to put Venom in? Marvel's own producer Avi Arad. He pushed Venom on Raimi because we the fans wanted to see him. Again not sonys fault but everyone on this site favorite studio Marvels fault. How did Vemon being in the movie make Sam put a dance number in the movie, or have Peter crying all the time. It was all Raimi. He was the one who wrote that Sandman killed Ben Parker... WTF. Then Peter let him go are you kidding me. What about Raimi always having Spidey show his face all the time especially when he was on the train. Come on do you serious believe those kids would not have put that on youtube, all Raimi. Raimi has a huge ego and with the success of every film he felt that he could do whatever he wanted and get away with it. He said he hated Venom and even though he knew the fans loved that character what does he do? make a joke out of him and not only that he kills the character again WTF. So be glad you have a studio like Sony to say enough is enough and went and got someone else. Unlike fox who Sam probably would have loved because they do not care about the quality of there films as long as they cashing in. Come on the Vultress another love triangle with spider-baby at the center of it all even Sony said WTF. I applaud you sony lol

spiderneil - 3/15/2011, 8:59 AM
@ dadarkknight

no venom = no symbiote = no personality change = no dancing/ finger pointing

no venom = vulture = link between sandman and vulture (know each other from prison) = no need for contrived plot to team up sandman and venom

no venom = no black costume = no need for peter to be motivated by anger to go after sandman = no need for sandman to kill uncle ben

pretty much all the problems with SM3;
plot
motivation
pacing
...is venom related

But at least Sam Raimi kept to true to the comics. sure, he left-out the Web Cartiage system, but he made "Peter Parker/Spider-Man feel like they could truly exsist in a wolrd like today. And I know we're going off topic here: But why the wolrd would the company wait until now, to film in New York?

Um hello, the Web-Head, does Live in New York, Queens, he is a Queens kid.

As for the Sandman, well his character in the movie, was different then in the comics. Becasue in the comics: William Barker, got his nickname: Flint from being the bad-guy in highschool and then the name: Marko, when he went to jail, where he later on, saw his father.

AS for the child, I don't remember a single comic book, where he had a child, but I suppose I can see they added that for sentemental value, but as for the fact, that Flint Marko, killed Uncle Ben? What seriously, that never happened. At least the comics got it right. Uncle Ben dies two-ways: Gun-shot by robber in the Amazing-Spider-Man and the other Spider-Man, and Death By Vulture, in "Spider-Man Noir.

Yes i did not studer, Vulture does eat, Uncle Ben's heart!

Glad they stopped when they did. SM3 had too much emo, to many plotlines and Topher Grace WAS a horrible choice to play Venom. He's not a bad actor but WTF? I don't mind a bit of deviation from source material for the sake of good film making but...damn.

I reserve judgement for Amazing Spiderman. It could go either way.

dadarkknight - 3/15/2011, 9:30 AM
@spiderneil

I recall a dance number in the second film. Why do all the villians have to be a good guy that happens to be bad.

People were ticked off because he was not motivated by anger he came off as an idiot emo kid.

Then lets be honest who wanted to see an old man flying around. Out of all the villians you pick for the movie who gets to side characters villians to play the lead villians. Let be honest Sandman and Vulture do not deserves to be the lead villains in a spider-man movie. They are better being in a group of villains. Vulture when he came out was nothing more than a jewel thief while sandman was just a common thug with super powers. Nether villain cared for taking over the world they just wanted to steal stuff lol

definately no dance numbers in SM2, the closest we got to that was 'raindrops' which imho worked beautifully

@Spiderneil: Lol, you, sir, are a neanderthal. BB had logic and tight fighting with actual plot twists. All Spidey movies were predictable plots with good fighting. Now tell me why you would think they are better than BB? Lol, your mind must have had trouble keeping up with the intellect of BB. So because you failed to understand the sheer brilliance of the plot, you gave up trying to strain your brain in comprehending it, thus dubbing it lower than the Spidey movies.

I understand. Intelligence ain't for everybody, lol.

The fight scene with Doc Ock on the train is far and away the BEST CBM fight scene to date. I won't be watching the new film. Rebooting after just nine years while all your leads are still in their prime is just plain retarded. I won't give Sony or Marvel one thin dime for this abomination. The character was just starting to mature and grow. Now they go back to high school, pimples, and teen angst to try to tap into the Twilight demographic. No thanks.

After this piece of crap bombs and they are forced to go back to the director and actors that actually produced money making Spider-Man films that are entertaining for all ages, then I'll come back.

As for gopher play venom, he played a great Eddie Brock JR. He wasn't the mainstream Eddie but he was the ultimate version (which I never got into) so if topher would have been cast in this movie (which i believe is based on the ultimate series) i think he would have been a good fit. so most likely the newReboot will follow the same thing as spidey 3 and not have the mainstream Eddie, but the Eddie Brock jr, execpt it won't be an alien symbiote but a suit eddies an peters dad made.

I dunno.... blaming only the studio for Spidey 3's shortcomings strikes me as being a bit too black/white about the whole thing. #3 was the first one where Raimi and his brother actually came up with the initial core story *and* nurtured/developed it into a whole screenplay. If they didn't like Venom, maybe they should have shared some of all that money with a writer that did?

The whole thing lacked focus, not just Venom, and it definitely needed a better editor to tighten the whole thing up.

Who knows how much more money the Raimis were demanding for "writing"/directing (and getting their siblings to work in) Spider-Man 4?

You can't compare the action scenes in the Batman movies to the Spiderman movies because of the nature of the story. Batman is more of a crime/detective movie, in which nobody has powers. Batman is all car chases and real-life like fight scenes. Spiderman is all superpunches and flying around. Raimi and Nolan both hit the nail on the head with what they were going for in the action scenes.

But Spiderman 3 was the worst piece of shit since the Star Wars prequels.
CanadaMan
CanadaMan - 3/15/2011, 12:03 PM
Does anybody realize that part of the reason Spider-man 3 had Venom forced into it in the first place was because of fans! That's where the blame lies, not the studio. The studio heard the comic book fans' outcries, and told Sam that Venom had to be in it! It's our own fault here people! That being said, the real question now is, would Spider-man 3 have been better off without the symbiote at all? I mean, they could have waited, and then introduced it at the end of Spider-man 3, or at the beginning of Spider-man 4!
