Rhys Ifans On Suiting Up As The Lizard In The Amazing Spider-Man

As we know The Lizard will be a CG creation in Marc Webb's TASM, but Rhys Ifans reveals to Cinemablend that he also wore a makeshift creature suit as he stood in for reptilian villain on set. He also reveals just how big The Lizard will be onscreen..

While speaking to Cinemablend about his turn in the new period drama series Anonymous , Rhys Ifans spoke about wearing a very different type of costume for his role as the villain in The Amazing Spider-Man. Apparently he not only wore the mo-cap suit so he could mimic The Lizard's movements, but also wore a cardboard head and claws at times..

The majority of the time I'm me, I'm a human, not a Lizard. That's hard enough. I did have the CGi suit for certain scenes. The Lizard is 9 feet tall. There was one day that I went on set and they had a double, a big big guy, playing me, as the Lizard. I looked at it and I went "No." Following that Marc [Webb, the director] let me know all the physicality, all the physicality you'll see in the Lizard is my own.

Ifans elaborates, revealing that we will be seeing a CG creature with emotions, all performed by the actor himself. Perhaps akin to Caesar in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes?

I had a green suit on, and then this cardboard head, and these big claws. It was the most [frick]ing insane… Each and every time you see the Lizard, the technology is so advanced now that when the Lizard's eyes move, they're my eyes. If I frown or show any emotion, they're my emotions. That's how spectacularly advanced technology is.

We have yet to see a (clear) image of The Lizard from the movie, nor any leaked footage from the recent SDCC screening. But it should only be a matter of time now as a new trailer should be right around the corner.

Rhys saying 9ft could just be the alcohol talking.
Why are you guys complaining about that anyway???
Bane needs to be bigger. The Lizard needs to be smaller.
I need to do a school report on the mind of forum complainers.
Looking forward to this movie. IMAX 3D baby!

Not my favorite Spidey villain by any means, but at least their going with one of the classics. I really want to see a good version of GG. That's Spideys' Joker for sure. I hope Lizzy doesn't look too much like Godzilla (the reboot) or a raptor from Jurassic Park.

9 ft is about the size of the hulk... and thats the size I can see the lizard being in this movie, to me 6 ft would be too short.

So Lizard standing face to face against Spiderman will look much like this since he will be 9 feet tall:

awesome, in spider-man 3 video game connor turn into giant lizard in boss level

I just hope they don't killed the him this time, he can be captured and thrown into super jail or something
one of things I don't like about last trilogy is they keep killing the villains

Lizard sounds cool I guess.... still don't like the suit for spidey AT ALL though. But I can't judge the movie itself yet.
Bearjew
Bearjew - 9/12/2011, 6:28 PM
Please don't kill him. I mean for one thing he has a son and a wife and for another he's really a good guy. I didn't like the same story every time in the last trilogy. Spider-Man 1- Mary Jane gets captured, Green Goblin dies. Spider-Man 2- Mary Jane gets captured, Doc Ock dies. Spider-Man 3- Mary Jane gets captured by Venom and Sandman, Venom dies.

I have not heard or seen ANYTHING from this production to make me want to see this. However, 9 foot Lizard sounds interesting. I'm close to rubbing my hands together like that big ass roach on Family Guy. Gooood.

"The majority of the time I'm me, I'm a human, not a Lizard."

Is he poking fun at himself or is he saying there isn't much Lizard in the film? I'm not fully grasping the context.

9ft could be an exaggeration, or just an inaccurate height assumption on his part. He's probably like 7 feet tall most likely. Either way, it's still cool haha. :)
