Spider-Man Broadway Musical Update

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the web-slinger's first crack at a Broadway musical, is really starting to come together under the direction of Julie Taymor (Broadway's The Lion King and the Beatles-inspired feature film, Across the Universe).

As has been previously reported, Evan Rachel Wood has been cast as Mary Jane Watson. Now Variety is reporting that Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler in X2) has been cast as Normon Osborne, who, as all spidey-fans know, is actually the Green Goblin.  In terms of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Variety notes, "The actor donning the tights of the wall-crawler himself remains unannounced; open auditions for
Alan Cumming
the role were held earlier this year. Wood's co-star in Across the Universe, Jim Sturgess, has also been mentioned as a possibility for the part."

Previews for Spider-Man will begin on February 25, 2010.

I still cannot believe they are making this. This all has to be some sick joke

Evan Rachel Wood will totally upstage Kirsten Dunst. I don't see what all the whining is about around this production. No one knows what it will be like yet. And yet so many are quick to condemn. . .

I soooo want ALAN CUMMING to do a NIGHT CRAWLER movie, or even better EXCALIBUR movie!

Clive Owen For Captain Britain! ; D

Oh GOD, I thought (hoped... PRAYED...) that this thing was DEAD! Is Stan Lee THAT desperate for money and attention that he'd whore out Spiderman for this? Why doesn't he just have Peter Parker out on the streets in pumps and a little rouge blowing sailors at $5 bucks a pop? When will the madness END?!!!!

LEEE777 - While I agree a Nightcrawler movie would be cool, Alan Cummings would never go for it. He's said in MULTIPLE interviews that he had a nightmare of a time with the makeup and vowed never to repeat it.

This show is going to be bizare but I love Alan Cumming and Even Rachel Wood will make a decent MJ.

But whatever, I saw the Lord of the Rings Musical so I have no right to judge anything...

If anyone can pull this off it is Julie. She is an amazing director.

Jim and Rachel will both be great.

I hate musicals, but I know if I could I'd go see it. Spidey makes everything better.

I had no idea Alan Cumming was a broadway actor as well. Wierd. But not as wierd as a Spiderman musical! XP I will however, go out of my way to see it next year. Just because I need to see how they pull it off. Special effects don't translate to stage very well.

Phoenix9109: Yeah, ALan Cumming I think started out in broadway... but he is good imo. But yeah, it is weird how they are coming out with this Spiderman musical! Like you, I am curious to know the outcome and see how they will pull it off. haha... I wouldnt have thought of it but hey even Shrek is on Broadway now, so I guess anything goes!! lol... =)

True, but Shrek makes much more sense as a musical than Spiderman. I mean, music played a sort of big role in the Shrek movies, but...the closest role music had in Spiderman was the fact that MJ tried her hand at broadway. And failed miserably.

Watch this thing get so big that they make a movie about the musical. It'll most likely suck and people will start to think Spider-man is your friendly neighborhood spider-fairy.

I seen those gag images with Spidey dancing weird. Honestly, Julie Taymore directed Lion King, Tempest, and Across the Universe. Which one had her cast dancing like that? Lion King had a very tribal dancing style most of the time based on it's setting. Across the universe barely had any dancing in it whatsoever! And that was set mostly in New York! so it's not like she hasn't got a grasp on New York's musical possibilities. The Tempest gets released this year.

Phoenix9109: "I mean, music played a sort of big role in the Shrek movies," yeah I know, its true the movie plays alot of music. But its Shrek! Its about ogres and donkey and freaky pinoccio!... lol...dont mind me... just not a big fan of shrek... haha..=)

I was really worried about this project when it was first announced. But it does have ALOT going for it:a talented director, tunes written by U2, and some seriously talented actors in key roles. I've never seen a Broadway play...this could be my first.

@teabag

Well done, my friend. Clearly you should be writing the music to this show with Bono and the Edge. Did you guys knw that they are writing the music to this? Isn't that pretty awesome?

I don't know how this is going to work out. All I know is that I'm getting tickets, front row, opening night. I'm psyched for this. The things they do nowadays on Broadway are incredible. And Alan Cumming as Gobby is perfect casting. I saw him a few years back as the Emcee in Cabaret, and he was absolutely amazing.

I think I'm gonna audition for this, just for kicks. If that douche from Across the Universe doesn't get Peter, it 's gonna be me. You'll see.
